Why go high end when they continue to go reasonably cheap and win the division every year? Is it LaRussa, lousy competition, or a combination of both? They do get lucky on players however this is partly due to the fact that they're willing a throw a bunch of players at a problem to see if something sticks. You guys mention a lot of their successes however they've also had their fair share of failures - Ponson, Bigbie and Spivey to name a few. In general, the Cards are willing to have uncertainty at a position going in to a season in order to see what pans out then trying to fix problems around the trade deadline rather than of wasting resources on a "proven" name. The Cards payroll will be a little over 100m this year, I think. I expect them to make a run at Belliard, Mulder and Suppan
