  1. It's pretty interesting to see how Selig handles it. According to an article from today, both teams sent Selig a list of acceptable players for the compensation. No idea how many players deep the lists go, but my guess is both are pretty large, with all sorts of scenarios attached to them. If anything, I could see Selig taking a player off the bottom of Boston's list and maybe a player off the top of the Cubs list as well, to settle it.
  2. So you'd trade Deng, Taj and picks for Pau Gasol? I'm not sure what your motive is for that. For me, it's about getting past Miami and I just don't think we've got an answer for Bosh. We're never going to have an answer for Lebron anyway, so I'm willing to concede Lebron dominating us, but Pau plays extremely well against Bosh and would be a legit second scorer for us. He's excellent defensively and he's probably the best passing big guy in the NBA. There's 96 minutes at 4/5, so you could go 36 with Pau and give Noah and Boozer about 30 each. Like I said, I'd trade Asik for a 3 at that point as well and if we have to sign someone to replace him, I'd go with Sheed(assuming he's in shape). It'd give us Noah, Pau, Boozer, and Sheed up front, with 3 being open to whatever we trade for and Korver as the backup, Hamilton and Brewer at the 2(maybe JR as well, if rumors are true) with Rose and CJ. I like that. Maybe Deng and Taj is enough to get Pau, without giving up picks on our end, but I kind of doubt it.
  3. With what we'd have to give up for Dwight, I'd probably rather get involved in the deal as a 3rd party and try and get Pau from LA. We send Deng to LA, Taj and picks to Orlando, La sends us Pau and gets Dwight, Orlando gets Bynum and picks from LA too. Yeah, it gives us a logjam at the 4 and 5, but it gives us a nice advantage over the Heat for this year. We'd need to find a starting 3 somewhere, but it could be done, especially if Asik is dealt. After the season's over, try and trade Boozer, if it can't be done, he's an amnesty candidate.
  4. By the way, as badly as I want WR addressed in either the 1st round or with a very solid FA signing, even I would question taking Floyd. Not because of talent, but the 3 alcohol related offenses of his. Not saying I definitely wouldn't take him, but I'd be uncomfortable about it.
  5. Didn't the Packers decline us a chance to talk with McKenzie?
  6. Tigers, Orioles, Marlins, White Sox, and Cubs are 5 of the 6 teams showing most interest. Cespedes is waiting on visa to arrive so he can visit U.S. Should come to U.S. within 7 to 10 days.
  7. Theo's in Boston for some Charity event and said he doesn't know if compensation will be resolved by camp. Someone just tweeted Selig's just begun working on it and no decision is imminent. Personally, I think this could be a hold up to potential trades, as it could decide part of a package of what we may target.
  8. According to his agent, Adam Katz, market is "meaningful and agressive" and he expects Cespedes to be in camp with a team on time.
  9. CubsDen posted a small writeup on the guys in the article. Unfortunately, other than Soler and possibly Concepcion, the only other guy listed with any intrigue is Armando Rivero. He's 23, throws upper 90's and is probably a pen guy, but does throw 3 pitches, so some teams may look at him as a starter. Rodriguez is fringy all around. I would have thought more, since he was the ace of their Jr National team and his stats were excellent. The other 2 guys mentioned were Henry Urrutia and Adonis Garcia, who project as 4th OFers.
  10. Ben Badler just posted scouting reports on 6 Cubans not named Cespedes. Can someone recap what's in there, that has a subscription? I'd assume Soler and Concepcion are 2 of them and I know Omar Luis Rodriguez and Armando Rivero are 2 more. Should be some good stuff and tell us how many of these guys, other than Cespedes and Soler are actually worth getting excited about.
  11. With all of our lefties being unproven out of the pen, other than Russell, this one makes a little sense. Doubt he makes the team, but a decent stopgap nonetheless.
  12. He supposedly has 3 to 4 year offers out there and may be willing to pitch for the Red Sox on a one year deal. So, he doesn't wind up fitting us at all. We don't want him on a longterm deal with the direction we've taken, and we're not a contender right now, so I doubt he'd consider us on a one year deal.
  13. Selig pushed the deal through, so I highly doubt he's going to "punish" the Cubs over this. It has to be looked at the same way other cases were previously, then maybe add a tad more to that. To me, it's no different than looking at trading for a player with one year left on his deal. We're paying Theo close to 4 mill a year, so his value should be appraised accordingly to that, just as TangoTiger said. So, what's one year of a decent set up guy worth?
