  1. You get to play GM in the offseason, and manager in '07. Who would you realistically get in the offseason, and then fill out your line-up card and bench for '07. Here's a chance for everybody to play with the budget, see who you can get, and go after your ideal team next year, do what you'd really want to do. . In my version I unload the contracts of Pierre Dempster and Rusch and go hard after Schmidt and Soriano with all the money that has been free'd up. . Aqusitions. . Schmidt - SP Wood - Closer Miller - SP Soriano - 2B Trade/let go Rusch Pierre Dempster Novoa Rotation Zambrano Schmidt Miller Hill Prior Line-up Soriano - 2B Murton - LF D Lee - 1B Ramirez - 3B Jones - RF Barret - C Pie - CF Izturis - SS P Long Relief Guzman Ryu Bullpen Howry Eyre Ohman Aardsma FA RP Closer Wood Bench Cedeno Soto <-he's the catcher right? Moore FA OF
  2. I don't think you realize how bad our pitching staff is. WE have the second worse pitching staff in the NL right now. We need to upgrade that. One new starter won't solve our problems. We can't count on Prior/Marshall/Guzman/Wood/etc to fill out those last two spots. We need to sign two pitchers. If we go after a big bat we won't have the money to do so. I don't think you read my whole messege. Wade Miller would be another signing. . If I had my choice we'd sign Shmidt and Miller and have a rotation of. . Zambrano Schmidt Hill Miller Prior/Mateo/Guzman/Marshall And I think we WOULD have the money to sign Schmidt and Miller if we could dump Pierre's salary and just used Pie instead and went after Soriano with the money saved on Pierre. Then you use all the money saved off of Wood/Perez/Maddux/ect. money saved to afford you your pitching solidifying moves. .
  3. Was anybody advocating not going after top pitching? I think we need pitching AND offense. One thing I beleive, that we absolutely HAVE to land a top starter via FA or trade. Then guys like Hill, Miller, Prior, Mateo ect. . can fill in the bottom couple spots in the rotation.
  4. Vance' situations are agreeable. I don't know how you could argue with that. Either you have Andrew in CF and Theroit at 2B -or- Soriano at 2B and Pie in CF. You can go cost effective with one of either Pie or Theroit if you can get that huge contract player. The reason you play Theroit at 2B is so you can afford someone like Andrew. Vice versa for calling up Pie to play Soriano at 2B.
  5. "Cubs Offensive" There, fixed it for ya.
  6. We should try to convince Miller to stay in Chicago. Then we have Zambrano, Hill, and Miller to build around. Hendry will need to either sign or trade for 1 very good pitcher. But I agree we need to go for offense too. In other words we need atleast 1 very good pitcher and 1 very good offense machine.
  7. And Miller looks good. Not all of a sudden though. More steadily. .
  8. Not to throw another wrench in this retiring thing, but can Derrek financially afford to retire at this point? Especially with huge medical bills soon piling up? How long can someone not play before they start losing the skills that got them there? I don't know how someone CAN'T afford to retire when they've made (I'm guessing here) around a net of $30 million. I mean even if you bought alot of expensive things (I doubt derreck was reckless with his money) you'd still HAVE those things. Like huge houses, and fancy cars, that you could sell for money. Even with huge hospital bills. 1 million dollars in the bank, just in interest makes you about $50,000 a year. Imagine that all you people with regular jobs. If you were a baseball player just for a few years and saved up 5 million dollars. You'd make $250,000 a year just on interest without even having to work.
  9. The Chop has left the building. .
  10. I've always wanted to say this. Can I borrow your time machine? Are you implying that Maddux is still a consistent pitcher? He has a 4.22 ERA this year, and is the type of pitcher that can keep you in the game, would be great around all of our rookies, and I beleive he still has the stuff to be a good #5. But as I said I would not offer him a whole lot.
  11. If we could trade for Andrew Jones in CF I would have no problem letting Theroit and Cedeno fight it out for 2B. If it meant we save even more money for a really good starter. I know you guys like your stats. But some atheletes are late bloomers you know. . I play BBall with my friends and uncles. And I could never keep up. Even in my 20's. I'm 29 now and my friends and family tell me how much better I am now when they play me. Theroit wouldn't be the first player to have below average ML #'s to figure it out, and post good ML #'s. As stated his OBP is very good. And that's something we need more of on this team. .
  12. Elaborate, or don't post at all. Do I really need to elaborate? I do know that I don't need to be told if or when to post. You want elaboration? Maddux will be an overpaid average to below average starting pitcher. He's a nostalgia act. It would be a terrible move to bring him back when you can get the same or better production out of a league minimum rookie. Which of our rookies would give us what maddux would? Which one has a proven history of going over 200 innings? None. I'm not advocating giving him a ludicrous contract. At Maddux' age he might understand he should expect less. I'd offer him a low contract and see if he bites. If not, no big deal. Who cares if he can go over 200 innings? It's worthless unless you can consistently put your team in a position to win, which Maddux can no longer do! Between Marmol, Guzman and Mateo (not even factoring in guys still in the minors like Gallagher, Veal, etc) you can get 200 IP from your 5th starter, but what matters is the production. If you just want a guy who will save the bullpen and "eat innings", then we should sign the unremarkable and mediocre Steve Trachsel. I've always wanted to say this. Can I borrow your time machine?
  13. Not playing Murton. Stupid. Very very Stupid. He's probably around the 3rd best offensive player on this team right now (with Lee out). . Make that 2nd, since Barret is out too. .
  14. "How to break a bat on your leg" - Carlos Zambrano "Good first impressions" - Juan Pierre "Walking, the basics" - Dusty Baker "Winning over payroll" - Andy MacPhail (FAIL) "Spending money wisely" - Jim Hendry
  15. Let's get back to Rich Hill though. That is what this thread is about, after all. .
  16. Yes I do...Does he still work as fast as he used to? I went to a game where he pitched a complete game (2-1 win vs. the Cards...McGriff hit 2 solo shots) in 1 hr 47mins. Side note...that was the series in which DK passed the next day. Donkey Kong, passed away?
  17. 1. Any stat is worthless on a Monday.  2. Yes I remember Lieber with the Cubs. :D 3. In two weeks, I'll really start to miss Fred's stats. Thanks for an outstanding job. You do know that there really isn't a Fred, right? It's just the name Tim gave his computer. You can't fool me. I saw fred's picture at a cubs game! Fred is real. FRED is REAL.

  19. Hey, I'm not the only one salivating for the off-season. Let's make up some more mock trades and signings!! This is fun!! WoHOOOO!! I'm not being sarcastic.
  20. How about this question...who would win between Dusty, and a computer whose running a program written by Dusty.... I see that game coming down as a 37 inning draw, both try to outsmart each other, both use all 25 men on the roster to pitch, and subsequently run out of players when the computer's Prior runs into Dusty's Lee on the basepaths, rendering both sides without enough players to continue the game. Well they both sure would use statistics instead of "who's hot" because Dusty has proven to think like a computer sometimes too.
  21. Seconded, I saw the clip of his news conference, it was heart breaking to say the least. Best Wishes Jada, Derrek and Family... Lets keep it up Cub fans. DLee and his family need us. Lets keep this thread going as long as it takes, that way we all keep in mind all of the important things in life. I have 3 daughters myself. I couldn"t even image. We are all praying for you Jada, DLee and family. Once a day I try to take a minute to pray, and send a little positive energy their way. That's all I ask you guys try to do aswell.
  22. Jones is an acceptable RF as long as we can get some better players for 2b and CF.
  23. tell me what date, what innings. And I'll check it on mlb.tv.
