  1. According to the guy on PSD who appears to have contacts, Zych wants second round money and Scott had a prearranged deal with the Cubs, but he reneged and wants more money now. Sounded confident Zych will be in the fold, but certainly less so with Scott. Great news on Jensen for sure. The more I read the more intrigued I became. Another rumor from this guy is we have a Trevor Bauer-esque type offer out there for that Garcia Speck guy we had been rumored to be drafting in the first round. Of course, there are other teams in on him as well(including the Yankees). Nevertheless, what we're trying to do with all aspects of the farm system is definitely encouraging.
  2. Don't we think Rasmus may cost us just a teeny, tiny bit more than it would anyone else? I'll guarantee he's not worth what it'd take to get the Cards to trade him to us.
  3. Good lord, I hope this is true. :D I really don't like having my hopes up like this, but damn.......This would be phenomenal. I didn't realize Urban was a top 10 round talent either, but his tweets certainly indicate he wants to be a Cub. He even tweets back and forth with Dunston some, which is cool to see. On PSD, someone mentioned we had increased our offer to Jensen as well. Fingers crossed on all these guys for sure. Wow, make it happen.
  4. All of this stuff is kind of a roller coaster from start to start with our pitching prospects(since very few of them have shown consistency this year) but I think I'm back on board with Antigua being our best lefty starting prospect at this point. I have no clue as to why he struggled in Peoria this year, but he's definitely worked it out in Daytona. I know he doesn't have a prototypical build for a starter, but I'd love to hear some velo readings on him now. If he's throwing low 90's, he could be what we're wanting Kirk to be.
  5. I'm not scared about Baez. Just don't see any reason that's popped up to be. If we get 9 of our top 10, missing Dugas, I'll be extremely happy. Scott had said something to the affect he'll be signing at some point and he's a guy that has some upside as well. To turn this from a good draft(and getting 9 of the top 10 would be, if you ask me, based on who we took) to a GREAT draft, we've gotta get Dunston(looking good for now) and Maples(at least we're trying). Do those 2 things and we've probably gotten a top 5 draft in a year where we had zero extra picks.
  6. Brett 0-5 with 3K's. Gotta get him going, because I really want to see him in Chicago starting and leading off by mid August somehow, if possible.
  7. I may get flamed for saying this, but I'd rather spend in this area in some ways than on the major league roster at this point. With the way things are going, with teams locking in their best guys for an extra couple of years, it's making it very hard to find bigtime FA's who are going to be in their prime for most of the contract they're going to wind up getting. You don't have to have a 135 mill major league payroll to consistently be a true contender, if you ask me. If it takes dropping the major league payroll down to 120ish or so, but have the ability to consistently spend bigtime thru the draft and IFA, then I'm actually all for it. The pipeline would be continuous and while you'd have to pay big money to keep some guys obviously, you'd also consistently have the cheap production needed to go around it at all times as well. In a perfect world too, you wouldn't be shelling out humongous money on volatile FA pitching either. You could home grow it and always have more on the way up as well.
  8. Right around the time we heard DeVoss was signing or had signed and it hadn't been reported yet, there was a blurb(can't remember from who) that said Baez was expected in shortly or something to that affect. It's pretty easy to get excited with all this stuff going on right now. I just want to see Maples here. Getting him AND Dunston would be phenomenal. Craig, I think I'm going to disagree with you on how much of an overslot I expect Dunston to be. I think he'll get a mill personally. (not saying I see him being worth THAT much either) But, he does have some very nice upside and whatever amount we can get him to agree to, I'm going to be happy about it, since it's a change of philosophy, at the very least.
  9. I'd say there are at least a handful of other guys worth paying attention to and who are not just "playing out the string." Ramirez, Soto, Dempster, Zambrano, Garza and Wells. Those guys have been mostly good, except for Wells (who needs to bounce back to at least a level of competence). Soto struggled early but has been pretty good since May despite the occasional setback. Another group may be nothings special to watch or hope for, but Byrd and Pena hardly look "dead ass". The team is no good, but let's not pretend it's about guys just not trying. Yeah, I should clarify that somewhat. I didn't mean to insinuate that we had nobody else on the team that's not worth following. Just that we basically already know what these other guys are capable of. I'd even add Pena to your list, but I think I'm very close to the point where I may take Wells off soon. Just don't know whether or not he'll have another season like his first one(or maybe even his second one, for that matter). Nothing to back it up either, just a gut feeling. On the other hand, I hold out hope Garza turns into a bonafide ace and if not, I definitely think he's an extremely strong 2 on a good team.
  10. Sorry for no link, computer is running slow as hell.......But Tony Gwynn said Gretzky signed on Monday evidently.......
  11. This season has morphed directly into watching the minors closely and pulling for some serious overslots with the draft picks. Literally, the ONLY thing worth paying attention to on the major league level IS Castro. And if Quade wants to pile on him(and Barney, for that matter) get him out now. It's bad enough that these young guys are stuck with this dead ass team anyway with a bunch of guys who are just playing out the string. Quade is managing for his life right now, while he should be instructing these guys much more constructively than he is. No one truly thought of us as a contender this year, so I would have been happy just to see THAT side of Quade. But, he can't even do that, so get rid of his ass pronto.
  12. I'll be very surprised if Quade is back next year at this point.
  13. Because they have $60 million dollars coming off the books. I'm not saying Aramis saves the season, but man, it's not like they'll be hurting for money, especially if they miss out on Prince and Pujols. To me, that's exactly why NOT to spend. The FA class after those 2 guys is weak and that's putting it mildly. I'd rather exercise restraint, so we don't get saddled with any bad deals. Sign as many one year deals as possible, to fill in holes and all, but this class of FA doesn't inspire confidence and I'm not sure we've got the ammo right now to make more than one really solid trade either.
