There was an annoying kid on the old cubs.com forum that worshipped Alou like he was Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays all rolled into one, I think some long-timers might have negative feelings toward Alou that stem from those memories. That might have been me. I was all about the Alou signing, and he never really seemed to recover his rep with most Cubs fans after his first year with them was relatively disappointing. He kicked ass the 2nd and 3rd season, but that first season combined with Bartman and the whole pee-hands thing did him in.

This dude had the whole world in front of him at age 22. I thought he was going to be a superstar; he was so money in the 2016 playoffs. Now he looks like my a$$ haha. This is maybe my favorite post ever here.

Sounds like something intentionally leaked from the Phillies to try and drive the price down (or at least, stop it from spiraling upward). i don't see how a report that they are feeling bad about their chances and that they prob won't spend the money elsewhere (on keuchel or kimbrel) does much to drive the price down Ah, so NOW you finally have come to accept that it was always obvious nonsense to think the Cubs' FO was trying to do the same.

I think it’s okay to let occam’s razor guide us to “they made a dumb move” and not come up with a complicated timeline that somehow absolves them. I think it was both they damn well knew what the money situation was going to be, and that generally they kinda suck at pitchers and panicked.
