  1. We need need need those pitchers to stay healthy. That bit about Maddux is especially encouraging. It'll be great if he's off to a better start. Our season depends on this pitching to stay healthy. It's as simple as that. And IF the pitching stays healthy, then we have an over-load of pitchers we can deal at the deadline. Could be a great position to be in. But as we all know that the if is a HUGE IF.
  2. Hey Meat, did it sound as if Hendry is done making moves for the winter?
  3. I hope Jim says that he has loaded up on pitching to trade them to get a BIG TIME bat. Say.......Abrau, Manny......Right
  4. We need to pay it as long as Z, and Prior stay.
  5. Sure, as long as we get Manny as well. :D
  6. What kind of change do you have in mind?
  7. Perhaps, I'll be accused of drinking Kool-Aid. Perhaps, the board prefers the "glass is half-empty" pessimism to my "glass is half-full" optimism. But I'll say it: our division doesn't scare me. If we're healthy, we'll be much better than last year. And keep in mind, we played decent against the Central and West, and might have won a few more of those games if Howry and Eyre were around. Our biggest issue was our 11-23 record against the NL East including 1-5 against WAS and 1-6 against ATL. That definitely can't happen again if this club is to win. Am I saying there are no holes? Of course not. There are - no doubt. But, I also didn't think in April or May or June or even July that the Astros would be playing the White Sox in the World Series with those less than stellar offenses. We should continue to be critical. We must. I believe that Cubs brass reads this stuff - I think it makes a difference. At the same time, I just can't be pessimistic in January. It just doesn't seem right. I'm with you on this one Hoops. I like what they have done so far.....minus the Jones signing. I just wish that there were some way to get another big bat. I'm kinda torn here though. If they did get another big bat, then that means Murton sits. I dont like that. The rotation is solid, IF it can stay healthy. The pen is much improved. And the line up is solid. If they could just get one more big bat.
  8. Personally, I think Boston is WAY overpaying for Tejada. So, let's leave Baltimore out of the Manny sweepstakes, and we'll take Manny while Tampa takes prospects while sending Huff and Lugo to Boston. Done! I second that! What could it hurt?
  9. brionch you know you're my boy, but how .950 OPS right-fielders were available this offseason? There were only 3 .950+ OPS outfielders in all of baseball last year. Brian Giles wasn't one of them. Manny, Bay, Guererro. Unless your suggesting the Cubs trade Prior for Manny. (don't do it...I got eyerolled off the board for suggesting it would be better than Tejada for Prior---still not good, but better.) Tejada at .865 is nothing to sneeze at. You were (we all were) spoiled by good Sammy into thinking that 1.100 OPS should be expected from your RF. I still don't give up Prior for Tejada. No eyerolling here MrWood, you are right on. This is what we pay Dusy for. To control uncontrollable players. Everyone was on the Bradley bandWGN. Manny is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than Bradley. Again, just look at his numbers. They speak for themselves. Difference: Bradley wouldn't have cost you Prior. I'm not suggesting trade Prior for Manny, just that its better than Prior for Tejada. I understand your point. If it was up to me, I'd keep Prior. But Hendry seems hell-bent on using him for an impact bat. Like you said, if you are going to trade him, at least try to trade him for the best options. IMO Manny would help out this team more than Miggy.

  11. Thats why I have said all along that we need Manny, not Miggy. Just look at the production. Sure he is a headcase, but again, look at the production. You cant realistically beat Mannys production. If everyone wants to look at stats then look. Cedeno would be just fine at short. And is young and cheap. Just try to imagine what that line-up could produce.
  12. I don't think they have the payroll room to sign Weaver if they trade for Tejada. I am not sure if my earlier comments made it into this thread, but I think Walker becomes expendable if Tejada is acquired. Thus, JH will likely seek to spin him offto a team in need of 2B/DH in return for a vet SP. I asked for ideas earlier on who that might be. So far, I have only the Mets, but may be some one else can come up w/ a few others. The Blue Jays now.
  13. Does anyone have Miggys and Mannys OBP and VORP splits for the past 5 seasons?
  14. So does anyone else think this will be the first of 2 moves? If it goes through, The Cubs keep Bedard, and trade Tejada to the Red Sox along with CPat, or Murton for Manny and cash. Then maybe putting a package together for Zito, or try and sign Weaver. Thoughts?
  15. You dont think the Cubs could be making a trade, to make another trade do you? Get Bedard and Miggy, then spin Miggy and CPat to Boston for Manny? As the Sox need a CF, and a SS.
  16. Since Jim is hell bent on trading Prior, I would rather trade him to Boston for Manny and keep Cedeno at short.
  17. I still cant believe that they are even CONSIDERING trading Prior. Blows my mind.
  18. Manny just isn't realistic at this point for a lot of reasons, not the least of which being that there isn't nearly enough payroll left to assimiliate that contract. I think a lot of people would rather have Manny, but it's a pipe dream at best. It might be, but for Manny, I think they might expand the payroll a little. Hendry basically had a blank check for Furcal according to Levine. And Mad Dog will come off the books after this season. A little? It would have to be at least 10 million, IIRC. Plus I think he could demand a trade after next season, and probably would. And then there's the fact that Boston would want a big bat in return, which we can't give them (if you trade ARam or Lee, acquiring Manny doesn't really make us any better). And there's also the fact that Hendry wants guys who can catch the the ball, and Manny is a butcher. All in all, I think the Cubs trading for Manny is about as unlikely a move as you are going to see, IMO. I can dream cant I? Every time I think about a Lee, Ramirez, Ramirez middle of the order I get chills. =P~ Sure, but if we're talking about a dream scenario, you could do better than Manny. Cabrera wont be traded, Pujols wont be traded, ARod wont be traded, Vlad wont be traded, Manny is the only one in that group that could be traded, or at least is requesting one. I get your point though. I'm just sayin that its the only PLAUSABLE dream. With Manny being "shopped" and all. Did I leave anyone else off your list?

  21. Tejada is cheaper, Youner, and plays a position far harder to find talent at. That being said, I wouldnt give prior away for either of them. I understand where you're coming from Roast, but if we could keep Cedeno, I think he will be not a Super-Star SS, but a very good one. All he has to do is get on base. He seems pretty good with the glove too, IMO. If I had a vote, I would keep Mark, but I dont. Just trying to throw out some ideas, besides I just think Manny would mash balls at Wrigley. The guy is what 32 or 33? With 3 years left on his contract? I really dont think you could go wrong. The only think Tejada brings to the table that Manny does not, is a good leader clubhouse mentality. Which can be huge. But man can Manny produce.
