  1. Why was Kearns' production not sustainable? Maybe he really is that good and injuries + platooning killed his stats. A .370 BABIP is sustainable. It puts him in the top 20% in that category, but it is sustainable. DLee's BABIP was at .430 in late June (not sure about now) and was definitely an outlier. The next highest BABIP was .395 (in June).
  2. I thought those trade talks had all but died in the last few days. :? Well, at least that would get a solid pitcher out of the NL. :)
  3. How is his fielding? I realize you can't tell this from a box score unless there is something glaring like an error, but I'd really like to know if anyone sees him in person. :D Thanks.
  4. You have to wonder when you read that stuff...are Cinci fans so much more intelligent than the Reds' management? Apparently not.
  5. sweeeeeeeeeeeeet emotiooonnnnn  hopefully you are referring to the poster on the ESP board as I in now way stated I knew anything about a deal happening. I was just passing along info I seen on another board. Info that others here would have seen sooner or later anyway. In addition, the proposed trade has already been in the paper as being disussed, so it's not like it's anything new. I believe it's probably BS to. But all rumors ar until they happen. no, i wasn't ragging on you, just making fun of the rumors that fly fast and furious around the trade deadline. sweetemotion was the guy who passed on the dunn trade rumor from his "source," on NSBB the other day. it's one thing to pass info and note that it is a rumor and another to pass off info from some mysterious "source" that is somehow in the know when no one else is (you being the former case  ).
  6. How does getting LF help prevent improving the bullpen?
  7. I'd say an average whip would be around 1.3 or so. league average for SP: WHIP 1.38 ERA 4.34 Just thought i'd throw those numbers out there. I realize league average is different than a "good" WHIP or comparing it to a 3.00 ERA...not sure how to compare the two.
  8. I'd rather have Kearns playing over Murton, but I wouldn't deal Murton. I'd definitely give up prospects for Kearns, especially since we can't seem to produce our own position players. Obviously it would depend on the prospects, but Kearns would be a solid addition. Back to the original question...i'd take Murton over Dunn for now just b/c Cinci doesn't seem to want to make any reasonable offers for Dunn. We can nab him next time around. Did anyone else notice Dunn's body language in LF? He must love Cinci.
  9. when calculating WHIP, do you include HBP along with BB? It would seem to make sense as WHIP is supposed to give you an idea of the number of baserunners a pitcher lets on base. i doubt exluding/including HBP in the calculation of WHIP would make a huge numerical difference.
  10. How do you predict a win out of those match-ups? :? It looks like the Cards should win handily from those numbers. Just wondering.
  11. oh, man, why hasn't anyone suggested this yet?? brilliant!! seriously, don't you think that if it was something this simple, they'd have done it by now? and i seriously doubt that wood is enjoying these trips to the DL...i'm sure he's 100 times more frustrated than the fans. of course, no matter how many times a level headed person makes a post like this, there will still be 100 other people who say that wood is a wimp, stubborn, stupid, etc...so why do i bother?? it's not a matter of difficulty. any major league caliber pitcher has the ability to change their mechanics. it's a matter of taking the time to fix them and convincing the player to stay with the changes instead of falling back on old habits. why do you bother? i have no idea. maybe you shouldn't. :)
  12. Eventually? More like currently. is money really a problem? are we not getting players b/c of money? the only example i can think of is Clement. i don't think anyone is happy that innings eater left our club. well, other than all of Boston. another possibility is Beltran, who is so overrated and overpaid, he's not even worth using as an argument that Kerry is too expensive.
  13. I couldn't believe my eyes when Maddux swung away into the DP in the fifth. Why not try a squeeze, or at least show bunt there? Anything to put pressure on the defense. One poor Cub fan in my section upon seeing Baker's complete lack of creativity jumped up, did a dance and slapped his head. He was an older gent presumably fed up with spending his waning days watching Dusty ruin the lives of several million Cub fans. Why pull Maddux in the sixth? The weather was unbearable, but Maddux hadn't pushed himself much, and he had a relatively low pitch count. The pen needs work, sure, but if that's true why go there when we didn't have to? Starting the eighth with Novoa and no one stirring in the pen was an unbelieveably optimistic choice. The kid did well to get out of the seventh ... why push it? Walking Griffey in the eighth was stupid. Kearns has been hitting well at Louisville, was salivating at the chance to contribute and has been a Cub killer since coming up. Everyone in the park saw his hit coming ... I make Griffey beat me. Not to mention the fact that had we gone into extras we'd have done so with a lineup double-switched into oblivion with Neifi and Macias up to their old tricks. Baker's prints were all over Wednesday's loss as well. The criminal misuse of the pen has been covered, but there's no way Harang goes nine if this club had any notion of how to work a pitcher. Baker tells the guys to go up there a hackin', and by God that's what they did ... all freaking night, even when Harang was on the ropes late. Dusty is an idiot. Maddux was about to bonk. He started "seeing little white things." When you are working hard in the heat like that with no energy, your vision is one of the first things to go. Eventually you go from white spots to a blurry white haze...then it gets worse. maddux was done. it also explains why he swung at some of those pitches...one was 3 feet off the plate up and away. freaking cincinatti weather. :x other than that, i don't disagree with anything you said. dusty is a baffoon.
  14. i love the ball that kearns put up the middle during yesterday's game. range does matter. cedeno knocks that ball down at the very least. i don't mean to rag on Neifi. i think he is next to worthless, but every team has those types of players. he was never intended to start this many games. dusty is the idiot who keeps trying to hammer the square peg into the round hole.
  15. It absolutely baffles me that he keeps getting injured. If it is his mechanics, fix them. His delivery will change and he may be less effective (or maybe even more effective), but at least he'll make his starts. I love Wood and I don't want to see him traded (which is unlikely in any event), but I want to see him pitch for bleep's sake.
  16. I'd rather have Kearns over Dunn, although they are both studs.
  17. Remlinger needs to be sold off to get Dempster a new bike.
  18. We need relief help by the trading deadline. Not Dunn. A good bullpen would have saved the game. We need a LF'er. Murton is hitting well, but Dusty refuses to play him against righties. Holly is below average. Same with Gerut. In my eyes LF is a want. This team can score more than 4 runs a game which should be enough to yield a win on most days. The priority should be in stabilizing middle relief. If our pitchers can't go 7 we're most likely in big trouble. yup, a LF doesn't score us the runs needed to win that ballgame. the right reliever stuck in at the right time (dusty, you genius) does.
  19. Why even make the playoffs with a crappy bullpen? Your starters don't have enough in them to run the table. The bullpen is a must fix if we ever want to do anything in the playoffs, much less make the playoffs. A manager that knows how to use the pen would be nice too.
  20. this ump has killed us. he squeezes novoa and then calls a low strike on DLee. garbage.
