  1. Oooo. I like where this is going.
  2. can't believe it took this long for this factor to be pointed out. it's clearly the most important. I thought that was factored in by the fact that you get a draft round multiplier.
  3. But this formula will allow all of us sitting in our mothers basements playing WoW and reading Bill James abstracts to properly appreciate the G.R.I.T.Factor of the commonly overlooked player. Imagine-Paul DePodesta and Bill Plaschke embracing, tears running down their cheeks, whilst DePo sobs "I get it now-LoDuca should have stayed put".
  4. I can't figure out a way to include this. I think this would be a good addition, though.
  5. fixed i say we all start voting shares for how we're going to divide up the sweet cash we'll make when we sell this baby to the highest bidder Agreed. As the thread starter, I feel we should divvy it up by participation in this thread, and in my birthday thread.
  6. IF Hits+Sacrifices+ P/PA+Years in minors before debut+Round in which drafted*BA w/ RiSP/Height in Inches + multipliers (1 (Dirty Helmet Multiplier) + 2 CWS Participant +# of teams played for before ML Debut -1 for wearing batting gloves+5 If played 2 or more sports in college) Updated for multi sport athletes. This is getting very close to perfection. BP better watch out.
  7. I like that. I would think that if you didn't wear batting gloves, your G.R.I.T. would be higher. UPDATED G.R.I.T.F.actor IF Hits+Sacrifices+ P/PA+Years in minors before debut+Round in which drafted*BA w/ RiSP/Height in Inches + multipliers (1 (Dirty Helmet Multiplier) + 2 CWS Participant +# of teams played for before ML Debut -1 for wearing batting gloves) Added mulitplier for batting gloves. Actually, I just subtract 1 for wearing them, since true G.R.I.T. types should never wear them.
  8. Oh, trust. I love the acronym. It shall henceforth be known as G.R.I.T. Factor.
  9. # of foul balls with 2 strikes? I'm looking for that "pest" factor. I wish we could quantify # of starts over a better, younger, player. Difficult to do though. IF Hits+Sacrifices+ P/PA+Years in minors before debut+Round in which drafted*BA w/ RiSP/Height in Inches + multipliers (1 (Dirty Helmet Multiplier) + 2 CWS Participant +# of teams played for before ML Debut) I've included P/PA to account for the pest factor.
  10. Ok. IF Hits+Sacrifices+Years in minors before debut+Round in which drafted*BA w/ RiSP/Height in Inches + multipliers (1 (Dirty Helmet Multiplier) + 2 CWS Participant +# of teams played for before ML Debut)
  11. IF Hits + Sac Bunts + HBP * BA w/ RiSP /Height (inches)=GRIT This is what I have so far. What else can we include? We must quantify the intangible. Should we include a bonus point for not replacing your hat/helmet during the season?
  12. HBP definitely needs to be included. Also, if possible, number of foul balls per plate appearance...because gritty players can apparently fight off pitches. Edited to add: a lower GRIT factor would be bad. In the scenario you painted, a player who is 72 inches tall would have a lower grit factor than a shorter player. Ahhhhhh. You're right. I'll edit the original post.
  13. Close/Late stats don't tell the whole story. This is clutchiness, remember? Clutchiness knows no specific stage of the game.
  14. This is a very apt comparison. The US commentators are garbage. The Fox Soccer Report guys are ok. The guys doing EPL games are just the regular EPL announcers, so I'm not giving FSC credit for tapping into that feed. The Fox Fone In guys suck. haha, wolf, that's an excellent way of putting it. the guy who does play by play for the mls matches, max something, is pretty brutal with his goal calls. i forgot about fox football fone-in, again, i watch it because they talk about soccer. nick webster isn't bad, but steven cohen is a hack. he's a even a chelsea supporter and i can't stand him. the prem announcers from sky sports are usually pretty damn good. I agree with your FFF assessment re: Webster and Cohen. Cohen sucks. Max Bretos is the MLS announcer and I like his goal calls just because they are so ridiculously over the top. The dude himself is ridiculously over the top. yyyyYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSsssssss is what a closed captioned sub title of his calls would look like. YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSS! BENNNNNNY FIELDHABER! BENNY AND HIS JETS! When I got home and watched that game on tape, I couldn't believe that goal call. It was absurd. Does he think the FSC audience is going to pick up onthe Elton John reference?
