  1. It's not that I agree. But attention has to be drawn to this. Well played. Guzman has the potential (still) to be lights-out awesome. Even when he was struggling this year in the majors, his stuff was filthy, and he occasionally looked absolutely dominant. Unfortunately, it was usually only for a couple pitches at a time. Given that he's basically coming off 2 years worth of injury, I'm willing to forgive that inconsistency for the moment. Let's hope he stays healthy and straightens things out this season in the minors - and maybe get a spot in the rotation part way through the year. I agree that Guzman is cooked, he hasn't even been prepared. His fastball is straight as an arrow w/ no movement. IIRC the games I watched him pitch - the majority of his fastballs were being fouled off, then eventually basehits. Basically, every hitter was seeing the ball and finally catching up to it. Pitch count = high in the early innings which lead to short outing. He has no command of his curve. I'd trade him in a heartbeat. Overated.
  2. Gagne was an animal during the no testing years and then blew out an elbow. Similar to comments about Mota being caught - he looked great when he's on the stuff but looks horrible when he's off. I'll take a pass on Gagne, citing inflated numbers.

    Mark Prior

Yes, Carl Crawford could get better and it's not hard to think that. I never said he has reached his ceiling yet. But as long as we're using age as a factor here, Cabrera is just 23 so he could, and probably will, get even better than he is right now. The discussion wasn't about which player was more available and which could be obtained for less. It was about which player is better right now and who will be better in the future. Cabrera is far better than Crawford is now and it's likely to stay that way. I believe the discussion is actually about Mark Prior - see post. Start a new thread.
  4. Fear not! Here is a link to the Benny Hill version. :D Come to think of it, whenever I hear that I think of Dusty making out a lineup card. That was great - thanks for the link (and great memories of watching B Hill when I was a kid)!
  5. Gives another new meaning to the term "limping into the playoffs"
  6. The Young Guns: Hill has obviously proven to be a starter in 07. I'm not sold on Guzman or Marshall yet. Guzman has no movement on the fastball, seems like every hitter is making contact with too many of his pitches (fouls and hits). Is there any way this can change? Marshall - he'd be the one to trade, IMO. IMO Mateo and Marmol need to pitch in AAA and fine tune command. The FA: is there a stat out there that lists ground outs vs. fly outs? If so, how do the FA's mentioned (Zito, Padilla, Schmidt, etal) compare? I want the FA pitcher who has the better ground outs vs. fly outs.
  7. Huh? Defensively. Strong up the middle defense. Offensively? We have another story. In other words, an area where we need help. Considering the Cubs have such a successful track record of developing position players to the major league Cub level, I'd rather pick up a FA IFer like we've always done. We've seen alot of these guys come up and no one stuck - not even Augie. I don't think that's sound justification to judge the guys we have in AAA now as failures-to-be and not give them a chance over guys like Neifi, Mabry, Lenny Harris, et al. That could also be due partially to how we have handled guys like Theriot and Fontenot in the past. We give the Bobby Hills and Hee Seop Chois all of the chances in the world, but we've never been good about giving chances to guys who ceilings are that of solid role players and not all-stars. I totally agree with giving the AAA's the opportunity, but we've gone so long without producing an everyday IFer from within the system. Management regimes have changed over the years but to no avail. Honestly, who is the last everyday IFer our system produced? Mark Grace (I can't think of anyone else, unless its the obvious I can't recall)? Thats a long time.

Considering the Cubs have such a successful track record of developing position players to the major league Cub level, I'd rather pick up a FA IFer like we've always done. We've seen alot of these guys come up and no one stuck - not even Augie. Is this a joke? I don't think anyone ever expected much out of Augie. Absolutely, yes. Knowing the lack of success from call ups, I thought I'd harken back to days of Augie.
  9. Remember back in the day (15 years ago?) when the box score for NL teams would list the paid attendance and in parantheses the actual turnstile. I think the NL stopped doing it for games like today. From what I recall, the AL always showed paid but not turnstile.
  10. Amen. It can't be said enough.
  11. Like other posters offended at the "Fat Jim" Hendry moniker, I would appreciate if we didn't refer to Mr. Miles as "Bruce the Christ". Thank you.

