  1. the good thing is we can take our time with him, as we've already got 6 or more options for decent starters under contract. Z, Lilly, Marquis, Hill, Marshall, Gallagher, maybe even Hart. Let Prior come back at his own pace and regain his confidence.
  2. Not the only one. I just gave up disagreeing a long time ago. Now I don't feel nearly as bad...haha.
  3. Looks like I'm the only Dane Cook fan here... :?
  4. If they had a spot on the 40 man for him, I'd say he probably would be recalled, but he was DFA'd so he's not on the 40 man roster anymore.
  5. Here's the guys I think have the best shot to be called up: Gallagher, Cotts, Ohman, Rapada (once eligible) Soto, Cedeno, Moore, Patterson, Pagan (when healthy) There's still even a few more guys that could be useful players.
  6. The difference is that a club is a lot more likely to know whether they'll need pitching as opposed to hitting than they are going to know if they'll need a SS or CF or C or whatever position you can think of. As for whether or not Soto is a good player, I guess that's purely opinion. If you don't want to think he's that good, fine. I don't think he's an all-star or anything like that, but I think he's as good as what we've had catching this year, better defensively, and can hold his own with the bat. Considered the price a decent FA catcher may cost, if we can get the same production out of a 300K dollar rookie, why wouldn't we?? With big money at the corners, LF, and in our starting rotation (well, 3/5ths), we need a few cheap starters like Soto, Murton, Theriot, Pie, etc. Unless you plan on becoming the Yankees, we won't have a 10 mil $ guy at every spot.
  7. I don't really know where to start with this post. Need plays absolutely no role in drafting players, outside of the position/pitching holes. Obviously if a team is stacked with position players, they should focus on pitching, and vice versa. Wieters may have been considered a better player by some or even most, but it was not universal. I know Vitters is a high schooler, but to say he's raw isn't terribly fair. He was ranked as the most advanced high school bat available and closest to the bigs. He doesn't fit the mold that usually take a while to progress, he's not all power or all average, he's a nice mixture of the two. Plus, Vitters will stick at 3b most likely...if not, he'll probably be hitting the bigs around the time we're looking for a Derrek Lee replacement...I think he'll stick at 3b personally. Oh, and purely by defense and power, Soto has starter potential. Nevermind the fact that he draws walks and has hit for a very good average this season.
  8. Have you watched his ABs? He looks like he's more emotionally invested in his hitting than his pitching at times...
  9. With as polished as they seem to think Vitters is, he will be at Peoria next year. I don't see them taking a terribly slow approach with Vitters. I actually would like to see him hit Boise when he signs, but not having played in a while it may be better for him to go to Mesa for a few...
  10. - Sun-Times I hope they are warming up the ink. Only two days left.... I don't think there's any reason to believe he won't be signed. The Cubs will be willing to pay him, he's a top talent, and he hasn't shown any signs of not wanting to play for the Cubs.
  11. Good deal, I think he's still got a chance to turn into a decent power hitter, he's played very well this 2nd half, and he's only 23, so it's not like he's out of time. Ryan Harvey...starting to turn it on. Hopefully this is more the result of him getting healthier and starting to feel more comfortable than him just being on a hot streak.
  12. Someone already hit on this...but I think the reasons they'd go with Patterson before Pie are 1) he's a top of the order guy and they don't think Pie is and 2) Pie may still be bothered by the leg... Personally, I want Murton to get the ABs in LF...if they want to play DeRosa in RF and let Patterson play 2b, fine. Patterson 2b Theriot SS Lee 1b Ramirez 3b DeRosa RF Jones CF Murton LF Kendall C
  13. Looks like Kroeger, possibly....maybe Craig (although Moore and Fox already being on the roster make Craig a little less valuable)...and don't be surprised if a guy like Chirinos or Rojas is added as well, as both are middle IF with some potential. (Rojas is a good glove, Chirinos has a pretty decent bat at times)
  14. Once they're sure Blanco is going to be healthy, they'll be okay with Hill "being exposed" because we'll still have Kendall, Blanco, Soto and worst case scenario, Tony Richie and Jake Fox. I have a feeling we won't see Soto until September. It's a shame because after Blanco he's our best defensive catcher, and he's probably our best hitting catcher at this point. Hill hasn't provided much offensively, but he's been an asset behind the plate so far with his game calling.
  15. .316/.371/.571/.932 with 8 HR/28 RBI in 139 AB post ASB for Dopirak. His season average is up to .270 now. Give him the rest of the season at least before writing him off completely...he's still only 23 and has had a few injuries to overcome.
  16. There's a red-headed OF capable of .300/.365 sitting on our bench.
  17. He has played some OF before, and he used to play 3b so he probably has an average arm at least. I don't think he's the fastest guy in the world, but neither is Cliff Floyd. If we had the prospects necessary to get Tex, we'd have a killer lineup. He'd give us the lefty bat (well, switch hitter) in the middle of the order that we need. Soriano, Lee, Tex, Ramirez...that's a nice lineup...
  18. I don't think they have. In that event, I think I'd prefer Mateo right now for a spot start. Has Mateo got above Single A in his rehab starts yet?? I'd give the ball to Gallagher before Mateo, but he's probably 2nd in line, just ahead of Holliman. I guess Wade Miller is the only other real option outside of Gallagher/Mateo, and I don't want to see him on the Cubs again. It'd be nice to hear something on Guzman, he's an arm we could use down the stretch from the pen as a long relief/spot starter.
  19. I thought Buck Coats was in Iowa's OF, not back in Boise's IF.
  20. Craig, both Hill and Bowen are switch hitters. They both swing from both sides of the plate...neither of them qualify as "hitters". Congrats to Soto, and let's hope he can put up respectable numbers here and be a nice piece to the puzzle. Goodbye Koyie/Rob.
  21. I don't see this being about Cedeno or Soto (because either of them could be brought up to start at any given time by DFA'ing Hill or Izturis)...Murton and possibly Jake Fox are probably the options in-house. I'd prefer Murton, if for no other reason than he's had big league success already against both LHs and RHs, and he's about the same age as Fox anyways. Fox K's more, walks less, and will likely have a lower average as well. He does offer a bit of pop (17 HRs, .500 SLG) and more versatility (1b/OF/C/3b). Bottom line, if Fox was an option at catcher, he'd be up already, but in the OF I think Murton's the better choice.
  22. The only thing now that could hurt Murton's chances of getting the RF job again would be the emergence of Fontenot...the Cubs may want DeRosa in RF a little more often to get Fontenot on the field. I like Floyd off the bench, Pagan isn't an everyday starter to me, and Pie hasn't produced as well as we'd like. If Murton figures out his stroke at AAA, I don't see why he wouldn't get another shot in RF to be a 5-6 hitter in this lineup.
  23. Murton is still gonna be a .300/.370/.450 hitter in the bigs. I'm still not convinced Murton can't handle RF defensively. I just don't think there's any ABs for him. A 25 year old making the minimum who can put up a respectable line like that is a nice player to have.
  24. Good call. I guess I hadn't seen how well he was doing. Another note: After looking at the box score, it has Donaldson as 1-3 with a 2b, and a 2nd catcher (Sabates) with a 3b. Not sure where the 2-4 came from, but I'm kinda interested to know what the deal was.
  25. just a couple thoughts... 1. Dope is on fire. OPS over 1.000 for the 2nd half (51 AB so far). His back is against the wall as far as being a prospect goes, nice to see he's fighting a little bit. 2. Donaldson had a nice day at the plate. 3. My guess is Ty Wright or Donaldson to Peoria.
