  1. I want to be in first place at 5-8-1 really bad. Go Bears.
  2. If we hadn't done that, we wouldn't have Kris Bryant.
  3. Sounds like more tampering. Beane probably initiated those discussions as part of a master plan to get Russell back in a tampering suit
  4. Without going back through the minor league threads, I think he was posting K-rates in the 22-25% range even during his awesome stretches.
  5. Don't forget basically all of northern and central Indiana outside of The Region, as well as pretty much all of Iowa IIRC.
  6. Yes. Blackout doesn't mean you can't watch on cable, it means it's the only place you can watch (no MLBTV, no Extra Innings). You can go to this site and there's a text box to type in your zip code, and it tells you every team you won't be able to watch on MLBTV or EI.
  7. The Phillies certainly wouldn't be last if they were counting contributions from guys in that span. Utley alone has twice the WAR they gave the Phillies. Good point. Their numbers must be off then, or they're counting Castro, or something like that.
  8. Are they talking about guys drafted between 2004 and 2014, or contributions from guys who were drafted that occurred between 2004 and 2014? Because that could change things significantly.
  9. Yeah, we've all been spoiled. The Phillies and Giants, to name two, are teams I'm about certain have local network deals for at least some games, and those probably don't reach everyone in their blackout zones either.
  10. I hate that Julio isn't practicing right now, but I still should start Matt Ryan vs Pit over Ryan Tannehill @ NE, right?
  11. And I'm saying that would have been the case even if the Cubs stayed on WGN because WGN America isn't going to broadcast sports anymore (unless I'm wrong about that - just going off memory). That was the word, yes. I thought the Cubs represented the last of that, but apparently the Bulls' Saturday games are still on WGN America for this season.
  12. He's great, but he is only around for 1 year, and with Atlanta apparently in rebuild mode they don't get much out of keeping him.
  13. MLB.TV is under $150 for the season. That's not a small amount of money, but it's 6 months of all the baseball you want (really 7, if you're into spring training). If you're out of market, it's a great value. ETA: Just realized you might have been referring to the possibility of non-broadcast games, in which case oops. Although that does seem extremely unlikely.
  14. If I'm the Cubs, I'm not giving up Russell or Bryant (obviously) for Upton. If the Braves demanded Baez and wouldn't take less, I'd have a tough decision to make. A Rizzo/Soler/Upton heart of the order, with Castro, Montero and Bryant... =P~
  15. Recent high profile targets: FA: Furcal: No Bradley: Yes Pujols: No Fielder: No Sanchez: No (though talk didn't really heat up until the report that we'd signed him) Trade: Roberts: No Harden: Yes Peavy: No Granderson: No Garza: Yes And of course, Epstein: Yes The one that came to mind for me was Juan Pierre, though that was a little older.
  16. Guys, this is [expletive] exciting. After five years of [expletive] teams, we're relevant again.
  17. Cutcliffe literally had a heart attack from coaching Ole Miss. At his age it's no surprise he would turn down Michigan. He's perfect for Duke. Low expectations = low pressure. Weis was going to hire Cutcliffe as his OC at ND before that happened. Although little would probably have changed, it would've been interesting to see an alternate universe where that worked out.
  18. Theo just said they aren't shopping Castillo, for what that's worth. Called Montero a perfect complement to him.
  19. Frankly, until last week, I'm not sure how much of a downgrade Derek Anderson would've been. Cam was having a horrible season. Panthers play Tampa this week, maybe they can get by without him. They did once.
  20. Totally an agree to disagree type thing. I don't mind your arguments, I just feel different. Also CFB would still be a sport where one game can change the season, its just different teams that one game can change everything for. Well, not really. With 8 everyone has a mulligan. With 4 you probably have a mulligan, but you'd better play a really good team out of conference (Oregon), dramatically improve following the loss (Oregon and Ohio St) or play in a great conference where you can rack up quality wins (Alabama).
  21. I said winning the conference guarantees nothing, not that it means nothing. The rest is pretty much an 'agree to disagree' type situation. I like having one sport where one week/game/whatever can change the whole season, which the rest of the sports simply don't have (same with getting the best team, and I still haven't figured out why 'everyone else is doing it' is being used as a reason to expand). Like I've said before, I'm in the minority and they're going to go to 8 and I'm just going to have to deal with it.
  22. The same people that call ND greedy for being independent love to get all snarky about their beloved conference championship games, the most shameless money grab in all of college sports. Take off the ND blinders for a second and understand how absurd it is for Kelly to offer up conference championship games in order to get the 8 team playoff. I've never heard of this, but it's not like he's negotiating. He's probably making a suggestion. And frankly, they SHOULD get rid of conference title games if they expand the playoff to eight teams. If adding NFL games to the season is sacrilegious, then why isn't adding more games to the seasons of underpaid college kids?

  24. It's not like anyone forced the MAC/Sun Belt teams to play FBS football (and I'm an alum of one of them). They do it for whatever other reasons they have. Why is the onus on the rest of CFB to make it easier for them to win a championship? 4 is better than 2. Thought that before they went to 4, and it's exceeded my expectations. But beyond 4, the chance you've missed the best team is essentially zero (TCU this year is probably as close as you can get to a team with a claim to it). I love the fact that winning the conference doesn't guarantee anything. Why should it? I love the fact that fans of TCU/Baylor/Ohio St were watching and rooting hard for upsets last week to boost their chances. There's essentially 0 reason for any of them to care about other games last week if we're at 8, because they're all win-and-in games. The one thing the BCS did right (uninentionally I imagine, but still) was it made CFB a national sport because fans of the top teams in one league now had a real reason to care about games in the other leagues. I don't want to toss that out so we can get Boise State into the playoff.
