  1. Wasn't the story something like the Angels offered him a 6 year 100 million dollar deal at midnight and he woke up the next morning and told Kinzer to get it done with Hendry. I think they may have even negotiated during church or something.
  2. I was hoping we'd keep him. But I read something that said he may be able to get 4 or 5 years somewhere. If that's the case, I'm glad we're not keeping him. Thanks for everything Rammy, you've been a hell of a Cub.
  3. Holy crap. Bodog has the Cubs as 7-4 favorites with Pujols. Cards are 2-1.
  4. Strasburg or Harper, even though he's not made it up yet?
  5. I looked at Longoria's stats, I may recant on him. Like I said, not sure whether I would trade him for Posey or Heyward, possible though. I like Pineda a lot. How about David Price? He's a possibility for sure.
  6. I would definitely trade Starlin for Kershaw. And I could possibly be talked into trading him for Heyward or Posey. Longoria? Yeah. Probably Pineda. At any rate, I'd only deal him for guys under control for at least 3 more years and at a solid discount. Hell, maybe I better rethink Kershaw, since he's going to get really expensive really quickly himself.
  7. I can get behind a LeMahieu and Flaherty platoon at 3rd, by the way. Same with either Francis or Chen instead of Young. I'm thinking of this as a 6th starter with Garza/Dempster/Z/Wells as the front 4, maybe Shark can beat out Wells. I'd really like to address higher end pitching much more as well, but I don't see us doling out 2 bigtime contracts during Theo's first year in charge. Plus, next year is much more likely to have a better selection of top shelf guys out there for us to nab one. If we could somehow get Oswalt on a 2 year deal for 24, with only 8 on year 1, I'd be very happy. I'd be OK with adding Edwin Jackson on a 3 or 4 year deal around 12 mill per, based on age and potential upside, but I'd want a much better pitching coach and also a trade of Z that saves us about half his deal somehow. That said, I'm more interested in adding the big bat this year at the expense of a bigtime pitcher, if it actually is an either/or situation right now. And that's knowing we need bigtime pitching if we're going to make serious waves next year. Maybe we can add one at the deadline somehow with this squad, if things go right enough with some of the upside guys.......
  8. Our payroll is basically right at 100 mill right now, counting Wood coming back around 2 mill. I'm not counting Baker and DeWitt in there either, think they could be dealt. Anyway, with no trades at all involving us adding something substantial, how about this plan: sign Fielder for 8 years and 172 mill. 14, 18, 22, 22, and 24 for each of the last 4 years. Sign Sizemore for one year and 6 mill, with incentives to where he could reach 14 mill, if he has a season from his past. Sign Kouzmanoff for 3rd at around 1 or 2 mill. Add Bedard at 8 mill, with incentives and an option year that vests with solid production at 12 or 14 mill. Add Chris Young on a make good deal as well. Payroll would basically be around 135ish. No longterm commitments other than Prince. But some upside guys, that if they did hit, we could be really good and we're still in position to be serious players next year in FA. Thoughts?
  9. There's some upside here and Theo is probably pretty familiar with him. Personally though, he'd have to come really cheap to get me interested. But he is a guy who's probably wanting a one year deal to try and grab another big deal if he does well.
  10. Yeah I can see how it could be taken either way, but I did mean Fielder seems much more likely to possibly be a target for us than Pujols. That said, if Pujols is willing to take a llarge 6 year deal, I'm not so sure I wouldn't rather have that than a possible 8 year deal for Fielder. But, it's cool as hell to have a bunch of number crunchers here now to analyze the cost factor vs. production angle for us over the course of proposed terms of a deal.
  11. True, but it also takes the Yankees away from some of these other guys as well. I doubt they'll be huge players for Wilson now personally. Probably not Darvish either. Obviously, they have money to spend other teams don't have. But almost 25 mill per for CC should help limit them somewhat, if you ask me.
  12. I'm kind of glad we missed a shot here. Wilson would come much cheaper and may be just as good or better.
  13. I want Cashner in the rotation as much as anyone on this board, but I actually hope he's in the pen next year, then given another shot in 2013. Too worried about his arm falling off, due to too many innings next year.
  14. In a perfect world, you make a quick strike on Fielder, so you can offer arb to Pena without thinking he'd accept. Of course, with Boras as Fielder's agent, I'll be shocked if he doesn't wait on Pujols to sign first.
  15. Maybe so. But Fielder fits the whole "Don't want to pay for past production" mold to a tee age-wise.
  16. Greinke is filthy. But I'm worried about how he'd handle a major market as well. But, I'd take a shot and hope for the best here. As long as the circus like atmosphere we've had in the past has been cleaned up, I think we could still get a ton out of him.
  17. I love this. Probably the first difference brtween the Theo regime and Hendry. Saving 600,000 by doing this is the right thing to do. I honestly think Jim would have just gave him his option, not really caring about the small amount of cash that could be used elsewhere.
  18. Theo kind of made a comment as well that made me think this. Something in his quote about the Cubs finally getting it. Made it sound like spending the cash was great, but he didn't sound enthused about the players either. Or at least didn't let on that he was. Oh well, we definitely did get some high upside guys this year.
  19. I'm not sure anyone wants Pena on anything other than a one year deal.
  20. Oh and I'm not trading Castro straight up honestly. Monetary reasons.
  21. I would do Brett, McNutt, Vitters, Cashner, and Barney for him. And not think twice. Not sure that would get it done though.
  22. If we keep Byrd and he winds up as a Type A next year, I seriously doubt a team would even be willing to give up their 2nd rounder to acquire him. Much less their 1st. We'd probably wind up scared to offer him arb, for fear he accepts. Not worried about Theo and Jed navigating through that though, they'll make the right call. But, the point about Grady going somewhere he can play everyday at is a very good one. If his meds check out, then trading Byrd before you even go after him could very well be a prerequisite to acquiring him. As far as Soriano goes, I'm just not ready to eat that much cash yet.
  23. I'm not saying he'll get that, because he won't. But, if he's willing to take a 6 year deal, he's definitely going to make more than AROD on a per year basis. 40 is too much, but I wouldn't be upset if we went to 33 or 35 per honestly.
  24. Yes. Bring him in as a 4th OFer. If Brett struggles, put him in. If he looks good and so does Brett, then trade Byrd. Not sure exactly how high the upside is at this point, but it's worth a one year flyer, if you ask me. Give him somewhere between 6 and 8 guaranteed with incentives that could push it up a ton. Always was a fan of his and I'd love to see him bounce back.
  25. I want Sizemore. Trade Byrd, if necessary. I'm not sure it's even necessary though. Sign Grady as the 4th OFer and let things sort themselves out.if Brett struggles, that's who he replaces. If Grady looks like he's back, then trade Byrd to make room for him. He's going to want a one year deal anyway, so I really hope he's on our radar now.
