  1. I like Campusano, but I wouldn't bet much on him putting up more career value than Amaya. They aren't that far apart offensively to offset the defense. Having them both wouldn't be the worst thing, but I'd prefer to focus on acquiring pitching.
  2. It all goes in to the mix together. If our roster was a giant void, pat Willson on the back and get what you can. If you think he'll come back on a reasonable deal in the offseason, do the same, but there are only a few catchers in the game that aren't a liability on one side of the ball. We have arguably the very best one and, critically, this team has misrepresented how far away it is from contention. Here's some NL position player rankings in fWAR (min. 250 PAs) 11. Nico 15. Willson 23. Happ 38. Morel 55. Wisdom With Suzuki, that's six positions filled more than adequately. The back 3/5 of the rotation should be a strength next season, as well.
  3. If I thought the team was 2011 bad, I'd say let the old guard go. But..... Morel Nico Suzuki Contreras Happ Wisdom Those six could be in the starting lineup of a WS team. Two are over 30. Yes, it needs supplementing. Yes, the rotation needs an ace. Maybe I'm wrong, but if this big market team signed Josh Bell and Joe Musgrove, they would be the favorites in the central. I don't accept that we should pass on those opportunities in favor of the enticing potential of waves and waves. We have a strong farm already. Trade the relievers and make it #1. Then start adding.
  4. You understand the chances of Morel even getting to Wrigley would decrease significantly if Javy was still a Cub right? Sorry, I wasn't very clear. Javy is the most exciting player I've ever seen, he is our household's favorite player, he was integral to winning the WS and I wanted them to extend him. I like Morel. He's cool. Now it's Willson, who I also have strong feelings about. Yes, I might like watching Campusano or whoever in a couple of years but I'd rather stop logjamming guys at South Bend/Myrtle Beach and just go ahead and make another push with the last great player of the most legendary cubs team of all time.
  5. I said this when Javy was traded but my days as a win at all costs, to-hell-with-sentimentality fan are over. It's still ~90%, but they won it all, I was there, and it was more than perfect. I now assign greater value to watching my favorite players play for my favorite team. Even this six game streak on a losing team has been fun because Contreras and Happ are hitting, I get to watch Morel continue to turn into a thing, Keegan, etc. Waves and waves is great in theory, but to keep turning beloved cubs into 45FV dudes in an attempt to make that happen isn't doing it for me anymore.
  6. NL rookies wRC+ (min 75 PAs) 1. P.J. Higgins 2. Christopher Morel 3. Nelson Velazquez 4. Brendan Donovan 5. Seiya Suzuki I am playing games with # of PAs but it's something fun in a dark season
  7. He would get absolutely manhandled by Zach Wheeler tonight, and I don't think that helps anybody. Definitely start him every game against lefties, but I'm fine relegating him to bad righties until he shows he's ready for more. That's a reasonable opinion. I guess I'd just rather he get opportunities in moments when his confidence is likely to be highest.
  8. Playing match ups to what end, though? Getting Ortega or Rivas going? They aren't going to sneak into the playoffs. You are probably right that Velazquez isn't major league ready, but he's a helium guy. As you know, in the AFL he really began changing his trajectory. Seems far more valuable to me to keep throwing him in the fire ala Morel in the hopes that he can keep changing it rather than spreading PAs around to whatever effect.
  9. I swear to god. You're managing a team with a .387 winning percentage and one of your rookies hits two HRs in the first game back from the all star break, so what do you do? David Ross takes him out of the lineup. That's just crazy horsefeathers to me.
  10. I understand that Juan Soto is a baby unicorn and is worth a metric ton moving forward, but there is the fact that Nico Hoerner is 14th in the NL in WAR. Soto is 17th. Obviously this isn't to say that I wouldn't give up Nico + a hefty package of top prospects, but it's worth SOMEthing. I'd do: 1. Nico or Morel + Herz Then choose 2. PCA or Davis + Devers Then 2 of Cassie/Triantos/Made/Hernandez and then any one prospect outside of our named top 20. Basically, I'd just try to incentivize them to take quantity and avoid the guys I most want to keep , the names could be changed depending on how you feel.
  11. Their record is terrible and they aren't a good team but they are better than a number of cubs teams since 2000.
  12. Good deal. It should be time for a number of promotions.
  13. I've heard Boog just let Sutcliffe's terrible takes just hang in the air, which I enjoy, but I must have missed him getting exasperated. Maybe he and JD are fine, though JD and Len seemed like they really got along and there is a stark difference in the rapport.
  14. I love JD. I wish he and Boog got along but there's obviously an issue there.
  15. Great night so far on the farm. Love that Wicks is apparently putting all the pieces together.
  16. So if Groshans, who is slugging .330 this season at AAA, can headline a deal for a 27-yr old All-Star making $10 mil/yr with multiple years of control, we should be able to deal our top 5 prospects and field the '27 Yankees.
  17. They just played an obviously foul ball like it was fair and it fooled the ump?
  18. Yeah I think going hard after Musgrove or Rodon is a must, along with finding a solution at 1st. The stupid expanded playoffs have widened everyone's window. We don't have to strip it bare again and again. That was the optimal strategy for a minute but not anymore.
  19. If they are asking for fair contracts, I'd pay them. I'm all on board for more Kilians and if we can bring back young starters dominating the upper minors then I can understand moving them. I just don't want packages of former prospects, squinting-to-see-potential types and 17 yr olds in the DSL.
  20. I'm going down swinging with this unpopular opinion. We're just hoping these incoming bats are going to match the output of our two all stars? And then we're back to where we are now? We have the DH, Willson doesn't have to catch everyday and when he does no one is getting better offensive production from that position. Happ is 4th in wOBA amongst NL OF. How the hell are we replacing this, much less improving on it? If we want to write off 2023, then I get it, I guess. If we're getting an ace back, I get it. I just feel like we have some very good pieces that need to be supplemented, instead of starting over again. I'm done with the prospect fetishising. We sold off, reloaded the farm, now build something.
  21. So, can anyone explain to me why we wouldn't just keep the LF that is younger than either Gallo or Conforto, is not dealing with any injuries, and is on pace for 4.5 WAR? I get that in Conforto's best season ever he had a slightly higher WAR, but we can't be counting on his best season coming off of shoulder surgery. For suffering the likely drop-off from Happ to either of these guys, we get a package of prospects, and that has to be factored in, but unless it's a top-10 prospect or a knocking-on-the-door, ace-type, then I'd argue it isn't worth it. Acquiring more 'potential 3rd starter' guys isn't worth it. To put it another way, if Happ was on a different team, we'd be lamenting the fact that there was no reasonable scenario in which we could acquire him.
