  1. First off, this post is not trying to defend Zambrano - he certainly has his issues (personally, I think he's nastier to his teammates than to his opponents, but whatever). BUT - I think the Pujols/Zambrano comparison is way off here. For the most part, when Zambrano celebrates, it's exactly that - celebration. He's not trying to "show up" anybody. While he obviously does do this on occasion when he's really pissed off (Jim Edmonds, anybody?), he's more often than not just really pumped up after getting out of a jam, or making a particularly important or good play (this seemed to be the case in his last start). This incident with Pujols was a particularly exaggerated attempt to intentionally show Perez up - he was not just celebrating an important home run. These are two very different things.
  2. Um, not to be a contrarian, but I don't really think Zambrano has "grown up" any since last year, and I don't think his anger is what makes him a goo pitcher. In fact, he usually pitches his worst when he's frustrated. I think, more than anything, I want the Zambrano that can control where he puts the ball back, whether he's grown up or not.
  3. So in looking at Florida's lineup, their first four are actually very, very good - that's a formidable front four in any lineup. What makes them struggle as a team is the rest of the lineup is terrible. And, predictably, all the damage they've done has been with those first four. Not sure if this contributes anything, just something I noticed.
  4. Yeah. Walks are generally never good. But if you're gonna walk someone in this lineup, Cabrera's the one to choose.
  5. No we didnt get that far, we will get to see him ground out at the begining of the next inning. Im really looking forward to it. No kidding. The anticipation is killing me. Not to worry, though. Once he gets up to the plate, he won't waste any time making us wait for it.
  6. Murton's plus Ramirez's ABs: 17 pitches. Barrett's plus Jones' ABs: 4 pitches.
  7. Cause they swing at every durn pitch, that's why! Urgh.
  8. This one at bat is nearly half of Vargas' pitch count so far.
  9. I agree with everyone who says that it's better to see Neifi in the bottom of the order. But still - when does Hairston get to play? He's pretty good with the glove, and is a much, much better hitter than Neifi (not that that says much). And to cap it all off, Neifi is cold right now anyway. Hairston desperately needs some starts.
  10. Well I think it's useful b/c teams have to stress middle-relief less, b/c they can keep their starters in the game since they don't have to pull them for a bat when they're behind, and it can help keep players fresh I like the fact that middle relief is part of the game, especially now that the Cubs have a strong bullpen. The DH takes a lot of the strategy and thinking out of the game, with the DH you might as well call it beer league softball. This is certainly true, which is why I think Dusty should go to the AL. But I'm still totally against the DH, in any league. There's just nothing I can do about it in the AL.
  11. I wish he could find a rod of +2 intelligence. Can I just say that this was incredible? And yes...I got it too. And part of me is with XZero - I should have no shame. But then . . . I do, whether I want to or not.
  12. Okay - a manager and his team trying to throw off a pitcher who's cruising through their lineup is one thing, and I guess okay, even if it is a bit tacky. But to repetitively insinuate that the pitcher is cheating is downright classless. And if TLR was only doing it to "mess with Maddux's head," I have even less respect for him. If he was just whining about being owned by Maddux, that's just him being a sore loser, which, while laffable, is no big deal. But calling a player's integrity into question multiple times, even after the ball has been inspected and shown to be clean, for the sole purpose of messing with him, is something to be ashamed of.
  13. This is true. However, I'd have a much easier time buying into the notion of clutch pitching than clutch hitting, for a number of reasons - the (seeming) existence of a "closer mentality" or something like it; the fact that pitching, being less reactive in nature than hitting, might be more significantly affected by mental state, etc. Although I would bet that a clutch pitcher is not one who pitches better than usual in pressure situations, but one who merely pitches at his usual level in those situations, not allowing the pressure to get to him. We've all seen a pitcher fall apart when things start getting a little ugly for him: losing control, making bad pitches, all that jazz (Zambrano comes to mind, although I think that's as often due to fatigue as anything else). The "clutch" pitcher, if there is such a thing, is probably (in my mind) one who doesn't let this happen. Then again, this is all speculation.
  14. Or how many times did they ask to see the ball, rather?
  15. How many times did they accuse us of cheating? And I agree with Barrett - that's totally classless.
  16. Um...why did Baker pinch hit for Walker there? Mabry's a lefty too, and Walker's numbers aren't abysmal against lefties or anything. I sometimes feel Baker just feels like robbing Walker of as many at bats as possible.
  17. Neifi continues his spectacular display of incompetence.
  18. according to gameday, both Ramirez's and Barrett's shots were about as far as they could go and still be in the park? Is that true?
  19. Cedeno hit a triple on a first pitch. Second pitch, but the point still stands, I guess.
  20. That was the best offense we're gonna see all game.
  21. I hate watching on gameday. But I still do. Isn't that sad?
  22. Eckstein walked? Now but the two guys before him did. without Eckstein's single that run doesn't score What's your point? Without the walks. No one's on base. wrong, Eckstein's on base Um, not true. Without the walks, the inning is over before Eckstein even comes up. Remember, walks are good not just because they get someone on base, but because they don't create outs. Some people overlook that.
  23. Eckstein walked? Now but the two guys before him did. without Eckstein's single that run doesn't score Without either of the walks, the run doesn't score. They contributed just as much, if not more, to that run than the single.
  24. It's not even May, and our season already feels like a farce. That's incredible.
