  1. You would be wrong. Bedard has taken the mantle of best lefty in baseball not named Johan Santana title. MacPhail and company might not be the sharpest tools in the shed. But Kershaw with all his value doesn't equal bedard in a 1 for 1. Cole Hamels?
  2. Where do you get the two million from? Jacque was scheduled to make 5.5 (and a bonus which the Cubs are paying). Infante made 1.5 million last year.
  3. You can't think of a worse player to acquire than a 26 year old player with the ability to play both middle infield positions, hit 16 HR's as a 22 year old in a pitcher's park, and only makes 1.3 million? I can: Kaz Matsui Why is everyone so upset about trading Jacque? Pie finally gets to play, and has the ability to outproduce Jones next year. Seems like the board is suffering from some serious Dusty-itis.
  4. Typical Cubs offseason: Cubs needs: OF power bat Cubs acquire: Weak hitting MI's Kaz Matsui and Omar Infante Cubs lose: OF semi power bat Why are you assuming we'll sign Matsui if we get Infante?
  5. No. So he doesn't have the skills of Ichiro? Why in the world do these media guys compare them like that then? Well....since they are both Japanese let's just group them together. What player in MLB is he most like? Probably someone like Raul Ibanez, but with better defense
  6. He's not really much of an asset to this team. He's either going to be holding back Pie, taking playing time away from Murton (they're pretty much equal but at least Murton has the possibility of improving) or sit on the bench where his skills aren't utilized. However, I agree he should be marketed as an asset, and hope a team bites and takes the whole salary.
  7. I don't know that you're correct in saying Pie is a better bet to be an improvement at his position over Soto. I didn't say that. I just think, overall, Pie has a better chance of producing adequately over a full season. In terms of their respective positions, Soto's bar is set so low in terms of Cubs catchers that he should be able to beat that fairly easily
  8. Really? I liked him a lot more when he hit 27 homers. I think he'll end up between his 2006 and 2007 power numbers if he plays everyday. Pie could do that too at the league minimum. If we can get someone to take the whole salary, I don't care what we get in return. We should be committing to Pie, and use part of Jacque's money to find a real backup CF, not someone who has been a starter their whole career and now has to sit unhappily on the bench. I don't know. He's not prohibitively exepnsive, and there's a decent chance that Pie is terrible. As bad as Jones is against LHP, Pie is worse. Jones isn't a bad guy to have as a backup in that instance. Or vice versa. And for what it's worth, I though he handled his 2 month banishment to the bench in a very good way. Oh, I agree he handled it very professionally. Jacque seems like a good person, and would likely go the whole year without publicly complaining. Regardless, how is Pie that big of a risk compared to any other young player? He's succeeded at every level in the minors; his only weakness is hitting lefties which, coincidentally, is also Jones's. I'd prefer to have a backup that can actually play against lefties. In my opinion, Pie is a better bet to produce than Soto, who came out of nowhere this year.
  9. Really? I liked him a lot more when he hit 27 homers. I think he'll end up between his 2006 and 2007 power numbers if he plays everyday. Pie could do that too at the league minimum. 10. That's the low end of expectations for him. He could potentially hit 40-50
  11. Does anyone outside of this board think he can still play SS?
  12. Sell me on it. I'm open to being swayed. Frees up Marshall to be traded with Murton for real OF/SS. We have righty bullpen depth (expecially if we resign Woody). Or, if Prior comes back and is useful. It kicks Marquis out of the rotation. Demp > Marquis you know. The hit to our bullpen would be minimal. It'd help our rotation. He's no less valuable as a starter than Marshall, but Marshall has a lot more trade value. Thus trade him on the market. Marshall can be traded anyways; we can put Gallagher in the rotation. And I'm not so sure Dempster is better than Marquis in the rotation
  13. How have the Cubs thrown Prior under a bus? If anything, they've protected him more than he's probably deserved. They've kept everyone in the dark about his various injuries for years and been patient with his various recoveries. Any talk of Prior being soft or faking injuries has come from outside the organization, not from Hendry, Baker, Piniella, or any of the players.
  14. Is this a joke? Drew maybe a weirdo but he's a career 128 OPS+ hitter and still relatively young. To compare Drew to Floyd at the stages in their careers is really foolish. He's going to be 32 and injury prone. I'm not that interested in the career stats, because it's very clear he's on the decline. If we're going to sign outfielders with career 128+ OPS's, we might as well add Sosa too.
  15. If 2007 was the only thing that mattered, you're right. But Drew and Floyd are not the same player. Actually, they are kind of the same player. Both are 30+, brittle outfielders who have seen significant declines in their OPS over the past few years (Actually, Floyd's has fluctuated while Drew's has consistently dropped). There's absolutely no reason to think that Drew can recover and post a .900 OPS again (unless he finds some HGH in his locker), just like there's no reason to think Floyd will ever hit 30 HR's again. Picking up Drew would be a waste of money equivalent to signing Marquis. While I'm not the biggest Murton fan, I'd rather have him at the minimum next year than Drew taking up 14 million dollars of our payroll.