  14. He's still not "technically" eligible to be signed, right? I think I've read they're waiting on a few documents or something, but it still shouldn't keep teams from making offers or even coming to a verbal agreement with him. I'm fairly sure he'll sign before the middle of February anyway, since it's at least conceivable he could make a team out of spring training.
  15. The PSD insider said what happened is Lucchino wanted a "historic" compensation package for letting Theo walk. Kenney looked at it and said OK, because the precedent was Trinidad in the MacPhail deal. So, that's the impasse obviously: Lucchino needed to be much more specific with what was "historic". The way Selig made this deal happen, with him pushing it through the way he did, makes me think there's no chance we wind up giving something truly "significant". At this point, I'll say McNutt on the VERY VERY high end, or something like Antigua or Kirk with some cash, on the low end. Send them Carpenter or Dolis, with Rebel Ridling and half a mill and be done with it.
  16. Cool. That's a bit of a surprise to me.
  17. Project Prospect released their top 100 list and it's interesting, to say the least. Brett at 41, Rizzo at 47.......Nothing earth shatering. Baez at 92? Still, not a huge surprise. Ronald Torreyes at 75 and Welington Castillo at 91? Shocked. Granted, not a fan of PP honestly, but I had to list this, mostly because I'm already a huge Torreyes fan and think he'll actually be in that range on most lists this time next year.
  18. Pedro Araujo is a Cub. No clue on his signing bonus or anything, but he was probably a late signee last year, because his birthdate is 7/2/93 and he pitched, fairly decently, for the DSL Cubs last season.
  19. Not that I think it goes into this territory, but even 6/72 doesn't come close to crippling us. The only guaranteed money we've got on the books next year is Soriano, DeJesus, and Marmol. With the CBA really limiting us in the draft and internationally, this(and Soler and Concepcion and others) are the exact type of risks we have to take.I really believe if we truly see this guy as a solid player, we'll get him.
  20. Not a fan, but this is much harder to truly get a grasp on than baseball is, so I'll give him a shot as the decision maker and see how it goes. This isn't exactly inventing the wheel though: Cutler needs weapons, both to catch and to block. The defense could use a little youth. A few good moves and we're a legit contender.
  21. Levine evidently mentioned today he thinks the Cubs will bid higher than anyone else for Cespedes. Obviously, it's speculation, but I like hearing it anyway.
  22. I agree that Byrd will likely be moved during the season. However, I think that how soon depends as much on how Brett Jackson does in Iowa than Byrd himself. Of course, if someone were to come to us with an offer, he'd probably be moved either way, and even if Jackson is struggling the Sappelt enthusiasts can get to see him in action. Teams looking for a mid season replacement or spare bat are a lot more likely to come inquiring about Byrd than Upton, Jones, or Ethier. If so, it's because they'd think the cost is lower. If pricetags are anywhere near the same, teams would opt for all 3 of those guys before Byrd, because of either upside or age.
  23. Personally, I'd take Stevie, even though he's far from my favorite of the WR FA. It's just, in the end, most of these guys probably won't hit the market. Bowe? Probably franchised? V-Jax is being extended possibly, as odd as that appears. Welker probably isn't going anywhere. Brandon Lloyd, who I don't want anyway, may follow McDaniels to New England and take Ocho's spot. It leaves Stevie, Colston, Desean, and Manningham. I don't know whether the Saints will be able to find the money to keep Colston, but he could take less money to stay as well. Desean? Wild card, who I go back and forth on, as far as whether I want him or not. Manningham or Stevie may be our best bets. I'd take either, mainly because they'd certainly be an upgrade from what we've got currently. Any help for Jay is much appreciated, as far as I'm concerned. That said, I love the idea of getting Finley and trading way up to get Blackmon.
  24. I hope the Cards sign him. One less pitcher out there for contenders to go get, makes the Garza market stronger. Not like we'd trade Garza to them, so it eliminates a pitcher from the teams we've been talking to.
  25. Haltey getting to pitch in AFL probably helped his cause. Clevenger doesn't surprise me, because while his ceiling is pretty low, his floor is almost the exact same: backup catcher. Plus, I think BA puts a lot of credence in guys at the higher levels. Along with big signing bonuses. I was a little surprised Malave didn't make the list, just because of the bonus. Interesting list, but not anything close to what any of us will probably have.
