  1. "The initial deal is worth $80,000, and it essentially replaces the scholarship to Illinois State that Springfield passed on to sign with the Cubs. It can be used for a college education should something like an injury cut short his baseball career. Springfield also said he's still negotiating his signing bonus." Seems to me like the 80 K was more for his eventual education and not the whole signing bonus.
  2. Glad to see Springfield signed. Always like to have some high-upside guys down in Mesa/Boise to keep an eye on.
  3. 1. Josh Vitters 2. Jay Jackson 3. Starlin Castro 4. Andrew Cashner 5. Hak-Ju Lee 6. Jeff Smardzija 7. Chris Carpenter 8. Brett Jackson 9. DJ LeMahieu 10.Tony Thomas There's a big drop off after the 1, a bigger drop off after 3, and a huge drop off after 5. Then again, not many systems have potential all-stars for all of their top 10 prospects. I'd say the overall system looks pretty good, just lacking that one true star player.
  4. Castro ended up 4/4 tonight with a HR and CS.
  5. back to back doubles, no outs, indians up 1-0
  6. Best trade option for us, IMO. The guy can play 3b while Ramirez is down/needs rest, he can spell Theriot a little more often than Blanco because his bat it better, and he could probably play some 2b too. If the light suddenly goes on, then he's a better alternative than almost anyone available for trade....but the chances of that are unknown (hasn't been given much of a shot). I don't know why more teams don't go after prospects that an original team has lost interest in. As for Wood, you could also put Fontentot back in a utility role when Aramis comes back and slide Theriot to second base. Give Wood some playing time and he could end up being what Khalil Greene was supposed to be (not defensively, of course). We did get Brad Snyder, even though he never had any intention of using him. Also, I think John Ford Griffin was a pretty decent prospect at one point, even thouh hes well on the wrong side of 30 now. Good point on Snyder...but as you said, we never had any intention of using him. That's a shame, because he's obviously a guy with some talent. It seems a lot of times, once a prospect "fails" that sort of sticks with him, even though he could be a very helpful piece to a team somewhere else. I know there are exceptions to this, but it seems to generally hold true.
  7. I suffered almost an identical shoulder injury to Ramirez a few years ago, and I had it pop out about 3 more times before finally having surgery and getting it corrected (probably 5-6 months after the initial dislocation). I would say we ought to be careful with him, but the only options are having surgery right now and shutting him down for the season...or hoping/praying it doesn't happen again until the season is over. With the current state of the Cubs' offense, we know what the choice will be.
  8. Best trade option for us, IMO. The guy can play 3b while Ramirez is down/needs rest, he can spell Theriot a little more often than Blanco because his bat it better, and he could probably play some 2b too. 9. Theriot's probably a .750 OPS type of guy at SS, which is about as much as you can ask for. He's okay defensively, and as good as you can get at SS without giving up a plethora of top prospects, which don't have.
  10. Not sure if it's been mentioned, but apparently the Cubs want to try Springfield at SS, 2b, 3b. "Round 7, Blair Springfield, CF/SS, MacArthur (Decatur, Ill.) High School: He has signed a national letter of intent to attend Illinois State. Springfield would be tested at a number of positions, including third and second. The Cubs like his bat."
  11. Has anyone else noticed that Samson has taken 21 BB to only 5 K on the year? That's crazy good, especially for our system. He's hitting .286 since the beginning of May (.232 in April) and has an OBP of .350 on the year (despite hitting .258). If he could just grow into some power (3 XBHs, 0 HRs) he could be a really useful middle IF.
  12. I don't necessarily see him as a "five tool" guy unless he proves he can steal bases and hit HRs. To me, he's more of a "well rounded" type who can do a little bit of everything, but doesn't really excel in all areas either. http://baseballbeginnings.com/2009/05/27/brett-jackson-qa/ I'm rooting for the kid, he has the right attitude about things.
  13. Only LH. The cubs are all about LHs this year, pitching and hitting wise.
  14. Blair Springfield, IF, from McArthur HS in IL
  15. Brooks Raley? (sp?) From Texas A &M, another LHP

  17. Did we just take a SS from British Columbia?
  18. of all the major sports drafts, MLB's is by far the hardest to project/get a feel for. I know the Jackson pick doesn't look like the right one, but who knows? I'll give it time...I'm not a big fan of taking that type of player again (a lot like Colvin) but the other two picks seem relatively solid.
  19. FA pool = awful. 15 team league, fairly deep rosters. The best available hitter is Laynce Nix. C Mauer 1b Pujols 2b Kennedy (I just traded for Freddy Sanchez, hasn't processed yet) 3b Figgins SS Hardy OF Ibanez OF Dye OF Scott UTIL Andy LaRoche UTIL Scott Podsednik Bench: Milton Bradley, Aramis Ramirez :( , Ben Francisco (just traded him for Freddy) It's a Rotisserie league, I'm 1st in HR, RBI, OPS, R, and 3rd in AVG...last in SB (I just recently got Figgins and Pods) The real problem I'm running into is the fact that only 5-6 teams are willing to deal, and the 2-3 that match up well trade wise just aren't real reasonable.
  20. Pujols, Volstad, Dye for Adrian Gonzalez, Halladay, Victorino I need help in the pitching department. I know the drop off from Pujols to Gonzalez will be big, but Halladay is the best pitcher in the game right now. I could also use Victorino for some speed, since I'm last in steals. I just can't decide if it's worth giving up Pujols. I'm trying to explore my other options before I make this, but I may have to do it if I want a good pitcher.
  21. on pace means on pace Man this board's been uptight lately. Lately? Okay...all season? haha
