  1. According to his agent, Concepcion is extremely close to signing somewhere, could be this weekend, will be signed by next week. Even if he's a 4/5 guy, I want him, because it can't hurt with our pursuits of the big 2.
  2. Yeah, him and Bianchi. I wonder if Corpas cleared already or we may lose him still. Personally, I kind of figure he'll make our opening day pen, if he's around. I doubt he's got much of a chance to make the opening day roster if he's being outrighted at the end of January. Ahh, good point. Maybe Sonnanstine has the better shot? I just figure we'll have some sort of "veteran presence" hanging around, other than Wood and Marmol. On the other hand, having a pen full of Dolis, Beliveau, Carpenter, maybe Gaub or Mateo, could be fun to go along with Marmol, Wood, and Russell. In a kindasorta throw away season, you'd probably develop 2 of those guys into guys you think of as solid contributors for the future. 1-2 of Samardzija, Wells, or Volstad will likely also be in that bullpen. Yeah, even if Garza's dealt, one of those guys is in the pen. I always forget about Wells, because I don't think he'll make the rotation. But, with his salary, if he does NOT make the rotation, he's pretty hard to trade at this point.

  4. It's a great situation for us honestly; We're selling youth this year, as it is.n So, when we sell off at midseason or whenever, bringing up Cespedes(if signed), Turner(if traded for), Brett, Rizzo, and maybe McNutt, will keep people interested and coming out to the ballpark, where they might not have previously.

  6. DeJesus is probably still on the team, so he's probably starting over Sappelt. The rotation could be some semblance of Wood/Shark/Volstad/Turner/McNutt, which would be all sorts of interesting, at the very least.
  7. I wonder how far we post dated Wood's contract for? We still haven't cut anyone from the 40 man, to add him yet.
  8. On the Garza trade front with Detroit, Prince's contract does NOT help matters, it's not severely backloaded. 23 for 1st 2 years, 24 for last 7.
  9. The ABTY guy does get a lot of credit at PSD, he's not Marlin, but I listen to what he's saying, at least. The dude on BCB? Unless Dunston lied to me on Twitter, he didn't even know himself, whether he was going to sign or not until early the last day, making this guy's report an educated guess, it would seem.
  10. Knobler's with CBS, I believe. He's broken a few things this offseason, can't remember what though. Is there a Vegas Line for amount of his contract anywhere? By the way, it looks like they've jumped the gun on him being eligible to sign already. Haven't seen those reports crop up today, at least. Most of what I read said it'd be 2 weeks from when he gained residency, so I'm guessing he's signed by someoen right in time for spring training.
  11. Maybe lots of people blindly threw money down when we signed Theo? I know our odds are typically skewed somewhat, because of our large fanbase, but wouldn't have thought something like this was possible.
  12. Levine's chat today and he mentioned he could still see us adding a 2B again. When asked who was out there, he mentioned Prado. Said Byrd has interested the Braves for 8 to 10 months. Said this was speculation on his part, but I could get behind a swap like that. Byrd's replaceable in house and Prado, assuming he's healthy, is much better offensively anyway, than Barney.
  13. Mike Ilitch turns 83 during the middle of the season, making me think Detroit is going "all in" since they did the Fielder move. Their payroll heading into that was sitting at 104. It was 106 last year. My guess is it's like most deals and is backloaded quite a bit. The reason I see Garza coming back onto their radar though, other than trying to develop Turner in a pressure cooker atmosphere, is their payrolls the previous few season went as such(2010 and back) 133, 115, and 137. So, they'll spend some money and only have 64 mill committed in 2013, not counting Fielder. We really should be able to make this work with them now somehow, because they've thrown themselves in it to win immediately. My guess is we need to settle his arb number before anything's going to happen on this front.
  14. Year 1 of this deal could be very telling. Hopefully, it's very low and they still have room to add Garza as well now. Hell, if it'd net us what we want, I don't care if we sent money along with Garza, to make it work.
