    he's a great penetrator, passer, can rebound well for a PG, but his jump shot needs work

    since we're going to be a bad team for the immediate future anyway i'm more than fine leaving him at SS to see if he improves, but early returns are moderately troubling looking at RZR: for the past two seasons, amongst the 23 qualifying SS, he's the 3rd worst at making plays in his zone (more or less "routine" plays) but he's in the top third for % of his plays made out of zone, which would suggest he's got poor instincts and good athleticism. that's already the perception about him, but the fielding data also backs that up UZR considers him a -6 SS to this point, which is actually fairly promising, all things considered, but TotalZone paints the grimmest picture, labeling Castro a -17 fielder thus far if you believe the latter is the more reliable of the two metrics, then there's little chance he can stay at short long-term without being a considerable detriment

    Cedeno had a nine-year prime of .293/.362/.467 where he averaged 29 2B, 16 HR, 49 SB (131 games) to go with 5 GGs in CF and 5 top-25 MVP finishes, before injuries marginalized him Trout's upside exceeds that only for duration, if he's actually able to sustain health over his career, which not many stud CFs are able to do he could just as easily flame out early like Erstad

    i'm having trouble thinking of (m)any players who fared noticeably better defensively, relative to their peers, in switching from 3B to OF Miggy Cabrera, Chipper Jones, Kevin Mitchell and Bonilla's defensive statistics all suffered significantly from the switch, and Braun and Sheffield slightly improved to just 'really bad' in the OF from 'historically awful' fielders at 3B, and Pujols and Bautista stayed virtually the same i guess Teahen improved by a reasonable amount, but he likely possessed better athleticism than all the aforementioned guys

    ok, i should have stated "by all accounts, struggles to play capable defense" he needs a HUGE completely unforeseen growth spurt in terms of offensive production to deserve that comparison, offensively; Aramis consistently had .100 isoD seasons in the minors, not .040, to go along with an OPS a full 160 pts higher than Vitters

    even Vitters' ceiling isn't very valuable we already know for sure he'll never walk, and can't play plus defense at 3B, and doesn't have huge power so, even imagining he can post .300/.365/.480 lines and play -5 defense, we're still just talking a 2.5-3 win player at best more likely, imo, he's a -10 fielder at 3B and hits something like .280/.320/.440, struggling to average 1 win a year; if he shifts to 1B, he's a bench player for us

    i have admiration for the way their FO does business, but they got so unbelievably lucky with Youkilis and especially Ortiz, namely in the way they somehow happened upon prolific power strokes Ortiz was signed to be [expletive] Jeremy Giambi's backup, so you'll excuse me if i only award them partial credit for that one; still, i'll concede you can't strike gold like that when you play it safe with the Reed Johnsons of the world all the time
