  1. Burke is making it EXTREMELY difficult to leave him off of any Cubs Top 10 lists.
  2. Nah, Keenyn Walker and Chad Taylor are definitely guys that are major overslots. Taylor has already turned us down though, not sure if we are still trying anything with him or not. Eric Erickson is a guy that I've had my eye on, seems like someone who could easily go out next year and improve his stock with a solid year. Maybe, we see enough in him now to give him the money he wants now...... Andrew Clark appears to want major overslot money too.
  3. Alright, we've got basically a week to go, as far as signings go: It appears as if Taylor, Esquivel, and DeJiulio have all told us "no". So, out of what's left, what are we hoping for? And how many more guys is realistic to sign anyway? I'm hoping for 2-3 of the following to sign.....(In ordrer of preference) Whaley Sheppard Walker Clark Erickson Dunn Lambert Considering we got Raley and Burruel, I won't be too upset if we don't do much else, but I definitely want as much as possible and we haven't really spent big on anyone other than Raley as it is(unless Burruel is way over slot). So, 2-3 of this group seems plausible to ask for, right?
  4. I think he's definitely top 100. Depending on HOW glowing the reports are at the end of the year, I think it's possible to see him at the edge of the top 50. Our system is improving for sure, we'll have at least 3 in the top 100, probably 4 with Jackson and an outside chance of more with either Carpenter or Lee..........
  5. That's great to hear about Antigua. Listing him second at his age is pretty impressive really.
  6. Antigua wound up with a line of 4.2 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, and 6 K's. He got the first 2 in the 5th, then walked a pair, was lifted and Beliveau allowed both to score. He's definitely becoming someone to really keep an eye on. I'm starting to think he could be a borderline top 10 guy for us next year and considering the agressive promotions recently, maybe even start off at Daytona possibly?
  7. Brett Jackson has hit his second homer at Peoria and Antigua allowed a solo shot in the second inning, but through 3, that's all he's given up and he has 5 K's......
  8. Sergio Burruel is making his debut for Arizona tonight. He's listed as an OF at MiLB, not sure if it's a mistake or not(he's DHing tonight) but I thought he was a C......
  9. Austin Kirk is making his debut for Arizona tonight and in the first inning walked one and struck out 3.......
  10. Brett Jackson hit his first homer for Peoria tonight as well. Archer went 6, scattering 3 hits and 3 walks, to go along with 2 K's.....No runs allowed. The minors are definitely ALOT more interesting to follow now than they were even last year.
  11. My guess for BA's next year top 10 would be....... 1 Vitters (top 30 overall) 2 Cashner (top 60) 3 Castro (top 75) 4 Jackson (top 100) 5 Lee ( will move into top 100 next year once he hits full season) 6 Carpenter(will move into top 100 with continued health next year) 7 B Jackson 8 Rhee 9 Searle 10 LeMahieu Next 10..... 11 Burke 12 Coleman 13 Flaherty 14 Antigua 15 Watkins 16 Clevenger 17 Barney 18 Archer 19 Huseby 20 Castillo 21-30 21 McDaniel 22 M Smith 23 Thomas 24 Gaub 25 Colvin 26 Lake 27 Parker 28 Guyer 29 Cales 30 Jung (wont have pitched enough to warrant a higher ranking yet) Overall system ranking improves to 13-16 range.
  12. You still have to give up a pick if you sign him before June, right?
  13. Sure, the Pads had an interest in Olsen at one point, but isn't it highly possibly that they value Marshall more than they would Olsen? I know I would if I were them anyway. Getting Heilman could just be a replacement for Marshall as our swing guy basically and the Peavy trade would include Marshall, along with Vitters and whatever else we wind up sending them....
  14. Can someone tell me a little about Jon Nagle? I have no clue as to who he is..... My breakout guys: Barney, Rosa(I think some of those doubles start to turn into homers), Guyer, Caridad, Searle, Antigua My disappointments: Castillo, Nelson Perez, Atkins, Rhee(won't be back to full strength this year) Carpenter, Suarez
  15. So based on the info from BA, we basically know who 18 of the top 30 prospects are, although not in order.......Who do we think the other 12 will be that haven't been mentioned yet? My guesses are Junior Lake, Hoffpauir, Darwin Barney(these 3 in the top 15) Jovan Rosa and Matt Cerda in the top 20, and Nelson Perez, Tony Thomas, Vince Watkins, Casey Lambert, Dan McDaniel, Ryan Searle, and Christopher Carpenter rounding out the top 30..... Others I could see making the list include Dylan Johnston, Ryan Rundle, Jesus Morelli, Jose Ascanio, Hung-Wen Chen, and Yohan Gonzalez.
