  1. Szczur has ran up against a wall. He's went directly from football to baseball with very little break at all and he's never even played this long of a baseball season to begin with. Basically, I'm not going to worry about him right now. The power he's flashed this year has made me consider this year a success for him. Hopefully he does well in Daytona early next year and gets the midseason bump to Tennessee.
  2. 12 home games left. 3 each with Cincy, Pitt, Houston, and Milwaukee. 16 road games left with 4 against Cincy and 3 each with the Cards, Giants, Mets, and Pads. Hopefully we don't play ourselves out of a higher pick again.
  3. I think I remember an article a few weeks ago with a Quade quote basically saying not to expect Brett getting a callup.
  4. WGW, no Baez, Maples, or Vogelbach? As far as Lake goes, I recognize the immense potential, but until he puts up that kind of line for more than a month, I'll have a really hard time putting him high on a list due to the extremely high bust factor.
  5. At this point, with the names being mentioned, I'm going to be completely fine with anyone not named Coletti or Byrnes. And even Byrnes COULD wind up OK, I guess.
  6. His day is done as he was lifted for a pinch runner. Game is tied at 15 in the 10th.
  7. The Billy Beane disciples are probably a better fit for us than Beabe himself is anyway. Other than getting lucky with his original group of young pitching, he hasn't done a whole bunch since. I'd take Friedman, Cashman, Theo and probably even some of the Hahn's and Cherington's of the world over him and not lose any sleep over it.
  8. Keith Law says the wind inexplicably started blowing out at 100 mph right when Matt was at the plate. Both times. So again, nothing to see here. Keith is always right, just ask him.
  9. I guess Friedman is my absolute favorite out of these guys but Cashman is a close second since he has experience operating on a larger budget. Much of what Friedman has turned into an artform could be gone soon with draft pick compensation being one of the main agendas for the next CBA.
  10. Very well aware Candelario has yet to show us anything over here yet. My guess is he'll be somewhere in the 20 to 25 range when BA comes out with their top 30. I'm putting him this high because of the plate discipline and the power potential combo along with what looks to be at least a plus hit tool as well. Badler thinks he's the best prospect in the DSL and considering how our system is most likely muddled after the top 4 anyway, I'm going with perceived upside with my list. His bonus doesn't mean anything to me, nor was it anything ridiculously eye opening anyway. 500k is nice but it doesn't automatically get you a spot either. If Acosta or Malave or marcano don't thoroughly dominate the DSL next year then they won't make my list next year either. On the other hand I look at what Candelario has done this year as one of the biggest stories throughout the Cubs minors this year.
  11. We do not know how long Theo's contract is with the Red Sox. I'd think that it'd be about the best thing a GM could possibly ever accomplish if he led both the Red Sox AND the Cubs to their first titles in forever. There' been some talk as to who all could possibly be interested in this gig, maybe even a few surprises. Let the Red Sox promote Cherington and give Theo enough cash to where the Red Sox are OK with him leaving. Yeah, dream scenario for sure, but it may not be THAT outlandish to at least bring it up as an outside possibility.
  12. 1 B Jackson 2 Baez 3 Szczur 4 McNutt 5 Maples 6 Vitters 7 Ha 8 Candelario 9 Vogelbach 10 Struck 11 LeMahieu 12 Antigua 13 Rhee 14 Whitenack 15 Golden 16 Dolis 17 Hernandez 18 Beeler 19 Watkins 20 Beliveau 21 Flaherty 22 Wells 23 Castillo 24 Dunston Jr 25 DeVoss 26 M Gonzalez 27 Kurcz 28 Rusin 29 Amaya 30 Rosario I figure I'm higher on LeMahieu than everyone and probably lower on Castillo than most. Could have easily put Zych and Scott near the bottom, just didn't. Could be way off on Antigua but he really has impressed me in Daytona.
  13. DePo evidently rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way. Maybe it was because he was younger and all but I don't really think he'll ever get another shot at GM. Hahn is very sabermetrically inclined and has an excellent rep, which was all I was going on, when mentioning him as a guy I'd be in favor of.
