  1. Chris Myers (the dude sideline reporter last night, if you're unfamiliar with the name). They announced it at Cubs Convention.
  2. I'm glad I have a non-swoosh jersey (bought a Santo 10 years ago and will probably never buy another). That said, those are otherwise ok. I approve of getting rid of the number on the front of the road grays. Makes it cleaner. The smaller front patches on the other 2 will probably take about 3 minutes of getting used to.
  3. Would be a great time for Ricketts to employ that 'If Theo comes to me with an idea that would improve the team, I generally approve it' logic that he claims to have. If ever there was a move that would help the Cubs be competitive post-2021, which is what they claim to want, this is it.
  4. I really don't like the idea of trading Bryant, but getting Arenado, given that he's already locked up long term, would likely be more than 100 cents on the dollar. If that's an option it should be done like yesterday.
  5. Couldnt they just lower the number of days it would take to get your first year of service time? Teams do this because they rationalize that being without that player for 2 weeks at the beginning of the season is not that bad. If they had to wait until May 15th to call that player up, I'm guessing that would be less tempting for a team looking to contend. If I were czar I'd make it more like half the season = a year of service time. Maybe less. September could be excepted if a guy makes his MLB debut in that month.
  6. Don't believe it's been officially announced, but since Sinclair owns the Fox Sports RSNs, which all have figured out in-market streaming AFAIK (I can stream FS Detroit games in-market), I have to assume the same will be true of Marquee.
  7. The Fox part was pretty obvious when they named Chris Myers 'backup play by play guy' - and well deserved for Len - but the radio part is sort of fun.
  8. Pitchers don't suck at hitting because they don't work on it enough, they suck at it because hitting his hard and pitching gets better and better. Scrappy McJunkball could scratch out a hit or two against the scrubs that pitched in yesteryear, not because he put in the time and effort. Right, and pitchers are the only guys on the field who are there almost entirely for their extremely valuable contribution to run prevention. Just about everyone else advanced in the game because of what they can do for run scoring primarily. The dudes who have both the natural talent to hit MLB pitching well and pitch well to MLB hitters are beyond absurdly rare. These things are true, but if not for the DH being standard just about everywhere after high school they probably wouldn't be as utterly useless at the plate as they are now.
  9. Nothing sums up this off-season for this franchise like back-to-back posts floating Arenado to the Cubs followed by 'no actually we want Scooter Gennett'
  10. The DH is dumb and lame, but this fight was lost when the DH started becoming a regular thing at lower levels of the game and pitchers no longer bothered working on their hitting. Might as well just get it over with.
  11. That last part is probably the most important. Sammy got a deserved reputation for being a surly prick over the years, and also cut himself out of baseball once he was retired (though who knows how welcome he would've been anyway). While it's unfair, that's definitely a big factor in him not being accorded forgiveness.
  12. Bryant can play the outfield. Put it this way, there is literally nothing, within reason, the Cubs can do right now that would increase their chances of winning a title this year more than going to get Arenado. Especially if the most likely alternative is him playing for St. Louis. This is entirely true, apart from the fact you are implying that trading for Arenado is included in the "within reason" realm, knowing what we know about budget constraints that are obviously being imposed. That's fair. I wasn't counting the violation of self-imposed constraints as being unreasonable, but obviously I'm daydreaming here.
  13. That's from the Mooney interview/article in The Athletic last week about adding Kimbrel and Castellanos last year, it's time for Tommy to nut up. The rallying cry for shipping Bryant out is to protect the future of the team, well here's your MVP caliber 3B locked up long term (after you give him another guaranteed year for removing his opt out) on a silver platter. Sure it's complicated but get it done. Full up with a better one already Bryant can play the outfield. Put it this way, there is literally nothing, within reason, the Cubs can do right now that would increase their chances of winning a title this year more than going to get Arenado. Especially if the most likely alternative is him playing for St. Louis.
  14. Players really ought not to have to choose between being paid what they're worth and having any hope of being on a competitive team ever.
  15. The Packers are just making one stupid mistake after another. Blowout city
  16. Lame-ass 'proper channels' cop-out by Mendoza. It's pretty damn clear that no amount of going through the 'proper channels' was going to stop Houston from doing what it was doing.
  17. When you've even managed to piss off Anthony Rizzo...
  18. Yeah, I think this is about where I land. I'm taking more amusement than I should in what's happening to the Astros right now and it would definitely horsefeathering suck if the Cubs were getting the same treatment.
  19. Saw the headline, has he been hurt? Or just trying to get out of the NFL alive? He missed like 7 games this year due to concussions. Not this year. The video above is from 2016, and he missed the rest of that season. Ever since, he was probably 1 more concussion from hanging it up, and I've been bracing for this for a while now. Luckily, as far as we know, he never got another concussion. I'm going to miss watching him a lot. My wife just got me a Kuechly jersey for Christmas because I had mentioned once that if I got another jersey it'd probably be him due to his already being a legend. I figured he would be out within a couple years. The most technically flawless player I've ever seen on a field.
  20. Why not? The WS title should be stripped. What does that do exactly? Force them to take the flag down? I always felt like the NCAA vacating wins was such a lame punishment. This would be the same effect. The NCAA vacating wins is lame because it's usually done for lame reasons (people giving players money) more so than because the punishment itself is lame. I didn't really expect them to vacate the title, but if you were ever going to do it, large-scale and provable cheating would be the reason to do it.
  21. Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin heading up the most ridiculous rivalry in CFB is a future too glorious for us to deserve.
  22. Given the Alex Cora thing, the real surprise would've been if they never found anything suspicious with Boston. This particular sign-stealing doesn't seem quite as egregious as Houston's but it's still obviously against the rules.
  23. Maybe this isn't the right topic to post this under...By my math, there's aprox. $75.6M coming off the books from last year, which includes players no longer on the roster and any salary decreases (i.e. Lester). And there's aprox. $41.8M in additional salary, which includes salary increases due to both contracts and expected arbitration increases (as projected by MLBTR) and all of the minor signings. So, that leaves approx. $33.8M decrease in money spent on salary from last year. Is there something I'm missing? Is there another reason other than they don't want to spend money for that amount of decrease in spending??? No. There is not.
