  1. might as well go cheap. Just sign guys who were good five years ago, or who never were good (Abraham Nunez, Tony Womack) and watch the results roll in! You beat me to the punch. Why go high end when they continue to go reasonably cheap and win the division every year? Is it LaRussa, lousy competition, or a combination of both? They do get lucky on players however this is partly due to the fact that they're willing a throw a bunch of players at a problem to see if something sticks. You guys mention a lot of their successes however they've also had their fair share of failures - Ponson, Bigbie and Spivey to name a few. In general, the Cards are willing to have uncertainty at a position going in to a season in order to see what pans out then trying to fix problems around the trade deadline rather than of wasting resources on a "proven" name. The Cards payroll will be a little over 100m this year, I think. I expect them to make a run at Belliard, Mulder and Suppan
  2. MLB said they would step in if anything like that happened. Also, the Red Sox have a strong need for starting pitching. They really could use Matsuzaka. If MLB determined that the Red Sox have no real intentions of signing Matsuzaka would he go back to Japan or would the team that had the second highest bid have the opportunity to sign him. The team with the second highest bid will have the opportunity to sign him.
  3. 2 years @ 18 mil with lots of deferred money. They also avoid paying a 3m buyout.
  4. I don't share this opinion. Other teams might have more to offer, but that doesn't mean they will be willing to offer it. The best prospects usually never even enter the discussion for trades. Somebody mentioned Pie and Murton, and that's a huge haul for any team. An already above average major league hitter looking to improve, and a high ceiling very young talent is more than most teams would offer for most players. I agree with goony. Pie and Murton are a lot to give up and likely more than many other teams would offer, but not necessarily could offer. However, that's also more than I would offer. I don't like Willis enough to give up Pie to get him, much less Murton and Pie. Considering the contract Zito is about to get I think it'd take more than Pie and Murton. There just isn't a lot of cheap pitching out there. BTW, Willis might be overrated but he's still a very good young pitcher who had stretches of dominance.
  5. I certainly would. Most of you guys on here are awesome fans and deserve a championship. Last night I made an ill advised post in the game thread. It wasn't meant to rub it in, just an out pouring of emotion. Like thrill said, last night took a lot of frustration and animosity out of baseball for me. I can honestly say I'd root for the Cubs in the playoffs if the Cards aren't in it.
  6. I doubt there would be interest in him by other teams as a starter. Sounds like an emtpy threat.
  7. I feel so good right now!
  8. http://gatewayredbirds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9191 Look at that Michael, people at your site agree with me! Booyah. I'm not saying he can't do it. He just has some work to do.
  9. Not if they're smart they didn't. He should be a starter. Yeah, he should be a starter. I said he would win 15 games next year if he was a starter. Oh god, I'm agreeing with you over something most Cardinals fans think I'm wrong about. Something's wrong. He is more valuable as a starter. Change up plz.
  10. One more reason to root for the Cards.
  11. If the Cards win the whole thing you guys should ban me. I'm going to be even more miserable to be around.
  12. Well that is a foreign substance, I guess.

  14. Taking a 83 win team to the WS will "cement larussa's place in history as one of the worst post-season managers EVER"?
  15. I posted this in another Z thread...
  16. This is my dilemma. Oh shut up. There should be no dilemma for you.
  17. A deeply regrettable wrong
  18. MLB>College baseball NFL>College Football College Basketball>NBA
  19. I doubt the Reds will trade Dunn to an NLC team unless they overpay in a major way.
  20. This may be the most unintentually funny thread title ever.
  21. I'd also throw the Angels and Diamondback in to the mix. That said, I seriously doubt he's going anywhere.
  22. I think you are right. It'd be a great PR move to start the off-season. CFICT, I have to say, that avatar is amazing. I only hope my birthday cake looks like that. God bless PBR. Thanks. Nothing says Happy Birthday like the gift of a bad hangover.
