  1. This is why you need more than numbers when comparing prospects. While it wasn't expected that Carmona would be a Cy Young contender and one of the best pitchers in the league, he always had a high ceiling and was projectable with a mid-90's sinker. Gallagher is a different pitcher, who doesn't throw consistently as hard and doesn't really have a plus pitch. I hope Gallagher becomes Carmona, but I think they're entirely different.
  2. Replace Prior with Hill and they might start listening. You could probably replace Zambrano with Ramirez too
  3. Or you could just do like the Bears did and do whatever you want anyway and ultimately have the landmark status revoked as "punishment'.. Just sayin'.... Soldier Field was a federal landmark, not a city landmark
  4. I'm still trying to figure out what "selfish situational hitter" means. If it means he'd rather drive in a run with a man on second than bunt him to third, then I guess I'm missing the problem.
  5. It's not like he replaced Zambrano with Marquis. Marmol has been lights out all year, and there's no reason to think he couldn't have pitched good innings in relief. We lost game one because we scored one run on 4 hits.
  6. No, probably not. My guess is he'll move lower in the order in 2-3 years when he loses his speed (that doesn't mean that's a very good reason)
  7. I've said it before, I think Logan White is the best avail. GM. If you gave me the choice of the potnetial unknown of White and the expected results of Hendry, I'd go with White. Yes, this. As well as Logan White has done as a farm director, I'm not sure how well this translates into being a good GM. Our current GM who everyone bashes was hired when he was the farm director of the #1 farm system in baseball. I'm not sure how well these skills translate from one job to another.
  8. I'm glad to see Marquis off the roster, but does anyone really want Z going on 3 day's rest? What about Marshall getting consideration?
  9. They do. You're right, I forgot about him. I'm sure Dusty would love to have Jacque Jones back on his team
  10. This may go down as the most epic waste of young impact talent since we managed to pull it off earlier in the decade. Too bad they don't have a young shortstop
  11. I'll give them Lee if that's what it takes
  12. Kendall has been awesome for 1 month. The other 2 months his OPS is in the 5's thats not good. Couple that with his terrible defense and inability to throw out King Kong Bundy trying to steal, and his performance with the Cubs has been subpar. There is plenty of reason to believe Soto could have put up better numbers on the average then Jason Kendall. Additionally, regardless of Soto's production, we would have a much better idea of what to do for Catcher next year. Ya, that is exactly what I am thinking about these last 2 months. And by the way, I still think Kendall has been awesome for this team I'm not sure I follow...I was trying to say that we should have started Soto regularly a long time ago to get a good read as to whether or not he could take over the starting job next year. Kendall is a defensive liability. Too many passed balls and not enough thrown-out baserunners. So was Barrett yet most people on this board looked past it in favor of his offensive strengths.
  13. That's not true at all. People on here were calling for Marmol to eventually be moved to the bullpen. The Cubs organization during the winter said that Marmol was their future closer. There was significant question both last year and in the offseason about which way Marmol's future would go. I was speaking to the organization's view, so what people here thought has little relevance. However, I don't remember the organization stating that he was the future closer that early on. The first I had heard it mentioned was early on in the season. That being said, my memory isn't the greatest, so I'll take your word for it. Like Rob said, it remains to be seen what would happen with him vs. hitters the 2nd and 3rd time through, but you gotta think that someone with his level of dominance should be given a shot in the rotation if the situation allows. I'd prefer it to be a true commitment, rather than a half-assed look then a knee-jerk pull at the first sign of trouble. There was always talk of him possibly moving to the bullpen in the future. I think he got a pretty good shot last year at the rotation and, while he may become an effective starter, I'm not sure he could ever display the dominance he has showed as a reliever
  14. Santana is a pretty bad comparison for this. He was in the bullpen originally so he could hide in the majors after being picked in the Rule V draft. There really wasn't any question that his future was in the rotation.
  15. Not to pick on you, Tim, but this gets brought up a lot when talking about Kendall. Nobody seemed to care when Barrett was on the team and couldn't throw anyone out or call a good game. Back then, the majority of the board seemed to think, "Who cares about the defense, his offense is well above-average." Now, with Kendall exceeding expectations with the bat, his defense gets brought up as a reason to bench him. Don't really understand it
  16. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/index.jsp?sid=t451 Congrats to Soto. Hopefully this will solidify his starting spot next year
  17. What about his .851 OPS since the ASB and .931 OPS in August?
  18. How long has Monroe been on the team? And when talking about Jones, are you referring to Pie as the younger player?
  19. dude, nice that you're in Abingdon. I grew up in Galesburg. that being said, everything in your post is completely wrong. first of all, the Cub payroll has not topped 100M to date. not this year, not any year. secondly, the Cubs under Hendry are just over .500 if i remember correctly. thirdly, the Cub farm was NEVER rated top three. the Cubs, under Hendry, have made the playoffs. is Hendry good? Or even passable? No, not in my opinion. However, you need to set the record straight, dude... The Cubs system was ranked that high at one point. And Hendry was the one who built it
  20. No, he is replacing Murton. Soriano and Pagan will be back and Murton won't be on the final 25, for the playoff roster. Taking bets now. If Monroe plays well, my guess is neither would be on the playoff roster
  21. While Monroe isn't a very good player, he's essentially replacing Pagan. He could help down the stretch
  22. What a friggin waste of an asset that would be. Err, what SSR said. Asset? What exactly does Cedeno bring to the table? 24 year old who has torn up AAA. Could be valuable in a trade if we find a gullible GM...so basically if we try to make a trade with ourselves. But has been nothing short of pathetic at the big league level. His career OPS+ is lower than Neifi's. That should tell you all you need to know about the guy. He's played one full year in the majors. If he had been starting from day one this year, I think he'd be putting up respectable numbers What makes you think that? The fact that he's put up stellar numbers in AAA two years in a row, was always young for his league coming up, and has always been a well-regarded prospect due to his athleticism and tools. I'm not saying he'd be setting the league on fire, but I think he's better than the line he put up last year

  24. Does it matter? We already have one overpriced outfielder on the team
  25. Anyone know when the press conference is?
