  1. And don't forget, while the Bears have lost to every NFC South team this year, they've had a late lead against every one of them and New Orleans is the most flawed of those teams. Is there any reason why Brees won't torch Vasher/Tillman as he did the better GB corners?
  2. Driving through the middle of Kansas last night I managed to get The Score. And it just happened to be during Jesse Rogers' hockey show. He had Buff as his guest. They went through in detail what happened with his injury/trade discussions. Buff said he was actually hurt, though he was vague about it. Something in his "upper body" that was "painful" and made it so he couldn't do anything. He said he started to hear the trade rumors from friends and his girlfriend, who was apparently freaking out because they just bought a new house and are moving in right now. He said he would be out tomorrow night and probably practice Thursday with an eye toward playing Friday. I got the impression though that he wouldn't play until they get back home on the 3rd, especially with how well Eager is playing in his place on the third line. Might as well make sure he is fully rested. We have one of those super late 9:30 CST starts tomorrow night, but I'll be staying up since I don't have to do anything but cook on Thursday.
  3. Leaving the Dome yesterday I was more relieved than anything. If the Bears lost this game, the season was over. The Rams D is just gutless against the run though. This has been going on the last few seasons. Poor tackling, lack of effort. It was all embodied in that third-down run Forte had where he broke about five arm tackles to get the first down. It was a fun game to see in person, obviously. The Dome was overrun with Bears fans, and after the 1st quarter what Rams fans were there were very quiet. I love that the Rams had 4-5 false start penalties in their own house.
  4. Yeah, I'll probably freak. I'm already more excited for hockey in November than I've been for many, many years. Off to the Bears game right now though.
  5. What an amazing game. I love this team! Now the team gets to go home for a couple of days before continuing the trip. Aside from the win, the best part was getting to hear Hughson do the PBP. As much as I love Foley, I think I'd trade him for Hughson.
  6. Oops. Okay, yeah, they have Crawford in the AHL. I think he'd be a more than passable backup at this point.
  7. You mean d-men? In order of their quality of play: Keith Campbell Barker Seabrook Johnson Walker Sopel And then there's Wiz. Sopel needs to go in any deal. But it's a bigger problem than that. The cap being what it is, you simply cannot have that much money tied up in goalies. We knew this when they signed Huet and nothing has changed. One of them has to go. Simple as that.
  8. He's just one of those guys who is so talented he makes everyone around him better. So even if it's not him scoring, he's setting up his teammates. I still think he gets taken off the puck too easily sometimes by the bigger defensemen, but his skills are unbelievable.
  9. Wow I had never seen that... and when I played hockey in high school the fights that happened, there was no friendly conversation before hand. Nice to see an insiders look from the NHL perspective but it might ruin fighting a bit for some of the more casual fans :) There were never any actual fights in my high school games. I mean, you had pushing and shoving, but my only fights were in practice against my own teammates. I think the conference had a pretty strict rule about fighting. It carried a game misconduct and a multi-game suspension.
  10. In case folks haven't seen it yet, Burish is blogging for the Sun-Times. http://blogs.suntimes.com/blackhawks/ His discussion (with YouTube) about his opening-face off fight against Vancouver last year was really interesting. And the video shows Dvorsky standing there with the puck listening to the whole conversation, knowing they were about to throw down. I love hockey.
  11. I don't mean to get too far into the inside baseball here, but it seems like the Hawks beat guys are in the bag for the team. I know there's only a few of them and they aren't as tenacious as the baseball and football guys, but this is ridiculous. There's no injury. We all know there is no injury. But this line gets thrown in there. There was finally an article in the Trib today about the penalties leading to benchings, which should have been asked of Q after Tuesday's game and put into the game article. Kyle, any thoughts? Particularly, with how obedient beat guys need to be in light of their ongoing relationship and travel with the team? Well... to be fair, Eddie said it was an undisclosed injury as well. Also, Coach Q said it in his post-game press conference and that "we'll know more later". It's just song and dance, we all know what's going on. Right, and that's my point. Kuc just needs to add a short bit about the trade speculation. EDIT: And you know, about the possibility of trading Nic right now. I mean, I don't mean to be short-sighted and only look at what he's done lately, but he's playing great with a good team in front of him. So of like, oh I don't know, in Tampa. Just sayin'.
