  1. harping on home-road splits is dumb and people should have learned that with Khalil Greene and Matt Holliday
  2. i didn't include him because my dream isn't really to gamble $30m/per on his age 34-43 seasons or whatever length it'll take to sign him
  3. When Vitters is ready, he'll take over third. I don't really see much of a realistic scenario where either Lee or Starlin are a regular third baseman. As has been mentioned, just not enough power potential. If everybody pans out, the likely 2014 infield is Vitters (3B), HJ Lee (SS), Starlin (2B), ? (1B). My dream 2014 infield would be Lake (3B), HJ Lee (SS), Starlin (2B), Fielder/Gonzalez (1B) fixed.
  4. Doesn't FIP favor pitchers that pitch to contact? His .337 BABIP suggests that he gets hit pretty hard. To add on to what Tim said, Wells gives up very few HR for someone who supposedly gets pretty hard. And even all things included, he's got a 3.41 ERA in nearly 300 MLB innings, so it's not like he's got a great FIP and is still giving up tons of runs. he really doesn't get his just due
  5. you don't even have to take my word for it
  6. please don't assume that anything he says is based in any well thought-out plan he's easily the dumbest-sounding ballplayer i've ever heard talk, and that's including Vitters
  7. this is an even better narrative, Starlin's gonna get all wise with him about the 3 games at third or whatever it was he did that somehow made the scenarios different "i was looking at your bb-ref page, you can't trick me, Methuselah"
  8. what's really ironic about the whole thing is that if the situation does come to fruition, ultimately the guy who's (most likely) going to be asking Castro to move is someone who did the same exact thing himself and became arguably the best 2B of all time in doing so
  9. here's hoping Niemi handles the hearing better than Tommy Salo did...
  10. yeah i know, it seems like, whenever that happens, the player has a 46 HR season
  11. Derrek Lee Lee litterally fell into Hendry's lap. Who knows what Choi's career would hve looked like had Baltimore been able to work out an extension. Plus, even if the Cubs didn't have Choi they would have gotten Lee. was our system rife with highly touted mlb-ready 1B prospects Baltim-er, Florida could have plugged in right away to replace Lee? (no)

  13. i was referring to Chipper Jones the MVP moving to LF (and threatening his HOF status) for Vinny Castilla (oh, please, please try to argue this one as a defensive necessity) there probably wasn't a precedent for that exact set of criteria, either
  14. It's quite different. He was in his 30s and really bad fielding the position. He also spent most of his time not playing SS before then. Castro is much younger has almost exclusively played SS and presumably will be quite good at it at the time of a move possibly happening. They are not similar situations. Young had to move, and it was convenient they had a guy to fill the spot. Castro should not have to move. i love this narrative. like the Rangers approached Young and said "you're really terrible at fielding, guy" and he's all like "i had no idea, tell me what i must do!"
  15. why does it have to be SS, that's dumb what's going to make Castro more recalcitrant to move than established stars like Chipper Jones, Cabrera, Young, Soriano were?
  16. http://scratchbomb.com/images/bobby%2Bvalentine.jpg
  17. i wasn't really suggesting that the two situations would be analogous down to every solitary last element
  18. oh i had. it's still not very often that a player ever has a season like he had last year and then goes on to be useful in the majors.
  19. even an .800 would be a welcome surprise
  20. uh...he probably just forgot he was playing for a contract, i'm thinking
  21. the Rangers made Michael Young switch positions twice to make room for unproven young guys and he was sort of the face of the franchise it wasn't a real big deal, and shouldn't be a big deal for Castro to move to 2nd if need be
  22. i was sort of interested in Beltre given the year he's having, until i realized/noticed he's hit .334/.382/.598 his two contract years and .266/.317/.442 the rest of his career this is very good news
