  1. The unmitigated gall of a Cub fan to post an article (written by a national writer) in the Rivalries section of a Cubs fans website that doesn't totally kiss the butt of the Cardinal heroes (past and present), local media, organization and "the best fans in baseball." I should be lynched - good thing Enos Country Slaughter is no longer around. I think the problem is the hyperbole and the announcement that Albert Pujols is now the biggest jerk in baseball when in realty he's just got a case of the red a**es. Does Albert Pujols have his own easy chair that nobody else can sit in? No. Does Albert Pujols have his own big screen TV that nobody else on the team can watch? No. Day after day does Albert Pujols have little or minimal interaction with him team members? No.
  2. The Mets might have the most diverse crowd of any baseball team. The Yankees are the team of the typical white male 20-50 years old. Mets get all kinds. They have several "minority heritage" days throughout the year. A lot of last nights crowd was probably of the resale market, which would include a lot of bankers/lawyers etc, which might skew white. But overall, they get a very diverse crowd. They probably don't get as many women as Yankees fans, but that might be because Mets fans are actually Mets fans, while Yankees fans are largely "be seen at the cool place" fans, which includes more women. But there are a good amount of female Mets fans. Some of the most passionate I've ever seen were women. I know what you're saying and have read the same stuff. But watching this series (and especially last night's game) on a 50" HDTV it just seems like most of the people actually at the game were young to middle aged white males. I think your thoughts about resale and ticket price is right. One thing I have noticed: games is domes draw more families and women. Just go to NFL games in Indianapolis, Detroit, Minnesota and St. Louis and you'll see what I mean. Things are different at Bears games; especially when it gets colder. Even within my group of friends who tailgate and go to Bears games, the women fade as the season goes on. (Thank goodness the Bears didn't build a dome attached to McCormick Place as was planned for a while. Football should be played on God's green grass and under His blue sky.)
  3. It's not that bad at Dodger Stadium. Maybe they fixed it. The one time I was out there two years ago it was obnoxious. Also: is it just me or is Shea stadium one big sausagefest? It seemed like every time there was a close up shot of the stands, 80 to 90% of the crowd was white males between 20 and 35. And does anyone of color go to Mets games? As much as I dislike the Cards, at least their crowds looked a lot more diverse.
  4. Is it just the way they have the sound mixed on TV, but is anyone anoyed by how loud the music and sound effects are at Shea? Yankee Stadium and Dodger Stadium are the same way. Does everyone loose 10db of listening ability when living in LA and NY? That goodness Wrigley, The Cell and other stadiums in this area aren't like that.
  5. As a reminder, NSBB etiquette calls for attacking the post, not the poster, although trust me my feelings are not the least bit hurt. I guess in this case it's much easier for you to shoot the messenger than to try to challenge some of the valid points the author made that evidently hit home. If you think they are valid points, I am happy for you to revel in your blindness. Are you disputing the writer's contention that: Quote: For years, decades even, players in every sport have spoken with the media after tough losses. Players can handle it, even the "very best competitors," provided they aren't jerks. Bonds couldn't handle it, but he was a jerk. Steve Carlton and Kevin Brown couldn't handle it, either, but they were jerks. After a period of time, those titles became accepted: Steve Carlton = jerk. If Pujols isn't careful it'll happen to him, and if you're wondering why it hasn't happened yet, look at his address. He plays in St. Louis, a town that for years has looked the other way for its best baseball players. For example, I'm writing this story from the Enos Slaughter Room. Slaughter was behind a near-boycott in 1947 when the Cardinals objected to the color of Jackie Robinson's skin. In some places a player gets maligned for that sort of thing. In St. Louis he gets a room named after him. I don't think he was calling Pujols a racist or saying that he's as bad as Enos Slaughter. The point I got from it is that you can be a jerk in St. Louis and the media will look the other way as long as you're a good player, evidenced by the room named after Slaughter, who was a jerk. He's saying that perhaps the St. Louis media might have looked the other way when Pujols has been a jerk in the past, just as they did with Slaughter. Uhhhh, Enos Slaughter was 60 years ago. And that's your evidence? Yes it was 60 years ago that the Racist Slaughter tried to keep the courageous Jackie Robinson out of baseball simply because the color of his skin was black. However, it was this year that the Cardinal organization choose to honor Enos Slaughter by naming a room after him in the new Busch stadium. They "honored" Slaughter because all of their luxury are named after famous Cardinal players. And they've got something like 82 luxury boxes there so they had to pick him. Heck, I think they've got boxes named after Bob Eucker and Vince Coleman in new Busch. There have been other cities where players of questionable character have been honored by their team. • Reggie White has his name and number retired in Green Bay even though he made incredibly racist statements in public. • The Twins and the Metrodome's main address is Kirby Puckett Way even after all the freaky stuff he did.