  14. I don't see how you qualify a top 100ish type prospect as VERY useful. And your plan if we miss out on Fielder and Pujols is to just try and be as terrible as possible? To me, a top 100ish type guy is very useful because he can conceivably be a big help to the major league team, or he's damn good currency to use as part of a major trade that nets us something else over the offseason. As for being terrible, if we miss out on the 1B, yeah, we probably will be, in all likelihood. So, why waste more money on Aramis that could just as easily be spent on a stop gap AND towards the minors? I'm sorry, but I don't think fans are going to care all that much if we win 73 games with Aramis or 65 without him, in the grand scheme of things. The only reason to keep him, in my opinion under this scenario, would be if we truly are scared attendance is going to take a massive dive. Aramis wouldn't be the sole reason attendance would drop obviously, but combined with high as hell ticket prices, losing out on the 1B derby, having a horrible 2011 and other factors too, I at least can see why we should worry about this.
  15. Pitching is either going to get us back into being a contender or not, if you ask me. If we don't add a front of the rotation pitcher this offseason, even if we added Fielder or Pujols AND kept Aramis, I wouldn't like our chances personally. Yeah, we'd be contenders for the weak ass division and yeah, anything can happen in the playoffs, but I wouldn't be thinking we're truly a serious contender, unless something weird happened. Is it worth a shot though? Yeah, of course it is. Get there and hope for the best basically........Even if you think we're overmatched by Philly and the Braves, anything can and often does, in short series. My point is this, I guess: Trade Aramis now(if he'll let us) IF it brings us back something VERY useful. A young player who'll contribute next year at a cheap salary or a top 100ish type prospect. If we can't get that for him, decline his option, offer him arb, and see how the 1B bonanza plays out. We get one of those guys, go ahead and re-sign Aramis and hope a bigtime pitcher comes available at the deadline. If we miss out on 1B, then let Aramis walk and take whatever comp pick we can get(assuming he gets us one)
  16. FWIW, Morel pitched tonight(not all that well, not horrible though) for DSL1. If he's suspended, I guess it hasn't started yet. DeVoss is 0-1 with 4 runs scored and 4 steals for Boise. My guess is he's moved up rather quickly to Peoria.
  17. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-110716-mlb-whispers,0,4634980.story Inside this story about Vogelbach being close to signing is an extremely interesting tidbit saying the Cubs will almost certainly talk to Pat Gillick about coming on board. He evidently doesn't want a GM job, but I can't see how adding him to the organization, maybe as president of baseball ops or something, could possibly be a bad thing.
  18. Do we not have a Gordon Gecko SOMEWHERE in Hendry's ear saying this is just another dog with different fleas? I want to see Jay Jackson in the 5th spot soon. Unless his velo hasn't come back. Hell, I may want him there even if it hasn't.
  19. Yomar Morel, a 17 year old who just pitched 4.1 innings of no-hit ball down in the DSL just got hit with a 50 gamer as well.
  20. Shoulders is kidding himself if he thinks he's getting anywhere near that kind of money. Also, I don't really see intrigue with Gretzky, at least not for the type of money he'd likely require. Shoulders is a big kid with serious power, so it's conceivable he could work himself into a spot where he's at least capable of receiving somewhat close to that kind of cash. As far as Gretzky goes, I don't really disagree with you, he's one of the last guys I'd pick on this list probably, I just wanted to get us to 30 and I was naming them in draft order, not in order of my preference. I'd take Shoulders over him myself, with all things being equal.
  21. Before I decide to get halfway excited about Jay again(and I really want to) I really want to hear some sort of velo readings on him: Is he still throwing mid-80's or has he amped back up into the low 90's, which was where he's been the vast majority of his minor league career. If it's the latter, I'll go ahead and say I hope he's next in line for that very prolific 5th spot in our rotation, that's been so awesome for us all season long.......
  22. By the way, we've got 18 signees so far. We usually wind up with around 30, so if that winds up as the magic number, here's my wish list for the final 12: Baez, Vogelbach, Zych, Scott, Gretzky, Schlect, Dunston, Maples, Shoulders, Jensen, Richardson, and Jacquez......Couple of notes from PSD's guy are we're 600,000 apart with Shoulders. As a guy who was picked where he was, we may be content with not trying too hard with him, especially with Vogelbach and Gretzky ahead of him in the Cubs' minds. On a more positive note though, supposedly we're making solid progress with Dunston.
  23. Yeah, I'm shocked Rosario was signed for that amount. Cool to get someone in cheap, especially if it helps us out later on with some overslots.
  24. http://www.baseball-fever.com/archive/index.php/t-101808.html This guy is the one who broke the Malave signing and he has a decent writeup in a bunch of pitchers that have yet to be signed at the bottom of his page. It'd be great if we could find a way to snag one or two somehow....... :D
  25. There's just not a lot known about Rosario. But, he's 17, has good pop and a good arm. I'm definitely glad he signed. Not really surprised DuVall got that kind of cash, as he's a soph. Read on PSD from a guy who's supposedly plugged in, that Maples and the Cubs are waiting to see how he's doing this summer before a decision is made, but the Cubs are at 1.85 and he's at 2.2, with the general idea that 2 mill gets him here. Not sure whether or not this guy is THAT plugged in, but he definitely knows his stuff. Jacquez has struggled this summer to date, 6.20 ERA in 24 innings against college guys with bad control, so no idea what's going on with him right now. Baseball America has Elias as signed now as well, by the way. Dunston was 50/50 a while back, so at the very least, we're trying to make this a GREAT class and that's really all we can ask. But, I'm definitely getting excited at the prospects of it becoming just that.......