  15. I've decided that the time is now to come up with a metric to measure the grittiness of a player compared to his peers. This is what I have so far: # of IF hits + # of Sac Bunts * BA w/ RiSP. / height in inches. So, if you had a player with 20 infield hits and 25 sac bunts, you take 45 and multiply it by, say .288, you would get 12.96. Let's assume this player is 5'8. You then divide it by 68 and you get a GRIT factor of .19. So, the taller you are, and the fewer gritty type hits and bunts you made, and the less clutchy you are, the worse your GRIT factor will be. Like, if you're 6'5, with the same numbers, you get a GRIT factor of .16. Which means you can't be as gritty as a shorter player with the same skillset. I'd like to work in other clutchy metrics, because, let's face it, there's a need to evaluate gritty grindy hustleballers sabermetrically. So what else should the formula include? HBP? Walks? Walk off hits? Years spent in minors? I think we can do this. I think we can create an awesome metric here. I'm looking for feedback.
  16. This is a very apt comparison. The US commentators are garbage. The Fox Soccer Report guys are ok. The guys doing EPL games are just the regular EPL announcers, so I'm not giving FSC credit for tapping into that feed. The Fox Fone In guys suck.
  17. FSC is good, but could be much, much better. Way too much non-soccer programming, especially in weekend mornings. When they do air programs it's pretty solid, but very Premier League intensive. It could be a lot better, but it's still a relatively new medium, right? My biggest beef is the lack of knowledgable commentators.
  18. the cubs starting rotation had the 3rd best era in the majors this year and the offense scored the 18th most runs. why would you go after starting pitching instead of offense? I'm assuming you are not serious because I am sure even you watched the NLDS. You don't think it is important to improve the starting pitching? OK, so? #1-If you based offseason roster moves on the sample size of 3 playoffs games, you would be replacing 95% of the roster. And using 3 games as an evaluation tool for anything should get someone fired like faster than anything else should, ever. So I wouldn't use the NLDS as a measuring stick for anything, ever. It was 3 crappy, crappy games. #2-The thread starter was asking why people were so eager to replace Theriot. Other people have echoed this sentiment, saying that he's the kind of player we need more of. This sentiment is stupid.
  19. the cubs starting rotation had the 3rd best era in the majors this year and the offense scored the 18th most runs. why would you go after starting pitching instead of offense? Dude, pitching and defense wins championships. Question: Is it possible to have pitching that's even better than No. 1 overall? Like, what's better than No. 1? Because I think we should strive for it. True champions don't stop at only being the best. I agree. This should be the goal. Like, to be like #0.
  20. the cubs starting rotation had the 3rd best era in the majors this year and the offense scored the 18th most runs. why would you go after starting pitching instead of offense? Dude, pitching and defense wins championships.
  21. Well, that's the point people have made. You have 4 spots that need improvement. If you improve at 3 of them, you can live with it, but you don't ever let Theriot's presence prevent any upgrade at that spot.
  22. So, let me sum this up: -Theriot did nothing to lose his job -Cedeno and Pie's AAA numbers mean nothing -SS winning % is the best way to evaluate who should start. -Theriot is fast -You don't need to be any good offensively if you play SS, C or CF. -Scouts look for defense first. -abuck is an insecure moron -I don't watch baseball -You are a AA broadcaster. Have I missed anything? No? Good. Now, onto the truth: -Theriot is a below average SS by any measurement or evaluation -Cedeno is much younger with more potential -The Cubs had exactly an average offense. They need to get better -The Cubs need to upgrade prduction from C, SS, CF and RF. -Theriot should not prevent an upgrade at SS. -Matt Murton has nothing to do with Ryan Theriot
  23. He's not that fast. I'm glad he has a good CS%. It means he's smart enough to run only when he has a good chance of not getting caught and wasting an out. He hustles. But he's not "fast". He's probably not as "fast" as I used to be. But I appreciate the jab at my lack of baseball watching. And I doubly appreciate the shot at abuck. Way to follow board policy. Getting back to the subject, however, since you're so hell bent on defending a below average player, you tell us how we should evaluate Theriot. Because every way we do it, you object, without offering anything concrete of your own in it's place.
  24. No, we're not just using OPS and SLG to evaluate him. His BA and OBP suck, too. 19th out of 26th in BA. 17th out of 26 in OBP. As a 27 year old.