  7. I ask you this: Ted Williams, war hero and quite possibly the greatest baseball player ever to swing the bat was a total complete raving a**hole to the media. Some I assume by some people's arguments, his accomplishments are diminished and he's a lesser player. Is that the vibe I'm getting?
  8. MLB thinks the Mets are going to win. There's no Cards version of the 2006 NL Champs hoodie: only the Mets. http://mlb.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pMLB2-3297531reg.jpg http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2521991&clickid=body_rv_txt
  9. That too. ...and run into another team of destiny.
  10. According to the mlb.com website the game has be moved to Tuesday. It's rained all day in St. Louis and it looks like it won't stop until after midnight.
  11. I saw something that said the Mets bullpen threw 112 pitches tonight. Not a good sign for the rest of the series.
  12. Yes it is. (looks towards anyone who made jokes, snide remarks and/or snarky comments about Daryll Kile dying) The only thing stranger I've seen like this is Payne Stewart's death. Now that was a weird one.
  13. I really doubt that's true. Okay, I was exagerating a bit. However the Sportscenter* than ran Sunday night/Monday AM: you want to know what the first 11 1/2 minutes was about? The Yankees. Not the Cards/Padres series ending or the 13 NFL games that were played Sunday. No, it's all about what The Boss is going to do. I've still got it saved on my DVR at home. At 11 minutes 26 seconds they change subjects. I both love and hate ESPN. * Not "Baseball Tonight" the regular SportsCenter that's 90 minutes long this time of year and gets rerun from midnight until noonish.
  14. I'm at work so I can't access cable TV, how is ESPN covering this? I'm sure it will be on 24/7 since it was a Yankee player. If Lidle played for anyone besides the Yankees or the Red Sox this would hardly get mentioned.
  15. The cards need another loosing streak like last week. Cards win and go back to St. Louis up 2-0 in the series.
  16. Supposedly he's had some good games on the road but had some stinkers at Busch.
  17. If ESPN had it their way the entire league would consist of only the Red Sox & Yankees in the AL and Dodgers & Giants in the NL.
  18. i hope he doesn't play on walking around there. I don't think he'll need his hip if he's 10 feet off of Beale.
  19. Supposedly Isringhausen got his hip operated on today in Memphis.
  20. Was listening to todays (9/6 Wed) Cards vs. Nats game on XM. Top of the 9th Cards down 4-5 and Preston Wilson hits a HR with one on to give Cards a 6-5 lead going into bottom on the 9th. Isringhausen comes in for bottom of the 9th, loads up the bases and gives up a walk-off single to give the Nats a 7-6 victory. Made me feel a tiny little bit better. Come on Reds: don't blow this chance to gain ground.
  21. Plus isn't Abreau due something like $13.5 million next year. That's quite a chunk of change.
  22. Very interesting article from the 8/17/06 New York Times about The Boss' decreasing health. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/17/sports/baseball/17boss.html?ex=1313467200&en=df96794e3ae7dab1&ei=5089&partner=rssyahoo&emc=rss He didn't look so good at the groundbreaking for the new Yankees Stadium.
