  1. Sabathia or Burnett would be the best, but Wolf would be a decent option if he's back to his '01-'03 form. Since then, he's been a Jason Marquis type. With an almost 3-1 K/BB ratio, Wolf has done well this year, he'd be worth taking a gamble on if we can't land either Burnett (my #1 choice) or Sabathia (would be #1, but he'll cost a lot).
  2. I'd rather consider Choo($390,400, R/F,L/F) of Cleaveland Indians if possible. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=6205&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fmlb%2fplayers%2fsplits%3fplayerId%3d6205 Other than the fact that he hits LH, what's the difference between him and Matt Murton as major league hitters/LFs? Murt's about a year older...Choo's got a lot more SBs at the minor league level, but Murton's got a better success rate in the majors (8-11, Choo is 5-9) I still can't believe that Murton is not on this team, especially with Soriano out.
  3. Roberts still wouldn't be a bad target if we could play Kosuke in CF and DeRosa in RF...but with Theriot in the 2 hole, we have no use for Roberts' bat really.
  4. I guess it can't hurt, but I'd rather they let him try to stick at SS first...unless he really just doesn't have the arm for that...which wouldn't make sense given that they want him to play C.
  5. Well I understand he's played catcher in the past, so it's probably not a new concept to him, but it still seems weird to see a guy listed as a SS when he's drafted but intended to be played at Catcher *if* he signs. I think it's a little early to start labeling guys as "future utility players".
  6. What are the odds Cerda was actually taken with the intent to move him to catcher?
  7. The two people I'd really like to see sign are two of the more questionable ones...obviously Gray is, but Cerda needs to sign. He's got a nice bat, especially as a MIF.
  8. I like a lot of the arms we took, and have no problem with Cashner in the first, regardless of whether he's a starter or reliever. Carpenter and Shafer, good picks with some upside. I like the Cerda pick, and I don't mind Ryan Flaherty (although he was a reach)...but there just doesn't seem to be any potential "impact" bat out of this draft. Idk if the Dopiraks, Harveys, and Pattersons of the past have scared the Cubs off of HS bats, but it needs to stop. You can find failures at every level, at every position, in every organization.
  9. Is he any good, or is this just because of the Bob Brenly connection?
  10. We've got some usefulness out of our system. Theriot gets overlooked as a hitter to come from our system, and I'd say he's done a good job. Obviously Soto. Fontenot has been a quality bench player, and Hoffpauir looks to have at least a future PH/spot start role. We still have Pie Patterson and Murton waiting in Triple A, as well as a few others down the line. We might not have many top prospects, but we have some decent players come from our system.
  11. Hill's always looked pissed off and unhappy on the mound. I wish he'd throw strikes again, if he was pitching anywhere near his '07 or second half '06 levels, he'd be a great #2-3 and would be as good as anyone we can get at the deadline.
  12. Well I'm assuming since he pitched 2 innings, he pitched the 8th and 9th. The score was 6-3 when they started the 8th. I think that still qualifies as a save.
  13. Still a ton of Ks, but decent BBs and over numbers. He was one of my favorites, but he's 24 and in A ball now. I hope he can make it to the Bigs someday, but he's hit the wall at AA twice now, and he should be hitting at least as well as he is in his 3rd go round in the FSL. Good to see Castillo make it. His BBs are down, his power is down, and overall #s are down...At 21 in the FSL, he's got time for a catcher. Adduci reminds me of Adam Greenberg, only taller. Both are/were 23 and playing at Daytona. Greenberg just had a bit more pop.
  14. I like managers who defend their players.
  15. I've heard it both ways...some reports saying he's more intriguing and has more upside as a RHP, but others say he's likely to be given a look at SS first.
  16. I'm not convinced the Brewers even want Rickie longterm. His defense remains costly and his hitting is so streaky. As that team sorts through who amongst their young core group to keep and who to let go, I think Weeks is at or near the top of the let go list. He's gotta be. Other than his solid '06 (which was his worst year, power wise) he's never hit .240. He does get on base at a good clip and can steal some bases, but he doesn't seem like the type you invest long term money in.
  17. Hosmer if he somehow slips to 19. If not, which I doubt he will, I like Casey Kelly.
  18. I've liked Gracey the few times I've heard him broadcasting.
  19. Dylan Johnston is showing some pop, another double. Hitting .250, his SLG is .463. Still a lot of Ks, too many CS. If he could have stuck at SS, or even 2b, he'd be a heck of a player to watch for the next few years. As a RF/1b, the power is less impressive.
  20. I hope they do get a decent athlete who actually has some baseball skills as well. I think Casey Kelly may be a good choice, because he's athletic and he's been around baseball all his life. Good combination.
  21. I love the people that rip on his "weak season" without acknowledging the fact that he was sick, he had mono. Most reports I've seen about the kid don't really question his contact skills. For the most part, the questions I've seen about him are all regarding whether or not he'll stay at 3b or have to move to 1b/LF. I'd say we can wait until short season ball gets started and Vitters is at least a couple hundred ABs deep into his professional career before making any sort of judgment on his career. Like many others have pointed out, he's not 19 until after this season, give him a break.
  22. If it was pure shoulder soreness, it would be a concern. However, since it's more related to his neck, it doesn't worry me as far as potential shoulder injury. Obviously you can and should be concerned with most injuries, but this one just doesn't worry me.
  23. Jovan Rosa hitting .305/.372/.482 is the closest thing I see to good in our minors. Dylan Johnston showing some pop with 6 HRs so far...LH pop is always a plus. That's it?
  24. Is .405/.583/.595/1.179 worth checking out? I'm too lazy to look. Who's doin that? EDIT: Nvm, not worth it. You forgot to mention he's 27 and in AA for the 14th time.
  25. He will not be a tough sign. As a UT fan, and an avid follower of recruiting, it has been made very apparent that Kelly will be a professional baseball player if drafted in the first round. He would join a jammed depth chart at QB at Tennessee, and the baseball program is still in transition under first year coach Todd Raleigh. So, it is almost a no-brainer that Kelly ends up signing a contract with the team who drafts him, provided it is in the first round. He might use the scholarship as leverage, but I suspect that's all it is. I also feel that he gets his first shot at being an every day player. He would play SS from day one at UT, and would likely be a weekend starter, but I think his value as a left side of the infield type of player is pretty high at this point. I think I like this potential pick a lot. I don't know if it fits the Cubs' style or not, but I like SS's with some upside.
