  1. Matt Craig signed elsewhere because we woulda sent him to Peoria this year to get some work in at bullpen catcher. Lou Piniella still hates Fox from 2007. Casey McGehee was the worst Cub in the last 50 years. First two just made me laugh...but why is McGehee so bad?
  2. I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but it would be nice to have Casey McGehee as a RH bat off the bench and backup 3b/C/1b option. Is Matt Craig still around for backup 3b? Fox as the backup corner guy/RH power hitter off the bench isn't horrible. Hard to use rookies in that role, but we could do worse.
  3. Unless Johnson suddenly morphs into a power hitter, he's basically Fontenot (a 2, 7, 8 hitter) which doesn't really add anything to the middle of our lineup. The point is not just to acquire any LH hitter, but more likely to acquire a LH hitter capable of hitting in the middle of the lineup.
  4. Garland ended up decent...ummm other than that, I can't think of too many.
  5. If you're not willing to shell out the 10's of millions of dollars it takes to sign good players at the major league level, you better be willing to spend 10 million to lock up the potential prospects you can, so at least you have young talent/trading chips.
  6. I guess I really hadn't noticed how solid of a season Guyer is having. If he can handle playing CF (which he did tonight, I don't know how frequently he's done it this year) that's a nice upside.
  7. I agree, the fact that our players are willing to stick up for one another (which wouldn't be necessary if Soriano had just run the dang ball out and got to 2nd) is a very good sign to me. If Lilly/etc has to miss a game or two, I think we'll be okay. Now if it was Dempster, Z, or Harden retaliating and missing a start/starts, it may be a different story...but our #4 pitcher doing it is different
  8. Okay, regardless, people shouldn't jump the gun on a guy who is still 18/19.
  9. Ascanio, Hart, Weurtz, and Lieber (assuming he's not back before then) Pie, Hoffpauir, Dubois/Fox They need to add one more guy, a 3rd catcher. Preferably they'd add another backup SS type, but we don't really have many options, and none of them are on the 40 man. I can see McGehee added as the 3rd catcher/1b/3b. It's almost got to be him or Koyie Hill, so it depends on if they want versatility or a solid defensive catcher (which the other 2 are already).
  10. .289/.341/.430, 11 HR, 76 rbi in AAA (412 AB) Plays catcher and 3b, 1b too. With a couple of roster spots added (3 for 2 in the oakland trade, Eyre DFA) to the 40, Casey McGehee would make a ton of sense as the 3rd catcher. He's not going to blow you away at the plate or on defense, but he can hold his own enough to man that 3rd spot as good as a Koyie Hill, and it's better than bringing up Castillo. Plus I'm sure we'll see Jake Fox as some RH pop off the bench now that he's hot in AA, and he's another "emergency" catcher, although that's the extent of his catching abilities anymore.
  11. wow wow....Lets just hope he can be a major league regular.....To many cub high draft picks didn't even make it to the show...Cpatt would be a successful cub pick based on how we have drafted. Okay, I know he's a long ways a way, but he's got more potential than probably any pick we've had in the past 10 years, as far as hitters go. Harvey and Dope were HUGE power threats, but weren't real hitters at any point. Vitters is a real hitter with power potential.
  12. Vitters could be one special player. I don't remember who it was, but one comparison was to a RH version of Joe Mauer, with 25 HR+ power. Now THAT, is a #3 hitter.
  13. He's intriguing when you look at the success he's had. His K's are up slightly (117 in 140 IP this year, 106 in 141 IP last year). 7.52 K/9 this year, 6.77 K/9 last year. He's still not an overpowering strikeout guy, though, and he's been a dominantly AO pitcher, similar to Lilly. He's been an All-Star for his league 3 years running. One would think that a guy with as good of numbers as he's had, he could be a useful pitcher somewhere down the road. He's also very tough on RHs so far in AAA (.148 BAA compared to .273 BAA for LHs).
  14. Why lump Vitters in with Harvey and Dope? Vitters is batting three-thirty or three-forty something right now. He's 18 hitting over .300 in short season ball...give him a break.
  15. Baby steps, raisin, baby steps. The fact that he's smoking the ball over over the field AND drawing lots of walks at Boise should be a big positive. He's also got 13 walks in those 91 ABs, giving him a .432 OBP to go along with his .352 avg. A very respectable .080 IsoD. How about his nearly (or maybe over as of right now) .700 SLG? If he's going hit for decent power, K's will be high. If he can keep hitting, the K's aren't as much of a concern. I don't think he'll ever be a low K guy. I see him being a guy who can hit 25-30 HRs, play good defense, and hit .270.
  16. He needed this. Build some confidence, let him move up to Peoria next year after finally hitting the cover off the ball.
  17. What exactly makes you think that a 22 year old in A ball (who couldn't hit in AA) with a .363 SLG (that's right, it's lower than his OBP) has 20 HR potential? He's got 4 HRs in 551 ABs over the past 2 seasons.
  18. Why give up prospects for marginal upgrades? DeJesus is basically a Matt Murton type, offensively, except he's LH and can play CF. If we are trading for anything, it should be a RH bat off the bench. We have Fontenot and Ward, and Johnson/Edmonds....a RH bat would be huge.
  19. Same here. I bet the role we see Edmonds as the rest of the season is as a pinch hitter, he doesn't look to moving too well. HR for Edmonds, I think he's alright.
  20. I wouldn't know much about the difference in his mechanics or anything like that, but I would say building some confidence in the bullpen in high-pressure spots and coming in this spring in the best shape of his career have something to do with it. He's also added that timing mechanism with his glove flip/wave thing. That's more of a mental thing, but he's always had good pure talent, consistency was a big problem. Health + consistency + confidence + pre-existing talent= one suddenly dangerous starting pitcher.
  21. And we thought Ryu was bad for hitting an osprey (or however u spell it.) Someone's career is over.
  22. Samson is 2-3 with 3 SB and an RBI. He stole 2nd and 3rd in the first, and stole 2nd later in the game. Other than that, not much noise from the Chiefs tonight. A few hits here and there, only XBH was a double by Mercedes. Rosa is 0-3 with 3 Ks.
  23. Raisin beat me to it. 3 runs on 3 hits so far for Peoria. A HR for Ridling, a double for Samson, and a single for Guyer.
  24. Well the encouraging thing is that he appears to be back to hitting how he was even AFTER they worked with him on shortening his stride...Hopefully this enables him to have better success as a major leaguer. Edmonds is okay, but he could hit a slump again. Regardless, the odds that we'll want to go into next year with Edmonds as our starting CF aren't good. Plus, Pie would be a nice bat/pinch runner/defensive replacement for the bench come October.
  25. I agree. Next year we'll probably see Vitters, Ceda, Samardzija, Cashner, and Veal as our top 5. Vitters will probably be a top 30 prospect overall, Ceda and Samardzija have a chance at cracking the top 100, IMO.
