  1. As long as Cuban owns the Mavs, I'd put them ahead of the Clips on your list. Boston would be much higher for me as well, the tradition and market would dwarf the fans crap for me.
  2. It's hard to get comps on Soler. He doesn't have stats to look at, he didn't play in Cuba's best league, and scouts have been pretty tight lipped on him. For all the hype around him, to my knowledge, there's only ONE picture of him even available and no video whatsoever. At 6'3 and 205, at his age, I see why they think he'd be best suited for RF, based on frame, and a bigtine arm. Mondesi HAS been brought up at some point, but with as little as truly known about him, I think everything seems like a shot in the dark. As much as I want him added to our team, I'll admit that it's a bigtime risk. Probably more of one than Cespedes actually, if it weren't for the difference in money.
  3. To me, Cardenas has slightly more upside than Dewitt does. Of course, Dewitt actually has none. I'm willing to give Cardenas a shot, he may be a decent bat anyway. A pretty inconsequential move, in the end, that at best, gives us a decent backup middle infield bat. There is no downside, as far as I'm concerned, because Dewitt sucked.
  4. It was a long time ago, probably as far back as November, because I had hopes we'd get one of these guys during the Winter Meetings. It was some guy on Twitter, one of the typical guys, Heyman, Rosenthal, Knobler, Olney, Stark, Passan, Brown, etc.
  5. Damn, haven't all those guys been here at the same time? Hell, I thought some of them have had arguments with each other. Guess I'm wrong. Oh well, I hope Cespedes gets his tour this week somehow and makes his decision. On the other hand, I really hope Soler isn't far behind in this process(heard a week or so originally, but who knows now if that's changed). He needs to be in minor league camp and available to play an entire season himself. Maybe moreso than Cespedes, since he's much further away from the majors.
  6. I'm pretty sure there was a sign and trade involving Deng that could have gotten us the 3rd guy. May have had another piece or two involved and we would have been signing vet minimum guys to fill out the roster, but I do think there was a way to do it. Maybe they missed max deals by a mill or so, can't remember, but the bottom line is they chose to play elsewhere, with a lesser supporting cast over playing for us.
  7. I think there was a way last year that Lebron, Wade, and Bosh ALL could have wound up in Chicago, with Rose and Noah. At the very least, we know it was possible for any 2 of the 3 to do it. Why didn't it happen? We'll never know, but they chose to play in Miami with no help, over joining a team that was much better, with them on it, than what they got themselves into. Was it because they're stupid? Or was it because they just didn't want to play in Chicago? I hate saying it, but my guess is the latter. And now, Howard's probably going to go down the same path. We can try and win by playing "team" basketball all we want, but it's very likely that what we're going to do, is be the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavs, New York Knicks type of excellent teams that never won it all. Bitch about SSR trolling about this if you want, but he's right. There's a reason these guys aren't coming here. And if we can't change that, it's likely we continue to be damn good, but not great.
  8. AZPhil explained it. Here's the deal: if he's put on outright waivers, the claiming team pays 20,000 and gets Dewitt at his 1.1 mill salary. He can refuse to be outrighted to the minors and become a FA immediately. In this case, Cubs owe him nothing. He can also dealy this until after 2012, in which he'd be paid his 1.1 mill salary at the minor league split level(if his contract has this provision). He would lose the ability to become a FA at the end of 2012, if he's added back to the 40 man at any point during the season. He would then be arb eligible for the 3rd time. If we release him, we owe him his full salary, minus whatever a team that signs him is willing to pay(probably a minor league deal, so we'd owe it all) if we release him and he DOES have a split deal, then we owe him 183,000, one sixth his salary. Most arb eligible players do NOT sign split contracts like this, but since Dewitt was a legit non tender candidate, it's very possible we signed him to one.
  9. If it was a big league deal, then we likely are on the hook. Completely forgot about that. I doubt anyone will claim him because if there was any interest we likely would have traded him. Anyone with any interest would likely wait until he's a free agent if he makes it through waivers and get him for cheaper. We can still trade him after DFAing him. We'd owe him 1/6 of the contract if we outright release him You have any idea what happens if we throw him in AAA? Does he keep his same contract? Or does he get some sort of minor league split?
  10. Not sure why we even tendered Dewitt a contract honestly. I guess it all comes full circle, in a way. I would have added Flaherty and cut Dewitt. Now, we add a different utility type without a real position. And Dewitt gets cut. I kind of like Cardenas, but his glove is pretty bad, right? Are we on the hook for Dewitt's 1.1, if he's not claimed?
  11. I just went over to Orioles Hangout and that place is in crisis lockdown mode. It would suck to be a fan of Baltimore though. Toughest division in baseball, worst owner in baseball probably, they kill every pitcher they draft, they change directions all the time.......Personally, I don't know why they wouldn't keep Guthrie and hold out for more at the deadline. Hell, if he had another solid season, it's conceivable they could have offered arb and a team could have given them a pick even.