  14. Ricketts just put a true stamp down on the organization. Hendry did as well as he could and he certainly was a great guy but this was necessary. Can not wait to see who we get. Think Ricketts mentioned there were plenty of candidates that are currently assistants right now. Could temper some Friedman talk or anyone else currently a GM. Maybe Hahn is our guy............
  15. If we surround Z with an influx of talent next year then I think he is probably worth keeping around. If we are winning then I think he would be on his best behavior. Also its a contract year for him and he could conceivably have a year where he's back to his almost dominant self. The key would then be to resist the notion of resigning him at that stage. On the other hand though is the possibility we decide to go with a semi youth movement geared more to the following season. If this winds up being the case then cutting ties with him makes more sense if you are worried about him becoming a bad influence on some of the youngsters.
  16. Speechless. Ricketts made this draft class signing period like Christmas morning. Unreal showing and Jacquez was basically the only guy we missed out on. Zimmer maybe. But to spend 12 mill on the class was flat out great. I think our system is well on the way to being a top 5 system in all of baseball within 2 or 3 years and at this point I could see it staying there too. Definitely on board with Ricketts now. Questioned his motives before but this has turned me into a believer for sure.
  17. This has been a phenomenal showing this year thru international signees. And who is to say we are even done yet. Reports say we are interested in that Garcia guy it looked like we may draft and there are still more guys unsigned from Central America too. Needless to say Ricketts has put his money where his mouth is.
  18. Absolutely LOVE the Shoulders signing. IMO, he's got the second most power in the system now(after Vogelbach, assuming he signs) Figure this means we're not getting Gretzky, but I wanted Shoulders more anyway. As for anyone questioning his signing bonus? Who cares, as long as it doesn't affect us signing others as well. Not to mention, he was probably a 10th round talent or better, just fell due to signability. I thought I saw a Jacquez tweet yesterday that made me think he wants to sign. Just some sort of tweeting back and forth between him and Dunston. Without looking at the list, I want these guys in the fold and figure we get them: Baez, Vogelbach, Zych, and Scott. None of which I'm worried about losing(assuming that guy who reported Scott finally signed is correct anyway) If we can get those 4 and also get Dunston, Maples, Jacquez, Urban, and maybe Zimmer, we'll have had an absolutely unreal draft. Not sure what to expect out of that group, but definitely think we'll get 3 or maybe even more of them. With Maples being the guy I obviously want the most.
  19. Per BA, 15th rounder C Justin Marra has signed.
  20. There's still enough cash out there to resign Forte, sign Hayden, sign Edwards, and Jacob Bell too. If this were to be done, we'd have had a hell of a FA period honestly. Don't get me wrong though, I expect none of this to happen, other than a severely frontloaded Forte deal(ala Tait a few years back, to give us eventual cap room, that we won't use the way it should be). The McCaskey's are happy with fielding a really good team every once in a while basically. I hate the fact that we're a couple of players away from being elite and we've gone cheap. But, I totally expected it, because we had a very good year last season. And as long as the unrest only gets SO BIG with the Bears, they're content to put out very average squads for the most part.
  21. RHP. Cuban defector with Cabezas. All I got. Put this in IFA thread as well.
  22. Yoanner Negrin was signed this week by the Cubs, according to BA. He defected with Cabezas evidently and is a RHP. Nothing else on him. No idea if this is who is being congratulated or not from LA Sports Management.
  23. Use that money on an overslot guy from the draft. Yep, throw whatever saved directly into the draft budget hopefully.
  24. I hope Kosuke helps them out, never had anything against the Indians. As for the return, if we save a little cash and it opens up a spot to play Brett(or even Colvin for the rest of this year) I'm OK with it. Didn't expect much of a return whatsoever.
  25. LA Sports Management announced today that one of their clients had signed with the Cubs and congratulated them in Cuban. One of the PSD guys asked them who it was and they said they would announce it on August 8th if it hadn't been broken by someone before then. No clue who it could be, but I guess it could be that Garcia Speck guy we had been rumored with during the draft......
