  1. I like the pitching matchups for STL in Houston. I am not sure that Clemens has much left in his tank. He struggled through September and then pitched poorly against Atlanta in his start (although he did look good in relief). His hamstrings could give out at any moment. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cards win game three. I also like the matchup of Suppan vs Backe in game 4, and I will take Carpenter over Pettitte as well. I look for a big series out of Edmonds in Houston. He likes to go to the opposite field which sets him up for a cheap home rune to the Crawford boxes. I think the Cardinals will take 2 of 3 in Houston.
  2. I understand why the games are scheduled the way they are time iwse, but as k said, I don't have to like it. The late weekend game didn't bother me as much as the two day games during the week. I think it is ok to hope that MLB would try to be more fair rather than focus only on financial considerations.
  3. I think that Cardinal fans had a legitimate complaint. Each game of the NLDS the Cardinals played in was at the least favorable time on that day. I don't enjoy having to miss watching post season games because I have to work. As for the 10:00 p.m. CST game, I was upset that it was starting an hour later than a normal west coasr game would start. THe Cardinals did finish with the best record in baseball, and then played the least favorable time schedule.
  4. It was a two hopper hit hard that was hit squarely at Nunez. Definitely not a hit. I tend to think that the scoring is more lenient toward awarding hits rather than errors anyway. That one wasn't very close.
  5. I'm not sure that Eck is getting that many more days off this year. He projects to get 628 ABs this year, while his previous high was 608.
  6. I haven't seen a replay, so I will wait until I see the play before I make a judgement. Luna had been hit once in the series already and was the at the center of what lead to the altercation in Pittsburgh. If the pitch clearly looked intentional (and I am not saying it did, as I haven't seen a replay yet) then I do not have a problem with the umpire ejecting the pitcher.
  7. Is it safe to assume that most will recognize my allegiances. :D
  8. I was watching the game in question and the slide you were talking about wasn't even close to being a dirty slide. Castillo landed akwardly after jumping to avoid the incoming runner. It was a standard slide to break up a double play. Luna did not go wide of the bag or come in with his spikes up.
  9. There usually are quite a few scalpers out and you can't get tickets for a little over face value. The hotel the scalpers are standing by is the Marriott.
  10. That is a pretty classless comment. Pfffft. Matt Morris has much less class than anyone. 2002: Sosa hits a 500-ft HR off him: "Sammy Sosa stole signs from our dugout" 2003: He complians that the Cards have to play Houston in Sept., while the Cubs didn't: "MLB is being unfair to us. They want the Cubs to win" You cheered because a Cardinal player was injured. That is pretty classless in my opinion. How Morris was brought into this is beyond me. I don't think highly of any person that cheers an injury of any player.
  11. FYI - Going back to 1980, the biggest negative win differential (starters only) by a Cy Young winner was 5 games by Randy Johnson in 1999. Johnson went 17-9 with a 2.48 ERA compared to Hampton at 22-4 with a 2.90 ERA. In that year RJ struck out 364 while Hampton K'ed just 177. Given Carpenters 8 win lead and lead in K's, I don't see how Clemens could win the Cy Young, unless voters take age and name recognition into consideration.
  12. That is a pretty classless comment.
  13. I think indifferent said that you should sell those tickets to me instead (please).
  14. They've scored fewer runs this year. They won so many games because they have the best pitching in the game this year. I am not debating that they are scoring more runs with Pods, I just think that his benefit to the team might go a little beyond statistics. The team is definitely better because of the improved pitching. I think that if you have good pitching, you can win a lot of games with small ball, because you score runs more consistently (albeit fewer in total). It is hard to argue statistically, Pods has been more valuable. If the whole team bought into playing with a small ball approach and it was working, then I think that Pods might be a little more valuable than the stats might show.
  15. All of the playoff teams definitely have noticeable weaknesses this year. The Cards might be in the best shape if Sanders/Walker are back to healthy by playoff time. I would feel more comfortable if Ray King could be a little more useful out of the pen. It would also be nice if Morris and Mulder could have strong finishes.
  16. Getting Pods might have allowed/helped Guillen change the overall attitude of the team. Playing small ball seemed to have worked for them. Statitstically, it definitely looks like Lee would have been the better option.
  17. To update: Clemens pitched another gem Sunday night, 6 IP 0 ER, got a no decision. Team lost 1-0. Clemens ERA 1.51 11-6 Carpenter just got his 19th win. Pitching 7.2 innings, giving up one run. ERA 2.29 19-4
  18. Marquis didn't pitch quite as well as his stat line would indicate. There were two balls hit to the wall off of him that would have been homeruns in pretty much every stadium other than RFK.
  19. Either way, that'll be one hell of a game to watch. I missed the last one, and that turned out to be a battle. This one should be even better. It would be hard to outdo the last one. Only one earned run was given up during the game. The outcome was pretty nice as well.
  20. Neither team is completely innocent when it comes to the heated rivalry. Morris threw up and in a couple of times, but I don't believe he was trying to hit Lee in the head as much as he was sending a message that he didn't appreciate Cards batters being thrown at. A couple of Cardinal hitters had been thrown at in the same game. I believe Kerry Wood has thrown up and in on batters many more times than Morris has.
  21. Whose head did he throw at? Did he hit a player in the head?
  22. Still need homefield advantage, and it is way too early to relax/assume a spot is locked up.
  23. It'd be interesting to see if the lid was on the juice box for that one. It was at Busch Stadium against Clemens. I was there :D
  24. More important than it is to start the season off strong? A win in April counts the same in the standings as a win in August. Wins do count the same in April as they do in September. On the other hand, if you lose a game in April, you still have 130+ games to make up for it. The later it gets, the fewer opportunities you have to make up ground or maintain a lead.
  25. I don't think it is so much a "what have you done for me lately" attitude as it is that it is important to finish the season strong to get your team into the playoffs.