  16. I realize the Sox didn't exactly get what they were hoping for, in terms of power production, out of Drew. But they won the WS with him and his .373 OBP in the lineup. Like last year, I think Drew would be a great fit for the Cubs (esp if he could play CF) - I wanted him more than Soriano. But I don't see the Sox eager to deal that OBP for Jones and Marquis. Maybe they take Murton for him, but I'm not really sure I'd want to do that deal (why add all the extra salary for the same OPS, even if Drew is "proven") and I don't know that Theo is going to want to either. What's the benefit to the Sox of having Jones and his 5 HR and .335 OBP replace JD Drew? The Cubs might as well trade Murton for a player that they will play, becuase they don't seem to want to play him. JD Drew is exactly what the Cubs need. However, I see little reason why Boston would trade him and I think he also has a NTC (but I'm not sure). No he's not. We had JD Drew last year, and our offense still sucked: Cliff Floyd: .284/.373/.422 JD Drew: .270/.373/.423 Not sure why anyone would want to take on that contract. If we're looking for little to no power in RF, we might as well just bring Floyd back for one year. At least everyone in the clubhouse likes him.
  17. We'd still be one power bat away from having a good offense, while at the same time paying an extra 10 million for a pitcher who would probably put up the same stats as Hill. Well, as Hoops suggested, maybe it's possible to get him without giving up Hill, but we're going to remain one power bat away from having a good offense as long as the organization keeps this infatuation with Ryan Theriot. If we get someone with power for the outfield, Theriot doesn't become as much of a problem. It's almost impossible to find a SS with legitimate power, not so for outfielders.
  18. We'd still be one power bat away from having a good offense, while at the same time paying an extra 10 million for a pitcher who would probably put up the same stats as Hill.
  19. After looking at Matsui's translation in the three main categories, I doubt Fukodome would be much better than Murton. If we're going to throw money at a marginal increase in production, we should just sign Rivera or Posada.
  20. Given the makeup of the team, I'd rather Kobe replace Deng than Gordon replace Hinrich. You have to look at the overall composition of the team. We're either going to have Gordon (who sucks at the point and is a defensive nonentity) or Thabo (raw, inexperienced, poor FG%, turnover prone) playing the point. How did Jameson Curry look in preseason? I didnt get to see many games, but isnt he a point? Also you still have Duhon, who can play it adequately. Duhon? JamesOn Curry? That's not a realistic backup plan. I'd really make every effort to hold onto Kirk. I understand about needed to balance salaries, but man. There will probably never be an opportunity like this again. We'd be trading a worse player (and not much younger) for one of the best players in the game. If Gordon isn't involved, trade him for another point. If Gordon is involved, live with Duhon. Either way, we're upgrading significantly offensively and defensively in the backcourt
  21. Link. Is it just me thinking that ol' Sully started the rumors? It's no secret that Wood prefers starting to relieving. If a team gave him a chance to start, I bet he'd take it. The question is, would he rather give starting a try, last a year at most and call it a career or see how long he can last as a reliever.
  22. I would prefer to keep Hinrich. Gordon is redundant with Bryant. I kind of see Wolf's point re: Deng. There's definetly a limit to Luol's ability, as good as he is. If you could build a deal around Deng and keep Hinrich and Gordon, I'd probably do it. The trickiest part is going to be matching salaries. They'd almost have to include Wallace, and LA is going to probably want Thomas, and maybe Thabo as well. I'm not sure how a sign/trade with Brown would work. Isn't Hinrich a base year compensation player anyways? That makes it almost impossible to trade him
  23. Only current players in the organization for now (so no Neifi Perez, Jose Macias, Tom Goodwin, or Henry Blanco references) 1. Norris Hopper CF 2. Ryan Freel 3B 3. Ken Griffey Jr RF 4. Brandon Phillips 2B (gotta break up those lefties, dude) 5. Adam Dunn LF (consistently getting pulled for Buck Coats in the 5th inning) 6. Jorge Cantu 1B 7. David Ross C 8. Alex Gonzalez SS Edwin Encarcion and Josh Hamilton on the bench. They'll both most likely get sent down in May.
  24. Hendry should have tried to get a bidding war going between the Reds and Orioles. After all, Novoa is the next Armando Benitez
  25. From 2006: Carmona enjoyed increased velocity in AAA, jumping up to 93-94 while topping out at 96...Carmona still doesn't miss a lot of bats and probably never will. But someone with his stuff shouldn't be nearly as hittable as he has been in the upper minors...Carmona has the necessary pitches to be a frontline starter, but he still has plenty of development remaining... Even with the increased velocity, his peripherals still weren't very good in AAA. This is pretty much what they said about him every year: his stuff is good but he doesn't miss a lot of bats. Gallagher's scouting reports are entirely different. Numbers aren't the entire story for most prospects.
