  1. Yeah, I'd hope that the max bid is high enough to where we'd be willing to pay it but the three clubs below us wouldn't. I can't see the Japanese clubs settling for a $20 million dollar max posting bid unless there's other money coming from somewhere else to supplement that.
  2. I imagine Hoyer will be all over it since he traded for Webb when with the Padres.
  3. It's too bad we can't trade a legion of AAAA players + cash to Tohoku Rakuten for Tanaka straight up.
  4. Pretty funny to compare his comments about the Cubs farm system v.s the Astros He says a lot of great things about our young guys since Kris Bryant is one of his clients.
  5. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mlb-withdrawing-proposal-japan-bidding-182330373--mlb.html So who knows if they'll actually agree on a deal or not.
  6. Bryant 2-3 with a 2 doubles and a walk thus far today (2 innings left to go) Almora 3-3 with a double
  7. http://wgnradio.com/2013/11/07/new-cubs-manager-rick-renteria-joins-kap/ "Ricky Renteria" did an impressive job handling Kaplan's dumb questions. I think the meatballs are going to end up liking him.
  8. so is new manager worthy of a new thread... or will this turn into the "dumb Rick Renteria managing decisions" thread for 2014?
  9. Soler 3rd, Bryant 4th tonight.
  10. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-new-national-tv-contracts-and-2014-payrolls/ Basically every team seems to be getting an extra $25 million each year from the new national TV deals that kick in next year, so that's probably where this sudden "payroll bump!!" rumor is coming from. I guess it'll be good if Ricketts spends nearly all of it on the team instead of pocketing half of it, but that extra money won't go as far as a normal year since everyone's going to have a little more to spend. Fangraphs has our payroll obligations at $58 million for 2014, for what it's worth.
  11. Almora leading off, Darvill 8th today.
  12. Bryant 3rd, Soler 6th, Almora 7th today.
  13. Bryant batting 3rd, Soler 5th today.
  14. So we need to hire Jim Cornette as one of our coaches and he can teach our up and coming prospects how to unleash their natural charisma. Then we will be rolling in the cash with our likeable team, Cubs talk will dominate ESPN like Yankees, Lakers, and Tebow combined due to our charismatic personalities, Wrigley is full of people wanting to see baseball's version of the Beatles and Elvis combined, TV ratings spike, agents beat down TheoJed's door to get in on the endorsement deal gravy train and even Scott Boras is giving us discounts on players. I like that plan.
  15. Apparently he's going to be back Thursday/Friday, so not a big deal considering it seemed like the Cubs players were playing every other game anyway.
  16. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/20384/qa-cubs-prospect-kris-bryant Bryant Q&A from ESPN Chicago
  17. trade Theo for Maddon straight up, then Theo trades himself and David Price back to Chicago for Jackson and Vitters.
  18. I still don't understand why college baseball coaches are never brought up in these discussions. If managing is just personality management, instruction/development and just reading the stats and making the right moves, plenty of college coaches could do that much more effectively than just another retread. The best college coach available would probably be better than most of the MLB guys and a safer bet (and they would probably come much cheaper). Coaches in the NFL and NBA get respect even if they haven't played in the NFL/NBA. Baseball's baseball, especially with the new bats in college.
  19. Looks like Ricketts is opening up the wallet to try to get Girardi http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-1007-cubs-chicago-20131007,0,4360962.story
  20. Are you going to let him do what he wants to do to you? Take one for the team. lol, just caught that and changed it.
  21. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/23968031/report-cubs-ownership-intends-to-make-joe-girardi-a-significant-offer Seems like things are going to hinge on what Girardi wants to do.
  22. Probably better for him to undersell it considering the rest of the Chicago media is going to ridiclously overhype it (and then turn on the prospects when they start struggling a bit).
  23. It's worth kicking the tires on Gonzalez for sure but I wouldn't give up Bryant or Baez for him. Of course if I'm the Rockies I'd probably insist on it. I guess that would be an offseason trade, so Almora and Soler will have a chance to perform well in the Fall League & show they're over their injuries.
  24. that one goes in the lists of Take Me Out to the Ballgame trainwrecks =D>
  25. More ABs for Castro/Rizzo to get out of their funk
