  1. Let me go on record as saying I think this is awful. It's starting to become clear that we are after 2nd tier players yet again. Mark DeRosa, Gil Meche and Julio Lugo do not turn a 66 win team into a contender.
  2. The Piniella quote about 3 starters tells me one thing : Big trade coming. Assuming Meche, Marquis and Batista our staff would be (once Prior is back): Zambrano Hill Prior Miller Meche Batista Marquis Marshall Guzman Marmol Aardsma Mateo Wuertz Ohman Howry Eyre Dempster Wood Granted, some of those guys should get more time at Iowa. However, I didn't even include guys like Ryu, Novoa, OMalley and Walrond who will almost certainly be in Iowa. Add them to the list of guys progressing up from AA, and we have a big time logjam. I expect us to get one big free agent hitter and then make a blockbuster.
  3. Exactly. How long have the rest of you been cub fans, anyway?
  4. I wonder how Lou felt about Lugo since he played for him at Tampa? The latest from Rosenthal Then where exactly are we going to spend all this money? Give Lugo 5/55???? I really think they're aiming for a .500 team. Lugo DeRosa Lee Ramirez Jones Murton Barrett Izturis Zambrano 2nd tier FA Hill Prior/Marshall/etc. Miller Yuck. Even if we get Schmidt...Yuck.
  5. I'd do it, but I'd use Hill instead of Prior. He insures that the deal gets done, and we can keep the higher ceiling player. Granted, we'll have to toss Guzman or a mediocre FA into the mix until Prior is ready to go...
  6. And if Colvin becomes a very good, Mark Kotsay type player, who produces for a long time, are you still going to call it a "huge risk", even if the players (some of whom some Cubs fans wanted) never developed into a star? The draft will always be a "Crapshoot" and it doesn't matter the rd. Albert Pujols lasted till the 13th rd. Oswalt and Piazza went further down in the draft, whereas we've seen players like Brien Taylor, Todd Van Poopell, Darren Dreifort become spectualr busts. So, "huge risk" or not, I like the pick, and I fully expect him to win over just about every body here, in the last few yrs. To be fair, Dreifort was wicked, he just got injured.
  7. The only problem with the Petco theory is that his splits aren't that different this year: OBP and slugging .378/.384 at home .369/.410 on the road I'd attribute it to just more of a down year (as his splits were pretty large last year) but I have no idea if he would rebound from that. Any chance that he was just being smart and adjusting to the park?
  8. I'm fine with Theriot at 2nd with EPatt waiting in the wings. I offer Murton, Pie, Marshall and Veal to Florida for Miggy. I then use the money to sign one of the big 3 pitchers and go after Andruw Jones. With 4 #3 hitters in the lineup, we can keep Izturis at short for his glove. Theriot Barrett Cabrera Lee Ramirez Jones Jones Izturis Zambrano Schmidt// Hill Prior Miller If Prior can be healthy by the break, we're favorites to win it all, imo.
  9. I'm really surprised everyone here thinks we have a shot at Drew. He hit .283 with 20 homeruns, in Jim Hendry's world that's a downgrade from Jacque, especially after factoring in injury history and salary demands. Do you really think Hendry is going to do a 180 and put an emphasis on OBP%? There is absolutely no chance that Drew will be a cub.
  10. Look at Hanley Ramirez's last year in the minors. He was floundering in AA at 23. Producing numbers-wise in the minors isn't the best way to evaluate prospects. Yeah, that's my point.
  11. Look at Hanley Ramirez's last year in the minors. He was floundering in AA at 23.
  12. To me, it's pretty obvious that Hendry thinks he is expendable. A contract would have been worked out already if that was not the case. Hendry has overpaid many times for mediocre talent, why would he not meet ARam's request when there is so much more on his plate? He's as good as gone, imo.
  13. I will. Replacing Aramis with either of those two is simply treading water offensively. It will be a huge deal in the media, but we will be improving marginally if at all. It will make us older, however. Hendry didn't trade Ramirez when he could have gotten a boatload for him, now it's time to bite the bullet and give the man his money. The only way i would approve of letting him go is if a deal was in place to get Cabrera. Even then, we still need another bat and we likely have no prospects left.
  14. Watching video of 2003 is about a million times harder than watching video of 2004. At least for me. Yesterday I was reading an ESPN game recap of one of the NLCS games that year, where they mentioned Prior as being the best pitcher in the major leagues, and talked about how much momentum the cubs had. I got choked up and couldn't even continue reading.
  15. So you're saying he'll be our #2 or #3 starter?
  16. You'd probably also have to get another starter after losing Hill or Z in a trade for ARod.
  17. I'm pretty sure most Murton fan's on here (I'm a big one) would give him up if it meant getting a true impact player in left ala Manny or Cabrera. The fact is Murton just played his first full season and hit near .300 with an OPS over .800. He is young, and likely to improve on those numbers next year. He is also very cheap, and we have holes elsewhere. If you have a rotation of Santana, Zambrano, Bedard, Estes, Fassero would upgrading Bedard be a priority? I think any overprotection of Murton that you're noticing is likely due to the fact that the cubs haven't had a young position player put up good numbers since Corey's first half in '03.
  18. CubsWin, I do not doubt you, but can I please have the source for this? I have heard Hendry talk about a "couple of pitchers over there" and other vague references, but have yet to hear him use "bid" and "Matsuzaka" in the same sentence.
  19. Do you realize Zambrano hasn't come close to his ceiling yet? He was top 20 in the league in WHIP while leading the majors in walks. He has a lot of room to improve, and he is already one of the best pitchers in baseball. Having a top 5 ERA in the NL in a down year at his age is pretty incredible.
  20. Just to revisit my own possible trade scenario.... I would really have to give consideration to Z/Dempster for ARod/Hughes. This is predicated on the signing of one of the big three pitchers, and the resigning of ARam. Getting perhaps the best pitching prospect in baseball would certainly lessen the blow. To think how good Zambrano already is, and to know he hasn't reached his ceiling yet is crazy. I think by age 28-29, he could be Pedro-in-his-prime dominant. I just want to win the World Series, and I fear having a mediocre team in 2010 fronted by the best pitcher in baseball. If the salaries are a near wash, we can afford to sign another pitcher AND get Soriano or trade for Andruw, Wells, etc. Theriot 2B Murton LF Lee 1B ARod SS ARam 3B Jones/Soriano/Wells CF Jones RF Barrett C Schmidt Hill Prior Hughes Miller
  21. Would anyone do Zambrano and Dempster for ARod and Philip Hughes? Would anyone do this AFTER we signed Zito, Matsuzaka or Schmidt?
  22. If it takes ARam for Arod, it is not worth it. Over the next five years their numbers will likely be a wash, and ARod is more expensive. A three way deal could make this happen, imo. Cubs get: Arod Marlins get : Pie, Marshall, Guzman Yankees get: Willis, Eyre Or a mega-blockbuster: Yankees get: Willis, Eyre, Prior, Dempster Marlins get: Hughes, Hill, Murton, Pie Cubs get: ARod, Cabrera, Pavano
  23. It's really obvious what the extra 15 million is for, imo. We trade Moore, Veal, Mateo and 15 mil to Florida for Miguel Cabrera, thus covering the ENTIRE FLORIDA PAYROLL! :D Then, in a 3 way deal Cubs get: ARod, cash Yankees get: C.C Sabathia, Ryan Dempster Indians get: Jacque Jones, Sean Marshall, Cesar Izturis Sign Schmidt, call up Pie and we're good! Murton Barrett Cabrera Lee ARam ARod Pie Cedeno Z Schmidt Hill Prior Miller
