  1. Dave Cameron's take on bb-ref vs. fangraphs WAR:
  2. not if you're josh vitters
  3. yup, that was the case. Kevin Jones was awesome that year too, and Forte's pretty nasty, if we're trying to make comparisons. Taylor starting would probably be a big upgrade to the offense
  4. i'd probably rather avoid Dunn and hold out hope that we can sign Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder, even Pujols Pena or Berkman shouldn't be a real humongous downgrade for 11 in which we'll struggle to contend regardless, and both should come pretty affordable on a Beltre-type prove-yourself deal
  5. Andres Torres? This is why I hate defensive metrics. he's also 2nd in batting runs amongst all CFs in baseball, trailing Carlos Gonzalez by the slimmest of margins – also of note, he's virtually equivalent to Crawford, Wright and Braun by the same measure as an aside, looking at WAR, "We-should-have-signed" Carlos Lee has been the single worst player in baseball, amongst guys who qualify for the batting title. factoring salary, he's been worth -$22M to Houston this season
  6. if there's a Packer fan, i'd try trading Grant for a better #2 WR at least one of Best/Foster is likely better, anyway
  7. is he that far off? http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=fld&lg=al&qual=1200&type=1&season=2010&month=11
  8. it belongs in the top-1 of the entire league for the past three years his slider is third overall in total pitch value, behind only Ervin Santana and Dempster, both of whom have thrown it at a much lower efficiency
  9. Opinions on Colvin are all over the board. His offensive skills are quite likely being underrated by the crowd that has already written him off as nothing but a funamentally flawed career 4th OF. what are his offensive skills, though? specifically, what does he do that's reliably repeatable? i'd argue that the list is pretty much limited to only bad things
  10. having both best baserunner and fastest baserunner in there is sorta dumb, since managers don't know the difference between the two things Rolen and JD Drew would probably be tops if they understood the distinction, i'm guessing
  11. Beltran was one of my biggest disappointments, i had visions of him closing for awhile that "splitter from hell"
  12. i was pretty shocked and delighted he didn't have to undergo TJS, it seemed like a near-certainty with everything that happened good day for relievers, it'd be great to get some of the Smit, Maine, Harris types into our bullpen and contributing soon
  13. do it, i actually like Best, Wells, Foster as much, if not more, than some of the early round RBs try to get Mike Wallace, Britt, Nicks late
  14. and he was just 23 in retrospect it looks like a terrible rant
  15. He's very good, but I still don't agree with your conspiracy theory that they were benching him for an "inferior player" last year. That guy would be Carlos Gonzalez. yeah that was when Gonzo wasn't doing so hot. well, in that case frantic raving over the situation was warranted how was anybody supposed to know he would become a great player if he wasn't already good???
  16. there's not any upside to it, other than increasing your draft position i guess – not anywhere he can fit himself in the rotation even if he surprises his near-5.5 bb/9 is just a recipe for an overworked bullpen though
  17. did Torres lose a leg? were the Dodgers and Brewers contracted? they aren't even close
  18. all this lunacy aside, Bryan Smith of fangraphs took a few Cubs questions [Comment From JeremyJeremy: ] Thoughts on Chris Archer? How far has he jumped up both the Cubs and national prospect lists? Bryan Smith: A ton. Check out his numbers since April 30. Insane. [Comment From BrianBrian: ] Shouldn't Andrew Cashner be in the minors as a starter? Bryan Smith: ABSOLUTELY.
  19. Longoria has the most team-beneficial contract in baseball; of course an extension for Castro would be worthy of consideration, if it's at all possible
  20. the red sox? My dad got me into the Cubs, music got me into Boston (The city's got an amazing hardcore scene). i root for the Jazz cuz i like saxophones the Blues too!
  21. he has a higher OPS (and SLG) than Hanley. including his AA MLE, he's at .317/.363/.464 on the year, with 28 BB to 52 K and 40 XBH in 388 AB ...at 20. he's awesome.
  22. i've seen keener, and it wasn't pretty
