  1. Soriano is hardly a long-term solution. He's already 30, and he's having a career year in his contract year, which seems vaguely familiar from some Beltre guy in Seattle... Sheffield IS a stopgap, but so what? He's probably going to be a lot cheaper than Soriano next year and has a decent chance at being similiarly productive. I'd say 1 year contract, move Jones to center, let Pie develop another year in the minors, and move Jones back to right in 08 when Pie is ready. If Sheffield doesn't want a 1-year contract then you don't sign him.
  2. We can change his name to Alexander Rodgers. He'll be perfectly safe in a Cubs uni.
  3. Hey Len, thanks for making 2006 somewhat enjoyable. It was an impossible task, but you, with Bob, did a great job. Anyways, would you ever be interested in taking your baseball career beyond announcing if given the oppurtunity? Or would be like me and want to avoid the pressure that goes with being associated with a baseball team. Also, who's going to win the World Series this year? Thanks!
  4. Sac bunts have limited use. Most of their use should come with guys like Neifi Perez or pitchers, and it should even be limited with the Neifi's of the world to close and late situations when you only need one run to tie or go ahead. Outside of that, it's one of the most overused plays in the game. Take our big man, Derrek Lee. Last year he hit 99 XBH. Assuming you have a speedy guy like Juan Pierre on first (and judging by the current crop of managers and GMs, that's likely), Lee is just as likely to hit an XBH as he is a single. Pretty much any extra base hit is going to score a run with Juan Pierre on any base. Pretty much any extra base hit has a good chance of scoring a run no matter the runner or his position on the basepaths. There are, of course, exceptions to that rule, but most of the time it works. So, I'm assuming we have a Juan Pierre-type leadoff hitter next year, in that he's fast (not assuming on-base skills, that's yet to be determined). Wouldn't you rather have the oppurtunity for Derrek Lee's XBHs to drive in 2 runs instead of 1?
  5. those were all prospects on the verge of being major league ready. Probably the best prospect (at least in my opinion) in Hermida was mediocre for the most part and they were still fine.
  6. This should be the best series out of the first four. Maybe Mets and Dodgers...but the NL sucks. I want the Twins, but I predicted for the A's to win. I'm conflicted!
  7. Hopefully they would be smart enough to determine that a 7 game series doesn't make one team definitively better than another team. Which would lead to the determination that maybe all the mystique with the playoffs being where the best and clutchiest shine through is all nonsense. It's all a conspiracy to discredit Derek Jeter
  8. Hopefully they would be smart enough to determine that a 7 game series doesn't make one team definitively better than another team.
  9. That's why I took Avery with my last pick. He should rack up the PIMs if he stays on a team the whole year. I'm sure guys like Witt and Hordichuk will be available to pick up PIMs if you have someone spare to drop.
  10. I'm not high on Towers, personally. I'd rather Depodesta. They're both big upgrades, though. WOW, defintely not me. Towers is such a better GM. Deposdesta is so overrated it isn't funny. I don't know you can give a guy one year to install a plan that should take 3 years and say he was terrible. True but the fact that he seemed to have no coherent plan ever in that year amkes it an easy evaulation. Being in LA and seeing some of the non national news (the everyday stuff) has led me to this belief. He switched plans more often then anyone and his relations with the fans/media are worse then Hendry You could tell most of the media here hated him. Yeah, I know the media hates him (look at Plashke), but he was doing an okay job. The big market killed him (like illiniguy mentioned). That team, with some minor tinkering, was going to win this year.
  11. I'm not high on Towers, personally. I'd rather Depodesta. They're both big upgrades, though.
  12. The problem is that they already do. Maybe McDonugh (or however you spell it) will be the one to lean on Hendry to make better moves? i doubt it too, just throwing it out there.
  13. Well, despite missing the first few rounds, i'm satisfied with my draft.
  14. Well if the mandate is to win...let's sign CLee, Zito, and Soriano. Stick Jones in center, Lee in right, Murton in left, Soriano at second. Winner!
  15. Actually, I realize now that I picked Mets over A's in the preseason. I think this is the first time that both my preseason pennant winners have made the playoffs. I picked the Cards and Yankees I think. But the Cards aren't going to do anything in the playoffs, so I switched to the Dodgers bandwagon as far as making the world series goes.
  16. How so? Cause now the Cubs might consider Theriot as the starting 2B. That's risky, since Theriot doesn't even have one major league season under his belt and he's putting up numbers in the majors that he's never put up int he minors. But if Theriot sucked, the Cubs might go out and spend for a major FA like Soriano. There are no question marks with Soriano. I'm not saying that Theriot won't be a good 2B next season, I'm just saying it's risky. Actually its not as risky as you might think. For three years running, Theriot has put up an OBP in the mid-.360s in the minors. He hit .273 in '04, and .304 in each of the last two seasons. No one here or in the Cubs front office is expecting him to reproduce his numbers since joining the Cubs. You don't have to worry about that. But expecting him to have an OBP above .350, to hit around .300 and to steal about 40 bases in a full season is a fairly safe bet, not a risky one. Sure, he could produce below those numbers next season. But he hasn't for several years now and he is in his prime. One thing that can be described as risky is Soriano's defense at the 2B position. I think most any team that signs him will want him to play in the OF. I doubt that. His greatest value is as an extremely good offensive second basemen. He'll get more money that way too, and there will be teams that want him at 2nd and will offer more than teams that want him in LF since that position is easier to fill.
  17. I want Yankees/Dodgers because that would make me look smart. Ideally, it will be Twins/Dodgers though.
  18. Fast-forward to Monday, October 2nd Jim Hendry announces that he will spend the next few weeks "evaluating" the team. Fast-forward to two weeks later "Oh, well, we're always evaluating."
  19. Ravech: Alright then, now that we're 0 for 2, we need a hit. Who was the winner in the Scott Kazmir -> Victor Zambrano trade between Tampa Bay and the New York Mets Morgan: The 1976 Reds Baker: The Mets, because it's like they're fishermen and they reeled a Devil Ray
  20. They could have hotstove talk with Joe Morgan and Dusty Baker: Karl Ravech: Where do you two think Jason Schmidt is going to end up next year? Joe Morgan: I guess we'll have to wait and see where he goes, then I'll make a decision. Dusty Baker: Well, the way I see it, it's like the Giants are fishing and they're trying to reel him in but they can't quite do it and their line broke and they're all "DAG NAB IT" and he's wriggling free but he has a hook in his mouth now so he wants revenge so I predict he goes somewheres to the NL West.
  21. Z!'s last start of the year and the last Cubs game I'll watch this season. It has been a near-completely forgetable season, glad it's over.
  22. Sunday at 1:45 is the draft time. if that's too early, I would have to move it back a day. If it's late, I could move it up some.
  23. Any hope the Mets had is gone, and they had next to no hope to begin with. AL WS winner again.
