  1. If the Cubs see Cespedes as a guy with star potential, they should go after him and figure everything else out if they can land him. If Brett is in their longterm plans, then you just move one or the other over. As far as this guy possibly being the biggest FA acquisition for us this year, trades are out there as well. Personally, I'd love to acquire a big bat and a frontline arm without doling out a hundred million dollar contract.
  2. It seems conceivable the Marlins could get Reyes and Cespedes or Pujols. It looks they're going to try and acquire a pitcher through trade. Probably a very solid one, at that. They're going to most likely be very good next year. If they somehow got Reyes AND Pujols? Good lord.
  3. I'm really starting to think the Marlins will get one or the other of Pujols or Fielder.
  4. I guess it just adds to the rumors of Reyes to Florida.
  5. Alomar is interviewing today. Theo said in a conference call this process is in the 6th inning yesterday. With next week being the GM meetings, I don't know whether or not that'd be the time announce a new guy or not.
  6. They won two titles with Tito. If Theo wants to go down the same road again, I don't think we should question it.
  7. The best and only argument I guess I would really need for Francona is if Theo thinks enough of him to rehire him, then it's going to be good enough for me in the end.
  8. My requirements for trading Z would either be getting at least half his salary paid, in this case I wouldn't expect much of anything in return or if we pay most or all of his contract, then I'd expect 2 bottom half top 10 prospects from that team's system. If neither of these scenarios develop, then keep him and expect a decent 3 or solid 4 starter's production.
  9. As cool as it'd be if we could get Tito, I actually think I'm firmly backing Maddux at this point and it's not even just because of the possibility he could bring Greg in as his pitching coach, although that doesn't exactly hurt either.
  10. I'm pretty sure the same article said execs feel Fielder will get 7 years at 22 or 23 per. Even said NL teams may not go longer than 5 years on him. Personally, if this is true and I could definitively sign Fielder at 7 for 161 mill, I'd jump on it, even before Pujols is off the board.
  11. Iwakuma is coming over as well, isn't he?
  12. 6 years for either of them? I'd certainly prefer that as well, but I think Fielder is a shoo in to get 8. I can possibly see Pujols take a shorter deal, especially if it puts him as the highest per year average ever. That said, at Fielder's age, I think he'd be just fine through 6 years probably anyway. So, I have no issue going 8 for him. Pujols? I think after 6, we'll see a substantial drop off, so if we gave him 10, it'll be a situation where the system is going to have to pick up the slack somewhat to offset it. That said, I feel confident that it will, so again, while not nearly ideal, I'd still give him the deal, because you're still getting 5 or 6 excellent years out of him, better than Fielder's upside. So,I'd take the risk and be confident that the system picks up the slack later in the deal. But, to me, if either of these guys helped us to a single championship, then it's worth overpaying for.
  13. That perfect 26 to 28 year old free agent isn't hitting the market anymore. Teams are locking their guys up earlier and earlier. And it's just going to get worse. Signing a Pujols or Fielder should give the Cubs plenty of time to get pieces around them in time to build around them while they're still really, really good players. There's almost no way we won't technically overpay for someone like this, but if it gives us even a true 4 year window where we're contenders and getting huge production out of them, then it's worth it as far as I'm concerned.
  14. I'm pretty sure Maddux is gonna be our guy.
  15. I could have went with an opposite type scenario, where we get one of Fielder or Pujols, but then I would have went with lesser pitching. I chose this way, because as far as upside goes, you'd be getting the best FA starter on the market, overpaying because I see us having to do so, if we are to land him. We'd also be getting a guy who also has "ace" possibilities in Liriano, although a guy with definite risk involved. Cespedes is an unknown, but could conceivably be a superstar. Yeah, 1B is still a hole, but I don't expect all of our holes to be addressed in one offseason to the point where they're filled longterm either. But, other than Wilson, no contract was given out here that could severely damage the team either. And there's enough upside here that this could conceivably be an extremely good team if things fall right.
  16. Here's the thing with Z and what Theo has to figure out: he's an average starter who's losing velo and certainly has some issues that will scare some teams off. He's also being paid as a 1 starter. Even if we paid his entire deal, there's no way a team is giving up a top 100ish prospect or a key major league piece for him. Not happening. We'd either get a couple of high upside guys who have had problems or some other high salary that's basically a switch of scenery deal everyone hopes works out. If he were a FA right now, what would he get on the open market? Maybe 2 or 3 years at between 8 and 10 mill per? Maybe even a tad less? Hell, he may would have to sign a one year, make good deal to try and bring his value back up even. So, is it worth it to trade him and create another hole in the rotation as well? In the end, I really doubt it personally. Keep him and see if he pitches better since it's his walk year. If so and we aren't contending, we'd get more at the deadline than we would right now anyway.
  17. If you sign a big ticket guy to an 8 or 10 year deal, I'm not sure why having one guy under contract at that point is THAT big of a deal. In signing these guys, you kind of go in knowing the back ends of these deals are going to be iffy, at the absolute best. Which is why we're going to concentrate so much effort into building from within. There's absolutely no guarantee that we'll have been producing a tremendous pipeline of high upside, superstar type talent, but in spending much more, the chances are certainly enhanced. It's not ideal to give out more than one of those type deals, but you're looking at something so far in advance that taking a risk like this right now, shouldn't register to what our team looks like a decade in the future.
  18. Morrison isn't getting dealt this offseason, unless it's for Shields this offseason, according to a few guys today.
  19. I read a blurb yesterday the Royals are very comfortable with Butler at DH and he's going no where anytime soon.
  20. I don't think this is the right fit. Doubt Z waives his NTC to go there. But, if one GM thinks this way about him, it's a relatively decent chance another one does as well. Again, if you move him, Theo is going to look at potential compensation after this year as well. If he's a Type B FA, you have to look at the pick you could acquire by offering him arb. And if he winds up as a B, then it actually means he's had a solid enough season to where we wouldnSt be worried about him accepting arb either. He's still young enough to where some team could offer him a 3 or 4 year deal. Of course, he'd also have to behave himself, which is an iffy proposition. It's cool to know there may be a market for him, but I think we're going to need a team a little closer to contention to show interest before I think it's viable to deal him, especially since he does have value to us as a middle of the rotation guy with upside to still be more if things went correctly.
  21. I think it's a nice way of saying Boston's ownership is a joke and he doesn't want to work in that environment. Exactly. He's doing damage control in a very professional way. Not even necessary for him to do either, but I don't think he wants anything to do with an organization where the very best part of it just left to go the place where he wants to begin his managerial career.
  22. To file in the "scrappy guys are good teammates and know what's going on" file, Eckstein says Pujols will stay if Oquendo is named manager. So here's to them being bowled over by Francona today.........
  23. I may actually agree with that. But there is a possibility that he gains SOME power, by moving away from Dodger Stadium. My main thing though, was he's an excellent defensive 1B and I think that will entice us, in this case. It's his llast year of arb and he may wind up as a Type B and Theo could look ahead at the additional pick possibility.
  24. Are we talking -06-'08 DeRosa or the rest of his career? He'll have those years, but not until he's in his late 20's, is my guess. For a few years, I'd expect more of a ,255/.300/.425 line.
  25. I honestly think it's a very nice way to say he wants to be manager of the Cubs and the decision to hire him has mostly already been made.
