  1. That seems to be a pretty extreme conclusion to come do. Why do you think that more money is going to always allow an average GM to overcome their mistakes and misconceptions as opposed to just amplifying or increasing them?
  2. But their seasons aren't very similar at all.
  3. If they're going to trade what few valuable young players they have it might as well be for Prince instead of Dunn. They'd be getting a much better return.
  4. heyward has hit .207/.307/.279/.586 since june 1st, that's pretty damn bad. that being said, it seems a lot of his downfall has been because of a thumb injury, which can really sap hitters of their power. Right, which is why, again, this has very similarity to Colvin's "swoon." This is a rookie playing injured.
  5. Good point. I suppose/hope Lilly being gone next year and if Silva continues being Silva they'd almost have to start him instead.
  6. That's not the same "swoon" at all. Colvin's numbers for the year are bolstered way too much by something that's all but unsustainable for him whereas Heyward is demonstrating the type of tendencies that are very promising in a young hitter like him and bode well for his future.
  7. The bullpen really isn't all that "lousy" at all, and rarely should it be any kind of a priority when a team needs this much work since it's relatively easy to construct a serviceable bullpen. The bullpen is not going to make or break the Cubs next year, and it's just going to be another year of extreme wear and tear on the arm. It's pretty incredible that they've gotten this much productive use out of him thus far, so they should definitely be listening to what other teams are offering for him, if they are inquiring. Teams in the hunt are always looking to overpay for bullpen help, and someone like Marmol would net an even better return.
  8. this may be true, but people have been saying that his arm is going to explode soon for three years now, and during that time he's been one of the most valuable relief pitchers in the game. Which is fantastic, but why gamble on him being one of the very rare exceptions that doesn't fall off of a cliff? It's much smarter and better for the Cubs in the long run to sell high on him.
  9. You think Heyward has it locked up? Strasburg and Garcia have to be in consideration. Heyward or Strasburg are just too far ahead for Castro to have a chance unless he goes on a REALLY insane tear the rest of the year. Heyward isn't that far ahead of Castro if at all. Of course he is. Remember, the decisions for these things typically comes to down to being little more than a popularity contest. It's ultimately less an issue of whether Castro had a better year than Heyward as to whether or not Castro's year was a bigger story and Castro is a bigger name than Heyward when it comes time to vote.
  10. aside from jaime garcia, the rookies who have played well have been mostly blue chip prospects this year. none of this chris coughlin, j.a. happ [expletive]. as for castro, he makes too many errors still, but that's to be expected from a guy who's 20 years old. there's certainly a lot to be excited about with him... the rest of the team, not so much. Turned on Cashner and Soto already? Cold.

  12. No.
  13. Yeah, a lot of Cubs fans overvalue Marmol WAY too much. He's a ton of fun to watch, but it's just a matter of time until his arm explodes. It would be one thing if there was even a chance of him starting, OK, then he'd probably be worth holding onto, but as it stands the Cubs should be listening to offers for him, too.
  14. Not to justify Hendry's time here, but some of the "bad deals" he's dished out here aren't necessarily the result of him being uniquely bad. Fukudome was a highly touted player that multiple teams were in hot pursuit of, and he reportedly actually took a bit less money than some of the other deals offered to play for the Cubs. Zambrano at the time of his last deal was definitely in demand and could have easily gotten the deal he got or even more if he had been a FA and arguably took a hometown discount to stay with the club. Look, I'd love to see Hnedry fired, but I guess this comes back to how I think he's ultimately not an exceptionally bad GM. I think he's actually a very average GM, and odds are he'd be replaced by someone whose teams would pan out with similar results when all is said and done. This is in no way an endorsement of keeping Hendry, but I would be very surprised if the Cubs ended up with a genuinely good GM as opposed to the usual reactionary retreads that tend to occupy that spot on most teams.
  15. I don't believe that's close to true. I bet you could get Dunn for 3/45 or 4/50. Yeah, Dunn's not going to get a giant contract. Howard's contract is absurd, but he has name recognition and a (vastly overrated) reputation that Dunn doesn't. Homegrown slugging hero on a WS champion plays a big part in that contract. Exactly.

  17. I'm sorry, but where are these scores of billionaires running around who have previous experience running a major sports franchise? Guys like Reinsdorff and Cuban are the exceptions. An owner's job is to put the right sports personnel in place because they lack the knowledge to do so themselves. Crane Kenney and Jim Hendry have proved they are not those people yet they still retain full confidence of the owners. I agree that Hendry should be gone sooner than later, but I'm still trying to figure out what the point was in bringing up that the Ricketts don't have previous experience owning a sports franchise. Most owners don't before they buy their team. I'm also not sure why being a fan would automatically mean that there would be bad decisions like retaining Hendry and co.. What fan out there is also a big fan of Hendry?

  19. I have no idea why it requires fielding the [expletive] MLB team possible to do the bold parts. Without answering for Outshined, my guess would be we'd have to trade away some of our better minor leaguers to compete next year. Because the free agency class is weak and we conceivably won't have alot of money to work with either. OK, but why does the team have to be blown up to do the bold parts? It's not like they have a slew of prospects beating down the door who need MLB time. I'm obviously not saying they need to cling to all of their veterans, but why "blow the team up" when the FA class is so bad? It's not like they'd be able to net much in return. Trade the players there's actually a demand for, but don't trade them just to trade them.
  20. I have no idea why it requires fielding the shittiest MLB team possible to do the bold parts.
  21. What would worry the most about Aramis opting out is if Hendry really is still in charge into next season.
  22. Vitters is not looming; he's still several years away. It wouldn't be a bad thing at all if he opted out, but I'm starting to not mind if he didn't. There simply isn't much of a FA market between now and next season.
  23. A replacement 1B for one. But who is out there? They have money freed up with Lee and Lilly gone and there's still no word that the Ricketts won't shell out extra if need be. It's not like there are any monster FA's out there that they need to have a ton of money for. I'm not saying I want them to extend Aramis beyond his crazy deal, but I wouldn't mind it at all if he goes [expletive] crazy good with the bat the rest of the year and he doesn't opt out.
  24. Now I already kinda don't want Aramis to opt out. I mean, seriously, who do they need to free the money up for?
  25. Most of the crap Soriano's gotten has been either forward-looking (he'll be paid $18 mil at 38 type stuff) or critical of his awful year last year. None of the Dempster bashing has been warranted at all. He's been really good since taking over as a starter for the Cubs. I feel like Dempster bashing has plummeted since he became a starter again. Yeah, it's really not around, though there's like 2-3 infrequent posters here who appear out of nowhere to rail on him for it, and it never fails to be hilarious.
