  1. how do you live knowing you are so wrong Make your case. I'm listening. well it's a waste of breath arguing opinions, but I didn't want Skynyrd to win the first round much less this one. I think they are a niche, hillbilly band who have been idolized by the NASCAR crowd. Now they are a travelling cover band Rampant generalizations about a band's fanbase are: 1 - illogical 2 - irrelevant. Secondly, just because they can be classified as "Southern Rock" doesn't mean that they weren't excellent musicians and rock artists. And lastly, as OleMissCub has repeatedly pointed out, any Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crash doesn't really count as Lynyrd Skynyrd, and so has nothing to do with this voting.
  2. there is peter gabriel genesis and then the crap afterward. neither of these bands is anything special. I'm with you. Post-Peter Gabriel Genesis is AWFUL. And they weren't even that great with Peter Gabriel. Also, Keith Moon gets my vote as best drummer ever, and Pete Townshend is no slouch in the guitar department.
  3. I feel very conflicted about this one - I have a lot of love for both of these bands. Both of them have created songs that have taken on mythic quality in their awesomeness. But the redneck in me won out. I voted Skynyrd, mostly cause Queen's lesser stuff is really, really atrocious. Plus three guitars is AWESOME.
  4. I'm not a huge fan of either of these bands, but I think Metallica's better anthems put them over the top.
  5. This one's probably the hardest that I've voted on so far. I was gonna go Eagles because of the sheer number of good songs they've had, but then I remembered the level of lame-itudinousness of so many of their big hits. I voted Police.
  6. Awesome. But dare I say you fumbled a bit in your verb usage, Carlos Zambrano simply "is". Not to be a grammar nerd, but she actually said it right the first time. "Things" is the subject, so "are" is correct.
  7. I'm pretty sure it's not that people disagree with the statement that you've quoted (although Hendry did say more than that). I think it's much more that people object to what Hendry's comments reveal about his stance on the importance of patience and walks.
  8. I could just be imagining it, but it also seemed to me that Murton's slide in production coincided pretty closely with the article that said that Clines and Baker were trying to get Murton to be more aggressive. And there was an article at the end of last season (I forget who wrote it) that demonstrated that Murton was actually getting better against right-handed pitching; i.e., that he was adjusting all on his own. I really do believe that, at least in part, the coaching has had a significant impact on Murton's decrease in production. I hate this entire coaching staff.
  9. No offense to MustangMike at all, but MODS, can we be consistent here. We couldn't use Sam ME, we couldn't use K and Patt, can we not allow posters to use Dumpster? If the previous two were juvenile, so is Dumpster. As I think goony said pretty well, it wasn't so much about the names themselves, as it was the sheer frequency of use. If "Dumpster" becomes a problem, we'll address it. Also, in the future, it's probably best to PM a mod with these type of concerns, as it can be missed in the middle of a thread. Also, "dumpster" is an actual word in addition to being a nickname.
  10. The Red Sox are the big one, since I was born in Boston. But I have lots that I sort of like: The Mets, cause my uncle, who introduced me to baseball, was a Mets fan; the Indians, cause I think they're awesome; and the Braves, cause I grew up in the southeast, where it's basically the Braves or nothing. The Cubs are the only ones I follow with any regularity, though. The others are mostly just teams that I like to see do well.
  11. These two statements are not mutually exclusive - it's certainly plausible (even probable) that Dusty's overuse contributed to Prior's injury problems, but that doesn't mean that Prior's value is only going to decline. Trading Prior is only a good idea if the right deal comes along, because unless we can be absolutely certain that he is completely and permanently ruined, what he can contribute to this team is of greater value than anything you're likely to get for him right now.
  12. I liked some of the ideas, but not all of them. Trading Jacque is my favorite. Sell high, see if you can get something worthwhile for him. I'm also a big fan of not using Neifi, and while I don't want Pie batting leadoff, I definitely have no problems getting rid of Pierre - I'd like to trade him before the deadline, for anything. However - I don't think trading Prior is a no-brainer. If the right deal came along, then he should be traded. But just trading him for the sake of trading him is full-blown moronic. His value is at its lowest right now, and his potential to contribute is enormous. Plus, he's not costing us too much money, so there's very little reason to trade him.
  13. I just showed up, and there are two things of note: Carlos Marmol is on, and that's cool and JUAN PIERRE HIT A HOMER! That's ridiculous. I'm also sort of enjoying the fact that it's currently the only run on the board.
  14. Sounds like he was robbed of a double. Well, still.
  15. So wait a second. Blanco was robbed of a 3-run jack? Is that what you're telling me?
  16. I've never been comfortable with the idea of Wood in the bullpen, for a number of reasons: One, if he's healthy enough to pitch, I want him in the rotation. If he's not, then he shouldn't be pitching at all. Two, if you remember, Wood has had a lot of difficulty with the first inning in the past, especially last year and 2004. It often takes him a while to settle down. That's completely inexcusable if he's in the bullpen, as he'd probably only pitch one inning anyway. Three, he's been taking a while to warm up - and has for at least a couple years now. That's not something you want in a reliever. You want someone who can get warmed up and ready to pitch at the drop of a hat. Wood is definitely not like that.
  17. Two points: 1, remember that Haren is in the AL, whereas Mulder is in the NL. So the disparity between their performance since the trade is even wider than it looks at first. 2, if you only get one stat, then ERA may be the best way to look at a pitcher (although that's certainly up for debate - there are lots of others which I think are probably just as useful - OPS against being just one), in the same way that OPS is the best for batters, if you only get one. Tangentially, OPS is actually, in my mind, a pretty stupid stat. It's like taking, say, home runs and stolen bases and adding them together and saying that it's meaningful. The biggest reason it gets used so much is its simplicity - it's a helpful shorthand, but that's about it. I'd much rather just get the OBP and SLG separately.
  18. Vance, I know you said you were pretty much sticking to players who are free agents at the end of the year, but what does everyone think of trading Jones at the deadline? If he continues hitting like he is right now, then he could fetch a pretty penny at the deadline from a team who felt they had to have a strong outfield bat to contend. And despite his current good play, I'm still not a huge fan of that three year contract, and the fact that, right now, at his very hottest, Jacque's OBP is still an unspectacular .343. I think he's one of the few players who, if we wait until the deadline, might actually net us something very nice. Of course, that would leave our already putrid offense in a state of even further disarray, but then, when Jacque Jones is an irreplaceable offensive cornerstone, you don't have a chance anyway. What do you guys think?
  19. .....which is pretty much a gaurantee that we get blown out. And who ever heard of the Cubs running the opposing pitcher's pitch count up?
  20. God I wish this was true.
  21. I think that no matter what happens to the Cardinals this year, there is absolutely no hope for the Cubs' season.
  22. Nicely played. I'm hoping I'm not the only one who got the reference. :-k  I don't get it. There's no shame in that, but you should still either read or see a good production of the play: Waiting for Godot.
  23. I was gonna lay claim to this one. I'm not actually left handed...and I don't even pitch that well right handed...but I'm even worse at hitting, and pretty bad in the field too. But man I love baseball, so I've gotta be involved, and I figure this is where I can do the least damage.
  24. This easily wins the award for mixed-metaphor post of the decade.