  12. To follow up on the trade talks, this paragraph is from Kuc's Tribune gamer this morning: I don't mean to get too far into the inside baseball here, but it seems like the Hawks beat guys are in the bag for the team. I know there's only a few of them and they aren't as tenacious as the baseball and football guys, but this is ridiculous. There's no injury. We all know there is no injury. But this line gets thrown in there. 13. Nylander is a talented guy. I think it's best to trade Buff while he still has some value left in him. And Sopel is useless. So I'm good with this deal. I don't know Nylander's contract situation, but I would imagine it will give the Hawks some flexibility down the line as well. As for last night, the second period had most of the scoring, but the third was a masterpiece. Beautiful flow, lock down defense, no boneheaded plays by the D. Kept it simple, getting the puck out and down and then forechecking well without getting out of position and if they did, the hustle was there on the backcheck. Just beautiful. Toronto hasn't played since Monday, a 3-2 loss at home against Boston. Toronto is 3-3-3 at home and of course the Hawks are 3-3-1 on the road. Gotta love the original six matchup, and for folks outside Chicago area with NHL Network, they will have the game.
  14. More great morning reading from the Tribune: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/hockey/blackhawks/chi-blackhawks-john-mcdonough-out-loud,0,6533291.story?page=2 But this part just makes me shake my head. No forward thinking by that freaking goof Pulford. McDonough said:
  15. Sounds good! Seriously though, I'd deal Harden to get Halladay. And Toronto might want him for marketing purposes, being Canadian and all.
  16. Toews, on his first fighting major: Awesome. He didn't even know if he'd get a major for that scrum. Toews isn't as big, but I want to see more Roenick in him. I don't mean fighting, because he correctly pointed out that the Hawks can't have him off the ice for five minutes at a time, but being physical would add another element to his game when he's not lighting the lamp. Kuc is also reported that Q might be dispensing with the goaltender rotation and going with Khabi. I think that will last until his next crappy game. Anyway, Khabi is starting tonight. I also read somewhere this morning that Dallas leads the league in goals scored at home and goals allowed at home. So I say 1-0 Hawks.
  17. Assuming Portis is okay, which I guess he is, I think you have to bench Bowe.
  18. But then teams are going to be conservative the last 5 minutes of the 3rd period, etc etc etc Right. There is no perfect solution. So the question is how to balance the integrity of the game with the interests of the fans. I think they have struck that balance now, though I agree with the suggestion that perhaps the shootout be extended to include five shooters like the AHL does. It's a great game and I'm glad to be excited about it again, even if it's not perfect. It's been awhile since I've looked forward to the next time the Hawks play. Tomorrow night, 7:30, btw. :)
  19. By the way, I don't know how familiar you are with St. Louis, but if you need any dinner/bar suggestions, things like that, just let me know. I can also help. I was stuck down there for about 18 months and still have to visit fairly often. Thanks for the offers guys. Our plan is fairly well set because we have a few friends from STL that we'll be meeting up with. Not planning on a fancy dinner or anything. We are going to do the standard tourist things on Saturday afternoon (Arch, Budweiser brewery). Probably go out to the landing on Friday because we won't get in until after midnight. Saturday night we'll probably go out to the neighborhood bars. Our friends live near the brewery, so probably somewhere near there. Any suggestions? Big Daddy's and Truemann's on Sidney are good neighborhood-type bars. They are really close to the brewery. If you want a nicer dinner, Frazer's on Pestalozzi (literally right across the highway from the brewery) is great and Venice Cafe (eclectic, more artsy type of bar) is right next to that. Gus's Pretzels is also nearby. Otherwise, there are literally dozens of bars in the Soulard neighborhood just north of the brewery. I'm sure your friends that live there know them.
  20. If shootouts are going to exists, I think that if you lose in OT you get zero points. If it gets to the SO than each team gets a point, like it's a tie and then the SO is for the extra point. This might give more incentive to try to win in OT (not saying teams stall to get to the SO, but I would assume it happens). No, I think it would do the opposite. If you got zero points for losing in OT, everyone would hang back and not take any chances because they would just try to get into the SO to make sure they got that point. That's actually why they set it up the way they did, to try to get teams to take chances and make the OT exciting. Same reason it's 4-on-4.
  21. Khabibulin is 13th in GAA (2.33) and 10th in SP (.924). I wouldn't say he is "standing on his head," but he's playing so much better than Huet (2.95 GAA and .900 SP).
  22. What does the AHL do? Nevermind, I looked it up. They do best of 5. I'd be fine with that.
  23. I was relieved when the Hawks made it to the SO. I was excited when they won it. There is still a win on the line in the SO. It's exciting.
  24. By the way, I don't know how familiar you are with St. Louis, but if you need any dinner/bar suggestions, things like that, just let me know.
  25. My wife asks to go to a game every year specifically so she can watch football where it's meant to be played. Mine basically refuses to go to football games. She HATES football. We go to a ton of baseball and hockey games, but it's something about football. I think it's because her dad totally ignored her on Sundays when she was a kid. He's the one I'm going to the game with on Sunday. :D