  16. I think there's at least a fairly good possibility that Aramis moves to 1B after Lee is gone after the 2010 season. There's at least a chance Vitters could be ready to take over 3B by then, if he's still on the team obviously.
  17. I hate to burst your bubble, but if Harden is hurt he doesn't have much choice in the matter. Yeah, that's actually my point. He's got plenty of people(not counting the Cubs) looking out for him right now and advising him what is best for his future, since this is his contract year. If surgery was what was best for him, my honest guess is he would have had it. Because other people than the Cubs would have been pushing for it.
  18. Sorry, but I'm not getting my panties in a wad about this. Harden is literally playing for his big money contract next year. He's got a lot to lose by not pitching well this year. Prior was always protected by his guaranteed money while he was with us.
  19. Wittenmeyer's latest column has a blurb that Pie could be dealt as early as next week, with Hill likely next to go......If this is true, do we think we try to replenish the lower minors or get whatever we can get to help the major league roster? I would lean toward the former, since we don't have many spots left open. That said, if Pie is dealt, it seems like it could very well be the death blow to any Peavy talk, depending on what we get, or at least it would seem that way, wouldn't it?
  20. According to a Denver newspaper(no idea why they'd get this info first, but anyway) evidently Cedeno agreed to a 822,000K contract for 2009 today.
  21. While it's certainly disheartening to see the Cubs at 27, all it takes is a few guys(Jackson, Coleman, Shafer, Carpenter, Antigua, Suarez come to mind immediately for me) to step up this year and it changes things dramatically. I am surprised Jackson is ranked so low, but my guess is he skyrockets if he produces over a full season as he did last year during his short time in the system.
  22. If Peavy isn't dealt for whatever reason, I certainly don't want to see us add Wolf. I'd take Sheets, Lowe, or even Perez, but it looks like Lowe is too pricey and Sheets and Perez are barely(if at all) on our radar......Which brings up the question of who else could be dealt for? What about Bedard at this point? I doubt Seattle would want to move him without recouping MOST of what they gave up to get him, since it was just a year ago.....But, a package of Pie/Cedeno/Wuertz/ or Stevens and Castillo could interest them possibly? Would he fair better with a contender than he did last year? I think so anyway and if Peavy isn't an option, I think I'd explore this.
  23. The signings I didn't like whatsoever were Jacque, Rusch, Neifi, one of Howry or Eyre, and Burnitz.....Every other signing he's made, I was allright with. Maybe not necessarily the money involved on occasion, but the players have been fine.....If I'm missing someone, let me know. The trades that were bad as far as I'm concerned were the Pierre deal(although unfortunately, I wanted him and Furcal that year, but we way overpaid and I have since come to my senses and realize that Juan sucks) the Trachsel deal, and the Maddux deal for sure. I may be missing one or two here, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
  24. Hendry is probably in the top half of current GM's, if you ask me. His strengths: Rock solid reputation among other GM's, players, and agents. Has done a great job of keeping players here once he gets them and their contract is up. Usually at a discounted price. Has done well for the most part in making trades with small market teams in need of salary relief. Is almost always one of the more active GM's around. His weaknesses: Finds a model each year that he likes and won't deviate from it, to a fault. Seems to overload himself with high priced middle infielders and relief pitchers at times. Seems to hold onto certain players too long, destroying their trade value. Neutral: Big time risk-taker. He held onto the notion that Wod and Prior would get healthy for too long. And has since traded for Harden and signed Bradley, both huge injury risks, to say the least. But, both players can be phenomenal when healthy. The definition of a gunslinger as far as I'm concerned. Not sure whether this is a good or bad thing honestly. Part of me loves that he'll take the risks, but it obviously can look extremely bad for him in a short time, if things go south.......Basically, if Hendry plays poker, I see him as a guy who goes All-In every chance he gets.
  25. But, isn't the ownership situation supposed to be resolved within the next month as it is? I'm not sure why we would go after another SP, unless (A) Our ownership situation will NOT be resolved before the season starts...... or (B) We aren't confident we can actually get Peavy and are willing to forget about him in order to add a Lowe/Perez/Sheets type......Although, I can see us winding up with Randy Wolf instead of any of those guys, especially if Lou wants another lefty in the rotation.
