  1. Don't count on Prior. Something is very wrong with him. He's done.
  2. The reality is, we have absolutely NO reliable starting pithing besides Big Z. We have such a long way to go when comparing us to the better teams (AL and NL). Before we start talking about the OBP in the lineup - should we play Murton?, platooning w/ Jones?, signing/not signing pierre?, getting a power bat for LF, etc... We have Marmol/Marshall/Guzman/Hill as rotation guys next year. While they may be healthy - they are still very young and learning at the mlb level before they can become reliably effective (consistent command), which may take a few years for each. Pitching, Pitching and more Pitching will make the difference. The rest will take care of itself (i know its easier said than done). I'm not even mentioning Prior. He's dead to me. Re: FA pitchers...its gonna be a blood bath for signing Zito, Schmidt, Mulder, etal. Knowing we haven't paid the highest in the past, I'm resigned to the fact non of the top FA pitchers will be signed by the Cubs. 2007 will be another long year. I hate being so negative but I also hate pretending like we're a,player or 2 away from winning the WS.
  3. No. Don't pick him up. Hope that the cards re-sign him and then let him break down on their dime. He's about due for another injury. The lack of sauce may catching up w/ him.
  4. We need to kill tradiiton IMO. A. New Statdium B. Get rid of guests 7th inning stretch crap C. Put a stop to throwing the ball back after hr. /rant Moderator warning to poster: The use of vulgarity is against posting guidelines. Amen with the first 2. Throwing the ball back isn't that annoying. By saying get a "new stadium" - are you saying replace it at its curent location? Or put the new stadium is someplace like...Schaumburg, Joliet, etc... My belief is that the stadium draws fans for being "just the stadium" (history, etc...). But the Cubs also draw due to the environment around the stadium (bars). Believe me, I love to drink beer and have fun - but a message needs to be sent to mgmt. by the fans saying we are not putting up w/ the crap on the field. Point being, if the stadium is placed in a suburb - they will draw based on how competitive the product is on the field. Its not sometihing that anyone else has stated before, just thought I'd rehash it.
  5. For my own sanity, I refuse to consider scenarios for 07 that include Dusty. Amen.
  6. Exactly. The current formula is not working. Jim has to adjust the pieces to make it work. I want to see some type of plan for next year. Seeing Neifi play makes me puke, he's not going to be around - so why is he here? (Jim)
  7. There's such a demand for pitching that whoever we get, will be overpaid and mediocre. Oh...to be a veteran starter... We'll rely on our youth again for 2 of the 5 and 2 of the 6, not only are they cheap but players who should be known by the org.
  8. Is Freddie Bynum considered an IFer? Whats the deal w/ him and the Cubs plan? If Bynum is an OFer - he has no power. We traded a decent arm in Koronka, so I would think they plan on keeping him - but what value does he bring? Anyone? Seems like we have yet again - too many of the same type of player - speed, low OBP, IFer's (cedeno, izturis, perez, theriot?, bynum). I didn't mention murton and pierre on purpose.
  9. Ratings are down pretty badly from previous seasons. Advertising revenue is going to tighten up if they don't have enough people watching the games. And yes, that could have a noticeable effect on the team's budget. On a slightly related tangent, aren't we third or fourth in NL payroll? I know the Astros and Mutts are towards the top, but I'd have to imagine the Dodgers are somewhere in there. I want to believe that the Chubs brass is thinking about losing revenue etc.., b/c its the only way to get their attention to address the problem on the field. But you never know what the **** they're thinking.
  10. Decreased attendance? Puh-leez. Thats the last thing the Cubs are worried about. The lemmings will continue to pack'em in (Iowa blue hairs, fraternity parties, local yuppies).
  11. It might be the only shower these cards fans have gotten this week (plus, its better than the hose down they got in jail last week).
  12. And the whole "best fans in baseball" silliness is not something that every Cardinal fan touts like it's a fact. Granted, some idiots do, but certainly you can't lump the morons in with intelligent fans. Every team has intelligent fans, every team has idiots. Such is life. Why then is there constant graphics on the scoreboards and whatnot that read "Best Fans In Baseball - Sporting News"? That and the whole "Baseball Heaven" thing bothers me too... really the new Busch is just a new park just like any other. The Best Fans in Baseball = Cardinal Fans routine is nauseating. Maybe the fact that Joe Buck and LaRussa are figure-heads of these fans bother me as well.
  13. Take them out of the Maddux interest. I would bet the Dodgers are done making deals. They got the guy they wanted in Betemit. Being 7 games out of WC contention isn't a far reach at this point in the season, but leapfrogging 6 teams is tough to do.
  14. Maddux's best value right now is mentoring Marshall, Marmol, and Hill. Amen.
  15. Only the Cubs have not lived up to expectations. I've never heard that before.
  16. Marmol and Hill should be out there every fifth. There's something there, they need to be exposed to situations (ie. Marmol vs. Pujols) in which they can learn from. No doubt, Hill has to step it up. I hope he's a sponge (not literally, of course) around Maddux while they are both on the team.
  17. Hendry will make a similar trade like John Koronka for Freddie Bynum. Whats up with Freddie? What value did Hendry see in him that it took a three way deal to get him while giving up a top tier prospect who now is perfoming ok in Texas? I know Freddies been hurt, but where did Hendry think he was going to play? Oh, thats right - we needed a second basemen. These are the types of deals that leave me confused (I know, I know - amongst a number of other moves).
  18. Jim Hendry = Kofi Annan Despite the need to take action, watching on the sidelines seems to be satisfactory.
  19. Walker isn't going anywhere before the 7/31 deadline. Neither is Nevin. One of the 2 will be picked up off the wire before 8/31, and we'll be stuck with one of the two. Besides, if we picked up some prospects - what makes you think we could develop them for the "show"? If Dusty's still here, he'll manage to ruin every top prospect one way or another.
  20. Mike Caruso
  21. I used to go to about 40 a year for about 7 straight years, that ended 2 years ago when I moved out of the neighborhood - but still in the city. I consider myself a die hard. To satisfy my baseball fix, I've been to alot of Sox games since then b/c tix were easy to get and didn't have to overpay (including last year). I went to the game on Sunday and sat in the bleachers. I never realized what a dump wrigley is. The sound system sucks and while the place was packed, there was no energy. Throwing garbage on the field was another interesting move. The place is overrated. It should be razed.
  22. I love the idea of going young. Cubs brass need to learn that fans could care less how much payroll is...we just want to win. I have absolutely NO confidence in Baker, Hendry and especially MacPhail in their vision (or lack thereof) in developing younger talent. Before we start acquiring a bunch of prospects there needs to be a drastic organizational change. I'm open to trading all but: DLee, Big Z and Prior. We've all been through the ringer w/ Prior and I really question his heart/balls, but IF he is healthy - he (25) and Big Z are young and are good buidling blocks for the future.
  23. Pierre will be back and probably at more than you or I could ever imagine (3/24). While I don't like his arm, he brings alot of intangibles to the plate (hard worker, aggressive base stealer, ok OBP, lead off)...becoming a leader in the clubhouse for the younger guys. He'll test the FA market and come back to the Chubbs. I'm not happy w/ it but I have not heard of an alternative that could bring more - Dave Roberts? Don't think so, he's a rental until Pie is ready, if he ever makes it.