  12. The key here is not to get hung up on a publications rankings. While they're certainly fun and we all pay attention to them, Turner has legit 2 upside and a much higher floor than Archer. Archer had a pie in the sky ceiling of a 2, with a probable move to the back of the pen and a floor of someone who never makes an impact in the majors. While their rankings may be similar, they're not all that close in my eyes. Other publications had Archer much, much lower as well, in some he was closer to the 75ish range, for what it's worth. Turner is a consensus top 25 guy. Again, this shouldn't count for much, but I'm fairly positive analysts would agree Turner at this point is a much better and safer prospect than Archer was at this time last year.
  13. Baseball Instinct did their top 360 a while ago and figured I might as well post the Cubs, because it is interesting. 290-Ronald Torreyes, 262-Dan Vogelbach, 226- Jeimer Candelario, 216- Ben Wells, 185-Josh Vitters, 180- Trey McNutt, 135-Dillon Maples, 84-Junior Lake!!!!!!!!!!, 82-Matt Szczur, 61-Brett Jackson, 55+Javier Baez, 30- Anthony Rizzo.
  14. According to Levine, Cubs sent 6 or 7 people down to Florida to negotiate deal with Garza before hearing. Came to agreement right before hearing was supposed to start. Said Cubs had talked to Red Sox, Rangers, and Diamondbacks about Garza. Among others. If they can't sign him longterm, he'll be dealt before next offseason, as he'd lose value with just one season left under control. Cubs think he's worth 3 or 4 top prospects.
  15. Levine says this is at least a 4 year deal. So probably less than 2 mill towards the 2012 payroll, for what it's worth.
  16. Evidently on Talkin Baseball today, Levine said the Cubs are going to try everything possible to sign Cespedes. He thinks Cespedes may wind up getting a 6 year deal for 50 to 60 mill. Levine also said Cubs are still very interested in Soler as well.
  17. Do we have a realistic shot at JR? How much can we offer him? In the end, a team with a trade exception will snag him, at least that's what I'd think anyway.
  18. I want him gone, but unless we're getting a Greinke type return or better, I see why we may wait. That said, it's risky. Obviously, an injury or him struggling early on could hurt his value even more. That said, I figure teams will find more holes in their staffs between now and opening day, so who knows? I trust our guys will figure out the right move.
  19. The 40 man problem isn't immediate, but it's coming soon. McNutt, Brett. Rhee, Antigua, Ha, Struck, Rusin, guys we may acquire in a Garza, Byrd, Soto, Marmol, or Dempster deal. College guys we may draft that move quickly. It COULD get full quickly. Don't get me wrong, not all these guys will make it obviously, but we're getting close to the pointt where we'll start dealing away some guys. Probably within a year or so.
  20. This is a humongous advantage for us within the new CBA, by the way. With teams all having around the same monetary allotments for IFA's, this facility will certainly help us land the guys we're neck and neck with another team money-wise.
  21. Cc, you're trolling us, right? If not, what was your offseason plan? Did you want Pujols or Fielder at their pricetags? Darvish?
  22. . Who is what 3-4 years away? Prior cost less. Obviously the Cubs aren't spending $7 million on a 19-year old if they feel he's a 4 or 5 starter. Then they are stupid because that's what he'll be. Why? Because we're the Cubs? Or because Baseball America said so? Gotta be one or the other, right?
  23. At best a 4 or 5 starter for 7M. Who is what 3-4 years away? Prior cost less. Prior cost money and the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. That's a ton more. and obviously he was worth it. He was major league ready. This guy is projected as crap. Yeah, a 19 year old 6'2 lefty who throws low 90's, has 4 pitches, projection left, and was ROY in the main Cuban league as an 18 year old is absolute crap.
  24. We're a better major league team right now than we were last year. We've improved our system bigtime as well. And we've done it spending a lot less than we did last season. I feel confident we'll sign at least one and maybe both of Cespedes and Soler as well. Kind of an awesome start to Theo's reign, in my opinion.
  25. On my cell, so I can't post the link and it may very well be somewhere else on the site, but how about the Cubs plans for the Dominican complex? I'm pretty damn impressed to say the least. If anyone hasn't seen the article, here's some highlights from it. It will be constructed over the next 2 years. 50 acres large.biggest academy in the Dominican. Open year round. Will serve players from all over the world, including Venezuela, Aruba, Curacao, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua, and, of course, the Dominican. It will have 4 baseball fields, including one of artificial turf. 4 covered batting cages. 8 bullpens. Weight room. Cafeteria and kitchen. 2 locker rooms and 2 meeting rooms. A large classroom that can divide into 4 smaller ones. Theatre and video room. Dormitory that houses 80 players and 8 staff members. The academy will serve as an educational center where staff will teach both English and Spanish and players can fulfill requirements to get GED's. The academy will place an emphasis on Education, Health, and Nutrition. 12 to 18 months to build and the cost will be between 6 and 8 million. Absolutely awesome.
