    For whatever it's worth, the A's only once were more than 11 games under .500 in the 2007-2011 span, so unlike the current Cubs, they weren't embarrassing themselves in between playoff appearances or racking up awesome draft picks.

    Bonifacio .500. Last year Castillo led all qualifiers with a .347 BABIP. The Cubs as a team were dead last in BABIP in 2013

    School me: What exactly is BABIP? batting average on balls in play In case that's not specific enough, BA outside of strikeouts and homers. The average BABIP is usually around .300 depending on the season (last year it was exactly .300). BABIP figures significantly higher or lower than that usually mean someone has been very unlucky or lucky, though player speed, line drive percentage and other stuff is also a factor.

    Nobody on nsbb ever wanted to rebuild Also you can rebuild without tanking for 3 years There might be some financial reasons involved but it appears that at least the Astros and Cubs believe tanking is the best way to rebuild in this era of the new CBA. The new CBA promotes tanking as a viable option, even in drafts when there are no Bryce Harpers. Yeah, as much as I hate tanking and kind of residually hate Theo for doing it, the fact is the CBA changes post-2011 all but told teams that if they don't think they can make the playoffs they should be tanking. Which is a [expletive] joke, but as long as it's the system, then tanking's the way to go.

    Or, you know, try to win games because this team hasn't been too bad so far and it's only April 11th. Well, that's what I'd like to do, I'm just speculating what the FO is shooting for, and I'm assuming the idea behind getting someone else's closer on a team that on paper isn't ready to contend was to run him out there a half-season and hope he's good and you can flip him for more prospects.

    On a team like ours, the only purpose of having a closer at all is to build trade value anyway, so I'd expect them to stick with Veras until/unless he goes full Marmol.

    In the long run our manager being a moron probably won't be an issue, because if he's still a moron at the end of 2015 (when we're presumably going to try again) he'll just get fired.
