That's not his only role as a bench player. What, are you going to evaluate Hoff's numbers last year and then this year based only his PH appearances? what are you talking about? i merely stated that it will be nice, hopefully, to have a LH power threat that can come off the bench late in the game in pinch hit situations. do you disagree with that statement? No. What I'm saying is that Hoff's value won't hinge on PH performance as you're seemingly trying to do with Ward in 2007.

    Well, if you actually look actually look at his numbers, he was pretty consistent throughout his career. which is the problem, as most power hitters don't stay "consistent" into their late 30's. He didn't really drop off power-wise until his 40's His numbers didn't significantly increase late in his career like Sammy, McGwire, Bonds, etc. I think hitting 40 homers late in your career when you have done it previously is a little different than hitting 60+ homers late in your career when you pretty much averaged 40 home runs most of your career. Having your career year power-wise at 37 is a little odd. Having another season at 39 that potentially could have been just as "career-y" if it wasn't shorter by 19 games is also odd. Hank has some weird fluctuations in the final decade of his career. Could just be one of those things.

    Remarkable power surge for Mr. Aaron in his twilight years. Guess since the rock solid evidence of "his head looks bigger" and "man, he got huge" aren't present, that's not questionable at all.

    It's all based on subjective comparisons to begin with. And "the integrity of the game" has been shaken plenty of times before. "Miracuously," the game has survived, as it's clearly doing by how it's thriving right now. Do you really want to sit around and whine about what happened in the past? For how long? For what purpose?

    That was just one example of many. The greatest legitimate home run hitter of all time, Hank Aaron, never hit 50 home runs in a season but Brady Anderson did. I guess you're right, the steroid era didn't skew the stats at all. I realize it's tough to admit that the baseball you have watched most of your life has been tainted by steroids but it is what it is. And Hank Aaron took greenies, so was he really legit? Jaywalking and armed robbery are both violations of the law. Are they both equally bad? Evidently greenies don't help you hit home runs or maybe Hank Aaron would have had as many 50 home runs seasons as the great Brady Anderson. Brady Anderson had one amazing year in a career of mediocrity. Boo-hoo. and McGwire "saved baseball" by hitting 70 home runs while juiced up to look like the Incredible Hulk which caused a jealous Barry Bonds to illegally bulk up. Not to be outdone by other "heroes" of the game like ARod, Pudge, Juan Gone, Tejada, Palmeiro, Clemens, etc., etc. And...? What was lost? What was damaged?

    Theriot needs to bat 8th. why? Because hes not that good? among regulars he led the team in both average and obp last year. if that's "not that good" then what are the rest of the players? better convincing argument. theriot is good in his own ways, and obviously has deficiencies as well. but to say that the guy who got on base more than every other player on the team last year "isn't that good" is just stupid. Ok, who do you think Theriot is a better hitter than for the 2009 season? Fukudome. The Theriot hate could be the most obnoxious thing on this board. How is it "obnoxious" if it's based on legitimate criticisms like his complete lack of power, his subpar defensive skills and his bad baserunning? These are all things that are extension of his play in the minors, so what are the odds he's suddenly going to shake any one of them from this point on? The guy has his use on the team, but the Cubs have several players who are either obviously or argubaly much more productive in the 1-2 spots than Theriot.

I gotta text Justin-Tyler (also sometimes referred to as J-Tie when I'm feeling oh so hip-hop) Soto got all of it! CHRIST, Carlos, WTF was that?!!!!!" What?     So why continue to subject yourself to "this place?" Pretty much all you've done since joining is pick fights, insult other posters and complan about how stupid everyone is and how awful this board is. Do yourself a favor. exhibit b. actually i haven't done any of that. at all. that's pretty offensive for you to say when it's completely untrue. i like this board. it's educational and a good place to talk baseball. but posts like the one i replied to bring it down so much, and unfortunately posts like that aren't exactly uncommon here. Just keep the blinders on as you barrel on through another rant in yet another thread.
