  1. Of course it's possible that the Reds don't stop trying for 3 years after their old guys get old. Well awesome. We can worry about beating an 80 win Reds team too then. They're not a major market team, nor do they have tons of help coming. The Reds might have a higher payroll than us next season. Good for them. When the time comes, they're stuck in 2009 Cubs territory as an average team with not much of an outlook.
  2. They'll be traded for. As you well know. Our system isn't producing 5 superstars, nor are our guys counting on that. But its certainly going to produce some and we'll definitely have the currency to trade for others.

  4. and the cardinals have only won 90 games twice in the past seven years, so you're looking for the cubs to have a MUCH more successful run than what they are on right now. True, but they're currently in as good or better shape than they were at any point during that time. An extension to Wainwright that goes bad gurts them. Molina's deal will too eventually. Holliday as well. But they have lots of pitching on the way that may make uo for Wainwright and Tavares making up for Holliday. They're going to be good. It'll be easier dealing with them alone, than dealing with the Reds hitting on all cylinders as well right now.
  5. KCF, obviously I'm on that side as well. But I could see how adding Fielder, maybe trading for Gio, supplementing a bit, adding another big piece or two this offseason would have put them in contention sooner. That said, as I have continually, nauseatingly said, the entirety of the organization wouldn't be in near as goodvof shape. I see us having the top system in baseball heading into 2015. It won't surprise me if we have 10 top 100 types at that point honestly. Which is where that wave of 26-27 year olds will come from. Hard to see it, because we don't know who they are obviously,(Stanton, Moore, Heyward, etc types) but I do see it happening and barring multiple injuries, a very long, sustained run.
  6. See, I look at it the opposite: The Reds and Cards are really good now and would be hard to overtake at this exact point. But their players will be getting older and the contracts will look worse for them in a few years, making it easier on us. At least with the Reds. The Cards have such a good system right now, they're going to be tough for a long time.
  7. The two sides here both want the same thing, just want to go about it differently. If the Cubs had added bigger pieces last offseason, more during this offseason and carried 140-150 mill payroll throughout the entirety of the next decade, it IS likely they'd wind up with 6-7 playoff appearances out of it. The other group thinks they can have a sustained run of 6-7 straight by building the way they are. Theo sees the second way though, as the one where you're likely fielding 90+ win teams winning the division year in and year out, instead of possibly getting a few WC playoff berths the other way. We'll know in a decade which side was right.
  8. You man if he sticks on our roster all season in 2013? I would definitely think so. Not sure thats what you're asking though. If you're asking if we trade for him, decline the option, offer him arb, and he declines, then no, we get nothing.
  9. They're on record as to saying any money saved can be used in future seasons. Personally, I don't care what the payroll winds up being. Its well documented you don't need a 200 mill payroll to win. If our payroll hits 110 this year or next, I'll be surprised.
  10. I'll be a little surprised if it doesn't take a real prospect or two honestly. Haren had been worth 36 WAR over the 7 previous seasons, prior to him getting hurt last year. Just getting him on a one year deal has value within itself. Whether its us or whoever, I'll put the over/under on value going back to the Angels as Vittersish.
  11. I'm confident they WILL make noteworthy acquisitions this offseason. Not FA, but another Rizzo type trade or two. Theo said there are 6 guys in our core right now: Castro, Rizzo, Shark, Baez, Soler, and Almora. He wants that doubled by this time next year. Barney, Castillo, Garza, and Brett have a shot at moving into that group. My guess is 2 of them will. A guy like Paniagua or Vizcaino could get there. Our 2nd pick will be there. Probably leaves 2 more to come via trade. I understand some here think its boring as hell to watch this go on, but they have all but said this is a video game rebuild, at this point. To me, you can bitch and moan about the ML roster or you can follow everything else much closer and enjoy the progress thats going on.
  12. Either one is excellent, please post the response.
  13. The Baez injury happened during the game, possibly giving a high five. Definitely did NOT punch a wall or anything though.
  14. We've been in contact with his agent about returning, according to Muskat.
  15. Russell's hitting arb and has 3 years of control left. Beliveau would likely have more value than him too right now, just because of the extra control. Russell is competent, but not much else.
  16. Love won't be a FA in 2014, right? Of course, as was just mentioned, Taj could be a part of a deal for him. If you had Love/Noah/Rose, you could conceivably add another max contract, if the trade went down after the addition thru FA.
  17. 56 starts scattered over half a decade isn't worth talking about and you know it. Many people thought he turned a corner this year once he was put into the rotation. His September was pathetic, partly due to giving up 10 homers in 26.2 innings. At any rate, to say he's got a shot at being better than most of a pitiful FA class doesn't seem all that far-fetched.
  18. That's mighty bullish on a 29-year-old with 1.1 career fWAR/200 IP (and 0.96 this year). Less than an hour ago, in the thread directly below this one, you said WAR still isn't a good way to measure relievers. Villanueva has 56 starts out of 301 games.
  19. Well, I guess this limits their superstar addition to being a 2 or a 3. I like Taj, but I think we may have been in better shape longterm if we had dealt him.
  20. Why? We could do much better things with $13M. Agreed. But I don't want to hate on the idea too hard because it'd be better than ending the offseason with our two new SPs being like Carlos Villanueva and someone else like that. Villanueva could easily wind up as one of the 4-5 best FA SP going forward out of this class. If we wind up with Villanueva, Jin, and a young guy we traded for, I'll be very happy.
  21. I like Taj a bunch and think he's better than Boozer. But honestly, giving him a 4/40 type deal would hinder our chances at getting a superstar in 2014. I do think that we'll pay the luxury tax, but it'll take acquiring a superstar to do it. And we'll be competing with the Lakers in great shape to make bigtime moves.
  22. According to a few on Twitter, Angels likely just kicking in buyout money of a mill. So, the Royals, who came out recently saying they have 20 mill to spend on pitching thisvoffseason, just spent 13 on Santana and probably 3 on Volstad. Before FA can even sign with other teams. Phenomenal.
  23. Kyle, bullpens are a crapshoot. You know that. In all honesty, we can throw a Marmol, Russell, Camp, Bowden, Dolis, and 2 one year, cheap guys out there and wind up with a decent pen. All League's deal does is up the price and years for the Brandon Lyons, Jon Rauchs, and Matt Capps of the world. If you can get Madson on a one year, absolutely go for it. If Marmol gets dealt? Give out a contract to 1 of those 3 I just listed. But spending on your Howry, Eyre types should be reserved for when we have a chance AND a need. I'm hoping we develop those guys before it's an actual need.
  24. Angels are paying some money in the deal. No clue why they didn't just release him, since Sisk is basically a nothing return.
  25. Hell, I follow Kyle to PSD and argue with him there too.
