  1. Bonifacio .500. Last year Castillo led all qualifiers with a .347 BABIP. The Cubs as a team were dead last in BABIP in 2013
  2. School me: What exactly is BABIP? batting average on balls in play In case that's not specific enough, BA outside of strikeouts and homers. The average BABIP is usually around .300 depending on the season (last year it was exactly .300). BABIP figures significantly higher or lower than that usually mean someone has been very unlucky or lucky, though player speed, line drive percentage and other stuff is also a factor.
  3. I'm sure the stats will indicate that Edwin's just unlucky again like always.
  4. Carpenter's BABIP for his career is well clear of .350. What the eff
  5. Damn that wasn't even inside. Just a straight-up blast.
  6. Nobody on nsbb ever wanted to rebuild Also you can rebuild without tanking for 3 years There might be some financial reasons involved but it appears that at least the Astros and Cubs believe tanking is the best way to rebuild in this era of the new CBA. The new CBA promotes tanking as a viable option, even in drafts when there are no Bryce Harpers. Yeah, as much as I hate tanking and kind of residually hate Theo for doing it, the fact is the CBA changes post-2011 all but told teams that if they don't think they can make the playoffs they should be tanking. Which is a [expletive] joke, but as long as it's the system, then tanking's the way to go.
  7. 92-hopping their way to victory again, huh? Well, at least we already banked a win in this series
  8. Renteria's bunts are infuriating, but if Castro keeps hitting I'll survive
  9. Or, you know, try to win games because this team hasn't been too bad so far and it's only April 11th. Well, that's what I'd like to do, I'm just speculating what the FO is shooting for, and I'm assuming the idea behind getting someone else's closer on a team that on paper isn't ready to contend was to run him out there a half-season and hope he's good and you can flip him for more prospects.
  10. On a team like ours, the only purpose of having a closer at all is to build trade value anyway, so I'd expect them to stick with Veras until/unless he goes full Marmol.
  11. If they make a change, probably Strop
  12. If Villanueva beats Wainwright we should be awarded 2 more games in the standings for degree of difficulty or something.
  13. In the long run our manager being a moron probably won't be an issue, because if he's still a moron at the end of 2015 (when we're presumably going to try again) he'll just get fired.
  14. I mean, a lefty was up. He could have rolled one over to the second baseman and accomplished the same thing, and at least then there's a prayer of it scooting through. This is insane.
  15. That's simply not true. Most of them it's because they don't have a quality 3rd pitch to be a starter. He's being a smart-ass. If finding relievers is so damn hard then why do the same few organizations always seem to have good ones? And if our guys are so smart, how come our bullpen's been a crater of awful for 3 years? Are you really that dense, or just drunk tonight? The Yankees had a good one for so long because of Rivera. The Cards have a good one because they have an entire farm system so chock full of arms they can afford to use their top prospect as a setup man and it is still a good idea. The Cubs finally are in a spot where they have a bunch of major league ready semi-young arms in the minors, but 10 days into the season is far to early to torpedo the entire pen and start over. Well, they're not going to torpedo the pen and bring up minor leaguers because they're not trying to win this year, but that's a different thing. And I understand we don't have the depth to have 6 or 7 great young arms down there, but there's a wide gulf between that and this [expletive] mess, and I can't believe we haven't found it. Not every team with a decent bullpen is stocked with terrific minor league arms.
  16. Of course it's going to be [expletive] Yadier

  18. ERA 3.02, FIP 3.62, xFIP 3.95. xFIP has been 3.80 or higher the last 4 seasons. #BoyGenius Wow, and I thought it was bad enough that you felt you needed to break out the "no quality FA relievers signed excluding the ones that were because I don't think they should count" comment. Gregg's FIP and xFIP were even higher than Veras' last year
  19. ERA 3.02, FIP 3.62, xFIP 3.95. xFIP has been 3.80 or higher the last 4 seasons (and every other year of his career) #BoyGenius
