  1. This has basically been the equivalent of a struggling mom and pop store being bought out by a large and successful corporation. Hendry ran the FO with as few people as possible and now we've assembled an all star team. It's still sinking in for me really. Glad to see Wilken on board with everything.
  2. There's another pitcher out there I've totally forgotten about. Hisoshi Iwakuma. Oakland won his sole bidding rights last year with a posting fee of 19.1 mill. Without knowing anything about this guy, that's a pretty hefty posting fee. And they couldn't agree on terms, so either he's pretty damn good or he's severely overvaluing himself. But, he's out there and this time he's a 10 year vet, so no posting fee required.

    Dempster

I hope he walks and we keep Z. To me, the team that signs Dempster would be a team in the bottom half of the draft, but one that Demp isn't there highest priority signing. To where we get that team's second or maybe even their 3rd. But, it'd help if they also had a couple of comp picks they'd be receiving as well from their own FA's leaving. Basically, I guess I'm questioning whether or not a team would even be willing to give up a pick for him. I'm afraid he's declining and his age could hinder other teams really wanting him at a high price. If he were to go on the open market right now, what's he looking at? 3 for 30 is top end, right?
  4. Theo doesn't need a season to evaluate things. It's pretty clear he's well aware of what this team does poorly. He couched it in diplomatic terms but he's well aware of who is an idiot. He's not Dusty. If Theo decides he wants a manager like Maddon or even Tito, who may take a year off, then this would be considered an evaluation season. Because he can't just come out and say Quade is a lame duck, although I think it'd be kind of funny.
  5. I'd be shocked if the Yanks didn't pick up Swisher's option. I'd love to take a shot on Sizemore. Probably the absolute epitomy of risk/reward at it's best.
  6. I think a guy like Wilken could be an extremely valuable asset to Theo. Wilken is certainly an old school scout, but Theo uses that as much as he does the saber side. He knows how to blend it all together. And Wilken did a pretty damn solid job this past draft, when given the resources to make bigtime picks. I hope he sticks around, because he's one of the best old school guys around and if leaves, Theo's just going to go get a different one anyway.
  7. I don't want Quade back unless this IS going to be a season where Theo is evaluating everything. In this case, Theo would have to lay down the law and explain to him that he's got to play the rookies over the vets once things are decided. The way Quade handled Colvin after Fukudome was dealt last year was downright [expletive]. Coupled with how he's handled our pitching staff, Theo has his work cut out for him watching over this moron, if he's going to keep him on.
  8. In the end, I agree 5 for 80 or 85 would be solid for us, if it got us CJ. But, I just don't see the Yankees and Red Sox steering clear. I can see him getting 100 mill from someone. Maybe even a darkhorse team like the Nats giving it to him. If this winds up being the case, I hope we wait until next year to go after one of that group.
  9. Wainright's option's were exercised this week. He's there through 2013 now officially. Plus, the Yankees are trying to lock up CC at more money per year and an extra year or two. It's not looking like he'll hit the market now. As for Oswalt, I seem to remember he doesn't like the Cubs as well. Whether that means he wouldn't consider us is yet to be known obviously. But I kind of like him on a 2 year deal more than Wilson getting 100 mill from us as well. Mainly because of the dearth of pitching available next offseason.
  10. I may get castrated for saying it, but I'd rather go year to year with Soto. And that's knowing he's due for a good year again now. I want us to have another starting catcher by the time his arb years are up.
  11. If Theo wants a year to evaluate everything, before making any truly major moves, then so be it. Our farm system is going to take a major jump forward next year anyway, since we have tons of high upside guys in the lower levels to begin with. Then you add another year of very heavy spending to go with that and my honest guess is by the end of next season, we'll have a top 5 system. Which will then allow Theo to trade freely for the type players he sees as true needs for us by then. I want Fielder or Pujols as much as the next guy, but if Theo has an uneventful offseason in year 1, so be it. Let him get the whole inside of the organization revamped to what he wants.
  12. We just got Theo [expletive] Epstein. We just got Hoyer and McLeod as [expletive] lieutenants. This isn't possible. It's [expletive] probable.
  13. Oh, I'm not suggesting we non tender Baker. But if we traded him, I'm perfectly fine with it. Just to give LeMahieu a real shot and save us a mill or so, in the process. Which could obviously be put somewhere else. Not an earthshattering move here, but I'd rather give the time to DJ.
