  1. Soul, I think that's a dead on assesment.
  2. A lot still hinges on RF, and the health and performance of our pitching staff.
  3. I would have preferred Wilkerson, but there was always the chance that Dusty would have miscast him as a 6th hitter.
  4. tim put together a subscription tracker a while back. You can also always PM him, too, to find out.
  5. There is a donation area on the front page of the site. It's on the left, below the forum index area.
  6. I've been making an effort to click on them, but as Willis pointed out, sometimes I don't make it to the bottom of the thread page.
  7. Ah. I've edited the title of the thread. Thanks.
  8. Everything I've heard is that today is the arbitration deadline. Isn't that the same thing?
  9. The big question: Is Macias going to be non tendered? :D
  10. I think that's completely illogical actually. Dusty has been dying for speed. Dusty wants his guys to run, he just never thought he had guys that could. Dusty has been openly pissed at guys like Hairston and Patterson for not running enough. The Cubs have been hard after a "speedy leadoff hitter" at least partially (and I suspect mostly) because they want more stolen bases. McKeon cut back on the running from Torberg, but I highly doubt Baker will cut it back even further. Time will tell. He really didn't have anyone running in San Francisco either, but I don't remember who led off for them. How many SB attempts did Pierre have last season? I thought it was like 80. I would expect probably 20% fewer with Baker.
  11. Because he's too old school to think like that, and the team seems to think Todd Walker isn't as good as he is.
  12. Just because it's the only explanation that you can come up with doesn't mean it's the explanation. What does it matter if it's his fault or not? The point is he's still getting caught. He's still out. He still can't come around and score. Are you trying to irrationally argue, as USSoccer is, that Hendry/Baker have gone to such lengths to acquire this prototypical speedy leadoff man just so that they can tell him to run less often, to get caught stealing less often? It matters because you're lowing HIS on base percentage to make HIM look like lesser of a player. I'm saying that that is faulty because it's not entirely his fault. And yes, I would agree with USSoccer that Pierre will likely run less with Baker as his manager. It's pretty logical to assume that. I hope Dusty doesn't totally ground him, though. Having a speedster like that on base can get inside a pitchers head. I don't know if there's any evidence to that fact, since it's darn near impossible to measure. However, I don't see how it can hurt to have the threat of running in someone's mind.
  13. Fixed for you. .329 Okay, I fell asleep, but now I'm up. How do you know that Pierre will run as much as he did with the Marlins? Again, Baker isn't as aggressive as McKeon was. I'd be willing to bet that his attempts go down and his percentage goes up to about 75-80%. Why the ridiculous emphasis on acquiring a protoypical speedy leadoff hitter if they're so uninfatuated with his running game that they'll ask him to tone it down? They probably think that between his career OBP and his potential to steal bases they've upgraded the position. I just posted it in response to another post, but I'd be willing to bet that his SB attempts decrease, since Baker just is not that aggressive. Does that change his success rate? Maybe, maybe not. But to the Cubs, running 50 times with Pierre is still an upgrade, and Pierre gives them lineup stability. That might begin to explain their efforts.

Are you trying to irrationally argue, as USSoccer is, that Hendry/Baker have gone to such lengths to acquire this prototypical speedy leadoff man just so that they can tell him to run less often, to get caught stealing less often? Hey, now! I'm not being irrational about it, I'm just throwing it out there. I said it earlier, this isn't the best move they could have made, but it's not a disaster either. It's a better move than signing Lofton, who is likely to fall of the face of the production earth, and maybe a bit better, if not equal to gettting Bradley, who might get hurt/arrested/deported. And I don't think it's irrational to think that instead of Pierre running 80 times, he'll likely only run about 50 or 60. Baker just isn't that aggressive. That might help his percentage, it might not make a bit of difference.
  15. Because Rich Hill is untouchable. Which is more accurate: untouchable or overrated? It depends. He's overrated by the Cubs most likely, which makes him untouchable in their minds. But I think he's somewhere in between. He could be a good pitcher, but not good enough where I would hold on to him when I could get an impact bat for him. 'Cuse's theory of Hendry pumping up his value has some merit, although I can't believe Hendry would pump up Hill's value when he did so much to wreck other players value in the past and present.
  16. If Pie develops and is ready by next season, then there's no way on earth you want to keep Pierre as a 4th OF. You'd let him walk and (depending) offer arb for the draft picks. True, although say we back off from power a bit, and have Pierre and Pie in the same of, with Murton in left? Is that too much of a lack of power, or do you think we can pull it off? It's a bit much to think Pie could change to RF and hit with enough power to make it worthwile. Likewise, Pierre would be completely useless anywhere but CF.

  19. We're expecting a baby, so I spend a lot of my time taking care of her. I was up to get her ready for work, and decided to check on the Pierre thing really quick. Needless to say, I didn't go back to sleep. :D You're expecting a baby and you're still not sleeping? It's not going to get any better. Good luck! That's what people keep telling me!! I haven't figured it out yet. We're just trying to make it through the morning sickness phase...
  20. You might be onto something there...Isn't that partly what set him off last year?
  21. Because that would be really stupid. You don't put a guy with a throwing arm that rivals Jonny Damon's in RF. Pierre can't slug, can't throw. His value comes from playing CF. Except for the throwing part, isn't that the Scott Podsednick story that the Cubs are trying so hard to emulate. I don't care much for that story, but if it ends with a WS win next year, I could care less :D
  22. That's going to be the key-if he can adjust to our infield.
  23. But this doesn't change the fact that Pierre is a zero. You give away enough players, you're going to regret one. And nothing is worth Pierre. I disagree. Pierre isn't some terrible, Neifi like player. He may not be our ideal CF, but he's by no means awful.
  24. Diiffusion, Ideally, most of us would love to just get rid of Baker and do things the sane way. But that's not going to happen. We're all stuck in the same boat. Also, you mentioned his OBP after factoring in CS. Who is to say that he'll run as often as he did in Florida? It's not as if Baker is the most aggressive manager out there when it comes to running, hitting and running, etc? I'm sure Pierre will run more than anyone else did last year for us, but there's a good possibility that he doesn't run as much as he did in Florida.
  25. Diffusion- The nats and Phillies aren't really rebuilding, so I'm assuming they'd value these guys less than Florida did.
