  1. I hope that Whitson comes back strong although I have to wonder how high he'd be on our list, because unless I'm mistaken, these guys thought they had a deal with him, then he backed out.

SSR: I think that the goal behind this obviously, is to have a very good, very young team(I'm sure you figured that, but feel I guess I should clarify, just in case). Obviously adding a FA or two, that are difference makers. And continually draft tons of pitching, since it's so volatile. So not to wind up as our early 2000's staffs did. I know we're all behind whatever they wind up doing and other than a very select few, I think we all have confidence they'll execute it. Do I think some of this could be done differently? Absolutely. But I fully acknowledge these guys are smart as hell and know whatever it is they've got planned and won't change course midstream. But this IS what I'm taking from what little we get out of them.

No, not at all. But I do think these guys actually want to do what Hendry once said: get good and stay that way. Sure, I think it can be done different, to an extent than what they're doing it. But I think the renovation and the soon to be expiring WGN deal are both playing a major factor in all of this. They won't suck tremendously for both 2013 and 2014, but I totally expect next year to be like this one. And then once the system has a very solid base, to start making trades from it right after that. If I tried pinpointing it, I guess I see 65ish wins next year, maybe 75 in 2014 and hopefully 90+ for 5 of the following 7, with injuries, bad luck, whatever being the dropff for the other 2.
  4. He's been right on a ton of stuff that came out of no where, I definitely think he's got connections, but I honestly can't remember whether he said he HAD TJS or if he was going to. And if I remember, a couple of media guys followed up with the same thing.
  5. Baez had a couple of weeks in EXST where he was cold as ice, I'm not the least bit worried about him. He'll learn from it.

Wrong. The new CBA DOES make it an either/or proposition, unless you're much luckier than the next guy. The route they're taking is hoping they stock it up SO MUCH, that the pipeline stays solid for their entire tenure. Which I'm figuring is that 10 year threshold Theo's mentioned before. If it takes until 2015, in order to be competitive(which unfortunately may wind up being the case), they'll have had 4 high draft slots and 3 large IFA budgets, plus trades where we acquired prospects. At that point, if this system isn't the best in baseball, something's gone wrong. But having that type of system then allows a better team to take more risks as well and if you hit on a couple of them, it stays at the top. It's basically looking to me like these guys are going to have one cycle. 3 years of being bad, with the last being slightly better, followed by 7 years of being good to excellent. The FA that are signed to big money likely will be coming off the books around that 10 year period and it's probably around the time the system will be on it's way down as well. So, if they want to jet at that point, they'll be leaving the team with more than they came into it with.
  7. What the hell? So is he a ticking time bomb now? I'd have rather him have had it and gotten it over with. This was basicakky a lost developmental year for him anyway, now if his elobow flares back up, it'll be two.
  8. Saunders goes 4-6 tonight. At some point, I guess now, I'm going to have to begin to think he's a possible prospect.
  9. Like McNeil a lot. He's firmly in my top 30. I'm really big on the "frame" of a player. McNeil is a good athlete with a very good "baseball body". He throws high 80s-low 90s with some sink, also throws a slider and change. Looks pretty wiry right now, but is a guy that I feel is going to be able to up the fastball a couple ticks (has hit 93 in the past, not sure how velo is as a pro so far). Hearing good things about his delivery too. He's going to need time, but he has the frame to add some lower body strength/mass, and get the fastball to the point he's working at 92-94, touching 95-96 and if he refines the breaking ball, I think he's a guy to keep a real close eye on. Sounds like a slighter built Ben Wells, minus a tick or two. Which would make me very happy.
  10. McNeil went 4 5 0 0 0 2, ERA down to 1.69.....Wish AZPhil would give us some velo reports on some of our young pitching we just drafted.

Offseason-wise, I don't think for a second we'll be looking like a contender heading into next year. I expect one trade for a young pitcher that plugs into the rotation, Soriano dealt, a few vets signed......Maybe 2 starting pitchers, like a Marcum and Liriano, a stopgap 3B, maybe Rolen, and a stopgap plugin at LF, maybe Hairston. A vet bullpen arm, like Durbin. If any Cubans defect, I figure they'll again be our main focus. Doubtful we're looking at more than a 70ish win season.

I'm probably as big a fan of Brett as there is on here and I like Vitters a relatively decent amount as well. That said, I'm not sold on either right now, nor do I have any clue how ANYONE even could be.
  13. Without knowing for a fact, I definitely think they'll be replaced. Hendry ran a mom and pop store with the smallest amount of employees in all of baseball. My guess is they're replaced and we add additional guys as well.
  14. Names other than Zisk, are Rick Schroeder(who's headed back to Silver Spoons), Charlie Aliano, Joe Hausey, Tom Borque, and Tom Shafer.
  15. We canned 6 scouts today, including Richie Zisk. Altogether, it was 4 pro scouts, one amateur scout and a crosschecker.
  16. I didn't realize Ho-Ho's had that much testosterone in them.
  17. Sure, it's speculation about whether or not he'd lower his contract demands, but it doesn't seem likely. And if he did, he'd also likely be insistent on a NTC(which was the rumor back during past negotiations) and our guys don't appear willing to give them out. In my mind, as a guy who loves our FO, this was the first true mistake from them. They gambled and lost here, assuming they wanted to trade him, which I definitely think was the case. Now our best tradable asset is worth much less than he was at one point.
  18. Brett, that's my point: In a market where it was likely that a guy is major league-ready, which any 27 year old should be( especially an upside 3/4 starter/7-8 inning guy) he would have received a very sizable bonus from someone. And with it not even getting reported, it likely means he got under 250k. Because even those Cuban bonuses get mentioned. Considering none of our other Cubans who've signed for under a mill are remotely close to even sniffing a Cubs top 30 list, I don't think it's a stretch to call Reyes a borderline non prospect. If you look through our entire system, we don't have many 3/4 starter upside guys, so my thoughts on Reyes being mentioned whatsoever in that tone, is just that it was a lazy description, when basically nothing is known of the guy and his lack of hype or bonus screams out org guy.
  19. Actially, that bothered me, because he was scheduled to go with Blackburn, who went the next day. I know he charted pitches yesterday and some of the guys were ragging him for being shitty at it.
  20. Yeah, he's showing he went 2 now.
  21. Without knowing the distance whatsoever from one to the other, is it possible to go to a day game at Wrigley and then catch the entire game in Kane County in the evening?
  22. At this point, Pierce has gone 4, Underwood has gone 3. Gotta wonder if this is just a glitch or if they're pitching deeper.
  23. Underwood, 2 0 0 0 0 1, 4GB/0FB
  24. No, he's truly not. He's got as good of stuff as anyone currently on our major league staff, not named Shark. Give him time.