  14. Awesome news. Kind of hate this announcement was only made because of the rainout. I hope they get a bigtime welcome as well. Still though, did anyone actually think that when Hendry was fired, we'd wind up with freaking Theo AND this pair as well? This is a case where best case scenario was less than what actually happened.
  15. Bruce Chen isn't really what I was wanting to talk about, when creating this thread. If he's a tier 2 or a tier 3 or a tier 4, I don't really care. Honestly, I threw him in at 2 because I only looked at last season. If I had looked at his entire body of work, I'd have put him in the 3rd tier. My main point though is we could add a Vazquez and a Bedard on 1 or 2 year deals, along with one of the 1B and we're probably contending at the deadline, meaning we could add something substantial then and be pretty well off. Without spending tons of money on one of the top tier guys.
  16. I think Garza gets between 9 and 10 myself. Now's the time to try and get him locked into a 4 year deal. Baker and DeWitt can go away as far as I'm concerned. LeMahieu and Flaherty can take their places. Soto will probably get between 4 and 4.5. Hill? Non tender definitely. As for Wells? He's definitely a one year at a time guy. And if he has another season like this past one, he's non tendered next year as well.
  17. By monetary standards, we've got Sabathia, Wilson, and Darvish far and away being the big 3. Each of them are going to cost 75 million plus, in all likelihood. If we go after and get one of Pujols or Fielder, it's very likely we won't sign one of these guys as well. That said, I'm not even sure we should anyway. The second tier includes Erik Bedard, Mark Buehrle, Bruce Chen, Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda, Paul Maholm, Roy Oswalt, and Javier Vazquez. A 3rd tier of guys would include Mitch Talbot, Livan Hernandez, Freddy Garcia, Bartolo Colon, Jon Garland, Zack Duke, Joel Pineiro, Chris Capuano, Jeff Francis, Jason Marquis, and Aaron Cook. To me, if we could get one of the 1B and 2 of the 2nd tier guys, we're probably the favorites in our division heading into next season. I see no reason to sign a 3rd tier guy unless it's to be our 6th starter or something like that. Anyway, just curious as to how everyone wants to address the staff? Is it a higher priority than 1B? Or is it more like the way I'm thinking here?
  18. I think Reyes is the one bigtime FA this offseason we literally won't be linked to at all.
  19. What's being said in the Waddle and Silvy interview?
  20. Even though Callis is pretty sure nothing's going to change with the amateur draft, Selig appears to really want to cut out overslotting. If this actually happens, it's going to really put a crimp in Theo's plans. I hope like hell nothing changes, because I'm not sure what other avenues are really out there to improve the system, unless it's literally just throwing boatloads of cash at IFA's. Which I'm fine with, but it's not nearly as safe as the draft is. And it's not like the draft is safe to begin with.
  21. Personally, I think LaHair is going to suck. But, if Pujols and Fielder wind up elsewhere, using him as a stopgap isn't a bad idea. If he surprises, we've got a bright new shiny trade asset we didn't have before. If he fails, hopefully we've signed someone else who can finish out the year for us. Hell, it could be Aramis, with LeMahieu and Flaherty platooning at 3B.
  22. The Cards reported max so far was 9 years/$195 million right? No problem. While I definitely agree with that, what if he mulls it over, and the Cards up their offer some? If we target Pujols, I really want to see a big money, shorter term deal. I don't see the Cards competing with something like 6 for 180. I think the AAV of that gives Pujols the highest per year salary in history and it would take us off the hook for a couple of seasons where we'd probably be getting totally broken down Albert at that point. I've gone back and forth on which of those two to go after, but I think I've decided I'd prefer short term huge money thrown at Pujols, over an 8 for 200ish type deal thrown at Prince.
  23. I think we need to be very careful with Pujols, the more I read. He's going to most likely give the Cards last shot and I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere yesterday that it'll take a sizable difference for him to leave the Cards to begin with. Think the analogy was 20 mill more overall wouldn't get him out of St. Louis.
  24. According to the Moneyball article in SI, we had made preliminary calls on AGON, but when Theo got involved, he pushed and pushed until Hoyer conceded and got it finalized before the winter meetings began. First time I had actually thought of Hendry as lazy, to be honest. Looks like he misread the situation, at the very least.
  25. Any chance someone could post a full recap, saw a brief one a few pages ago. Sucks I have to watch this later. Payroll number not to be released, correct? While that sucks, I agree with it, to be honest.