  14. I will promise to never refer to Jim Hendry as "#$@ Jim". Point taken.
  15. Fontenot is now 26. Is it do or die next year? If he hasn't risen yet, will he ever? It seems like we're at the point where we have so many of young infield players (The Riot, Bynum, Ronny C, Scott Moore, E Patt) - an area where we don't need help (Aram, DLee, Izturis). While I'm not at all familiar w/ Fontenot, and if he's not up here yet, what value does he add? I'd love if we can develop an outfield thumper. Or do they develop when they're here? Who was the last to come up in the system?
  16. Bruce - thanks for articulating alot of the points that so many of us cub fans feel need to be addressed in bullet point format. Short and sweet. We can only hope big Andy, Jim and the Trib understand these comments. We can only hope.
  17. Yes, they've given fat Jim the resources...but at a cost to the baseball operations. There's no accountability at the Trib, their focus is the shareholders. They pressure McGwire/MacPhail to market everything Cub related (bricks, concerts, all things wrigley, corporate events, roof tops, budweiser, bleachers, etc...), its overindulgent and makes me sick. I'm glad no one is going to the games, its about time. Its the only way to get the trib's attention. Unfortunately, like another poster stated - it always happens too late in the season when the money's already made. The reason why Cub fans are laughed at b/c they like going to "Wrigley Field", what happens on the field is window dressing. If you want to the team win, it may take the trib selling (which they won't do) or blowing up the dump known as wrigely (which won't happen either).
  18. How has he been doing this year? Is his time running out?
  19. While I don't think this is as big a deal as it sounds...it just points to the many "things" that happen day to day w/in the Cubs org. The Trib has totally marketed every facet of the Cubs, in every way possible. There are too many distractions for all players (rookies looking to get better, veterans in their routines), which turns to lack of focus on winning. Trib - sell the Cubs. Blow up Wrigley.
  20. keep feeding the machine, guys. Keep your season tickets, you'll make the ownership happy.
  21. Three main reasons why the Cubs suck? Wrigley Field. Ownership. Loyal Fans. Blow it up. Idiots continue to keep going to games. I'm sick of seeing "bricks for sale" ads on tv. Are you kidding me? Does this sound like a team focused on winning or an organization focused on the bottom line? I want a team that is focused on winning everytime they cross the white lines. There's too much marketing of the organization, beginning with WF and ending with 7th inning stretch guest conductors (and there's alot in between). Give me the Twins with young hungry players who know how to play baseball coming from a stong minor league system (Andy - remember this?). The Twins have crappy ballpark and at the time of his signing, a relatively unknown manager who commands respect. Show me a capacity crowd at WF and I'll show a bunch of idiots (season ticket holders included).
  22. I don't see him w/ us next year, if anyone. At best, he's DH'ing somewhere. At best.
  23. That's a pretty good comparison. If you object to going after him b/c he has been one of the main parias (sp?) on the rival team for a bunch of years, then there isn't much to say. Its a dumb reason not to want him. If you don't want him b/c you think his production is likely to continue to decline, that's a different matter. The Cubs are not the Bulls. I believe the Bulls picked up Rodman after already winning 3 WC's. Getting a guy in the winter of his career from a rival only spells doom = we depend on him being healthy (which he won't - see history) and if he is healthy, he's not a fit w/ the Cubs. Its not happening.
  24. He's making $5.65M I believe, but is arbitration eligible. Is this correct? If so - how does an arbitor determine salary for someone who's been hurt/bad year? Does the salary decrease? I had heard that the players union negotiated for arb eligible players that salaries can either remain the same or increase, but not decrease. At this point, what is he set to make next year?
  25. Don't speak ill of Prior. You're on notice.[/Colbert] He's bringing nothing to the table. All while he claims he's healthy and everything is ok. We can't count on him for the rest of the year, so why should we for next? They should shut him down for the rest of this year, so he's ready for next. Otherwise, we're playing games with actually thinking we can count on him.