  15. I could see us making a move for Upton, but not until we know what's happening with Cespedes. He's about the only FA bat in 2013's class with upside. But Tampa knows this as well, so someone's going to have to pay up for him or else they'll take the comp at the end of the year. Which is my guess, because I doubt they'll deal him while in contention personally, unless they're totally overwhelmed.
  16. Because, he's just going to be a regular free agent, no? It will go like this: Cubs just offered: x amount of dollars Will you bid higher? My point is every team has a cutoff point and they have no clue what ours may be, so saying they'll outbid everyone for him just screams "scare tactic" to me. Much like their agressive Pujols' push, that wasn't all that agressive, once all was said and done.
  17. Callis said a couple of times Brett, Baez, and Szczur will be in the top 100. Obviously, Rizzo will be as well, but he was asked before we traded for him. BA is pretty bullish on our system as Callis has said we were 12th in their rankings, BEFORE the Rizzo deal and could move up a spot or two, with that.
  18. Yeah, I saw that but can't help but think how that's possible, since they have no idea what we may bid.
  19. Total perfection for me would be to sign Cespedes and Soler(he's more important to me though), one of Concepcion or Luis, and a couple of 16-18 year old IFA's like Manny Gonzalez, Helsin Martinez, or Hyuk Sung Han. Trade Garza and Byrd before season starts and Soto, Demp, and Marmol by deadline.
  20. We've downgraded 1B for 2012 most likely, but gotten cheaper. With a bigtime possibility for the future being acquired. We downgraded 3B as well, but for a much younger, upside type with better defense. Got much cheaper here as well. Added a defensive minded OFer with solid OBP, kind of a wash from where we started 2011, with Fukudome, but again, much cheaper. Rid ourselves of a headcase that was certainly in his final season here, for a young, fairly high upside guy who's peripherals say should be better than he's been. Traded the best setup guy in baseball, in the last year of his deal, for a solid 3/4 starter with 5 years of control, a 4th OFer type AND our likely future 2B as well. Added another mid rotation lefty SP for well below market value. Lost a couple of guys in Rule 5 that didn't have a spot, but added 2 1st round comp picks for the draft. Saved 25 mill in the process. Still looking to improve the system, probably will have a few more moves before the season starts. I'm sorry, but for the plan they've put in place, this is damn near a perfect offseason, as far as I'm concerned.
  21. Winner.
  22. The Red Sox apparently just signed Cody Ross, appear to be after Roy Oswalt, and don't want to go over the luxury tax threshold. After trading Scutaro, they certainly have a need at SS, where Iglesias isn't ready yet and may never hit enough be anyway. Barney, 5 years of control, and utter averagishness, fits them perfectly right now, if we could get them to give us a solid prospect for him. Even for Barney, they still don't have any pitching though.
  23. Some info coming from a Yankees blog about Concepcion, admittedly I'm unsure about the validity, but it's the first report I've heard on his stuff. He's 6'1, 175 pounds with projection. He throws a 89-91 MPH FB that tops out at 94. Has a plus curve with a solid slider and change. Pitches to contact. So, if this is true, he's certainly a serious talent, in fact, I'd think he WOULD be a top 100 guy if ALL of this were true.
  24. The Dodgers' bids were due today, at least loosely. They'll know the winner in very early February. All it takes at that point is for McCourt to get permission from the future owner(who does NOT have to be approved by MLB because it's a BK sale) and he can bid whatever they want him to. This thing has drug out this long already, it'd kind of be silly for Boras not to wait and see how this plays out now.
  25. A blurb on MLBTR mentioned us and the White Sox as 2 of the 4 teams showing the most interest in Concepcion, who it also mentioned as someone who's probably signing within the next 2 weeks. Has an offer on the table from someone. This will be extremely interesting to watch go down too, with it being the last offseason we can pay whatever we want to for these guys. He's not a top 100 guy(at least currently). He doesn't throw all that hard and is considered a finesse guy. Yet, I figure his signing bonus will be humongous. Without knowing anything about his stuff, just his results in Cuba, I fully expect him to receive upper 1st round type money from someone. I'll put my own personal over/under on his signing bonus at 5 mill. He's really going to benefit from being the best(probably?) Pitcher in still available in the IFA market.
