  1. Yeah, you'd have to be really sold on a guy to spend the entire budget on him. I liked our approach last year: Signed 2 top 10 guys, a top 25 guy, gave out a couple of other decent six figure bonuses and rounded it out with cheap guys. Not even counting over 2 mill spent on Cubans, which would have counted against the budget with the new rules.
  2. It's considered an averagish class, but light on pitching. If you can roll your budget over to the next year, that's news to me. As for whether the budget is enough to land 2-3 big talents? I'll say no. It lowers the asking price of these guys by default to where everyone basically will be offering close to the same amount for each player. My guess is we can land one elite talent, one other top 30 type and a couple of 250000 types.
  3. There were a few Lofton comps thrown out on Dunston last year. But he's really raw. I'm very encouraged by his numbers. He's supposedly a great makeup guy too, for what it's worth.
  4. My only issue with waiting til next year is I wonder if we could get screwed with a world draft that quickly? I hope not, because I really want to see the dynamic involved with being able to trade IFA money. Granted, you can only add up to half of your original total, but if we had 4 mill next year, adding an extra 2 to that could be gigantically beneficial. I'm sure Theo's well aware of what teams spend and which don't. Because those are the ones likely to come off their budget easily anyway.
  5. Pugliese has done pretty well.
  6. Hurt. Hopefully starts pitching soon.
  7. I keep thinking, hoping, we go "all in" on IFA this year, but with as bad as we are at the major league level, next year we'll have a very large pool amount and I don't want to have to spend it on lower end guys, after the penalties. I guess next year is really when we should go "all in" especially with the pitching being weak this year.
  8. I fully expect Peavy to nail either Castro or LaHair today.
  9. I read somewhere that Cabrera runs a sub 6.4 60, which is Billy Hamilton speed.
  10. I'm not even sure that question can be answered. Every team is going to look at our system differently. Headley's pretty damn solid, I doubt they'd let him go without getting a top 100 guy, a top 10 guy from a system, and a high upside type flyer. But yeah, we have the ability to make a trade for his caliber of player. We also have the ability to make a deal for pretty much anyone that could be available. Not that we would gut our system to do so. After the draft, some graduations, probably a sell off or two, some IFA signings, and seeing how our guys in short season look, we'll have a better grasp of where our system is and what we could trade for.
  11. Seriously, I've made fun of it, was pissed about it and even booed the damn thing. However, Theo and Jed literally had less than a day to make a trade here. We lost 3 damn catchers. Finding a guy you can get for nothing is about all a noncontending team should try to do. What costs nothing? Koyie Hill, that's what. Hell, they may have even gained some currency with Dempster, for bringing in his buddy, that helps allow them to deal him later on. But Hill? He'll be DFA'd as soon as 2 of our guys are back. Yeah, he's awful, but he's going to be here for a week or so, only because we lost each catcher that was on our 40 man within a few weeks.
  12. UNC is not leaving the ACC and Duke. With the power play Mark Warner(gov of Virginia) pulled, to get Va Tech into the ACC, I doubt they go anywhere without UVA attached.
  13. I just asked KG about Torreyes and he said it's truckloads of weak contacts. Damnit.
  14. I'll be surprised if THIS is true. The guy who started this rumor has been saying it for a month. Someone else picked it up and now it's making it's rounds. Like Soler to the Cubs did a few months back. Clemson is dying to join the SEC. My guess is the SEC is trying to do better though. But very soon, Clemson and FSU will leave. Fsu almost definitely to the SEC and I think Clemson eventually gets in there too.
  15. You don't think LaHair and Rizzo will both be in the lineup, right? Or at least you think the D cancels the O, if LaHair is in LF, correct? This alone is enough to where you WOULD have a big difference of opinion, with where we are at. Basically, I would think you're seeing the offense as much further away than what I do. Mostly just from a difference of opinion on LaHair.
  16. Chris Crawford, of MlbDraftInsider, just posted his latest mock. His top 5, go Appel, Buxton, Zunino, Gausman, and Giolito. Has us taking Correa, with 7-10 going Almora, Marrero, McCullers, and Fried. Zimmer falls to 13 with the White Sox. Has us taking Martin Agosto and Kieran Lovegrove with our supplemental picks.
  17. To play devil's advocate, because I like Zunino quite a bit personally, most that don't like him point to him struggling inside the SEC this year and getting his numbers outside the conference.
  18. Because a 100-loss team is probably significantly worse than an 80-loss team and would require more money/trades/work to improve. I guess we'll just disagree on this. But I think with what we currently have and with what we've got coming in a month or two, a big bat, a big arm, and a few changes to the pen is more than enough to put this team into contention.
  19. N&G, why is it different? We could be an 80, 90, or 100 loss team this year. But we can still have the same approach to the upcoming offseason, because of the pieces we have moving forward.
  20. I think, like, 4 people were doing that. I know that. My point is we're walking a fine line between sucking, but seeing enough positives that to me, the losses don't matter at all. There are more people here who get annoyed that this team is so unnecessarily bad than were picking them to maybe be decent a week ago. True. I'm just saying whether we lose 85, 95, or 105 games this year, we've got enough pieces to make major moves next season. And the more losses this year just means more IFA money and better draft positioning. I'm fine with it.

  22. Last week, we were putting odds out on whether we could reach. 500 this year or not. Now we're on a pace to lose 100 games. Funny thing is though, if we can multiply everything by 4 right now and end the season, I'd do it and not think twice.
  23. Damn, that could be pretty traumatic. I think you handled it pretty well by hoping for a Kieran or Kevin. I'm sure someone dropkicked their dog that found out that way.
  24. Wonder why Searle was demoted to Daytona? He hadn't been pitching all that poorly.
