  1. I'm thinking of an Alanis Morissette song. Which one? Her current cover of The Black Eyed Peas "My Humps"? (Go to youtube and search on that: the video is a riot.)
  2. I guess he couldn't afford it after that whopping $500 fine LaRussa laid on him for showing up late, hungover, and unable to pitch last Thursday after his first accident. Keep in mind that the cops did not think he was drunk when he got into his accident on Thursday morning. Also, there are no reports he was at any strip club. if he was at that neighborhood at 5:30 AM, then the strip club(s) was the safest and most legal place(s) he could have been. Hancock says he usually goes out to drive late at night to get himself tired enough to rest. I know that sounds as implausible to you as it does to me, but that's what he said to the cops. Why drive in that specific area to "get himself tired?" I bet he lived nowhere close to the land of Strip Joints. The cops were probably Cardinal fans and gave him a pass. I live here, and I feel safe in saying that no one, and I mean no one, just "goes for a drive" in that part of town. I'm not saying anything else...just that I wouldn't buy a "i'm out for a drive" story at 5:30 in the morning there...in fact, if I were a cop I'd from then on assume the guy was full of it. I'll second that. I thought I read somewhere that he was at Pop's. Are they open that late? Hell, are the strip joints even open that late? I'm too old for that madness. Pops is open 24/7: it's part of the advertising. (Seriously) I don't know about the strip clubs. they cant sever liquor after 3 though, right? 24/7? thats insane Nope: you can get liquor 24/7 at Pops. The only thing in Sauget are bars and chemical factories. There's like 40 people who live in the town, most are related and have the last name. I think the mayor's last name is Sauget, the owner of Pops, Oz and PTs: her maiden name is Sauget and a couple of the cops have the last name of Sauget. You get the drift. Most of St. Louis' debauchery is done in Illinois.

  4. I'll bet you this will be his last season.
  5. It's not looking good. I took a spin through the Cards forums and found the following. 1) The vehicle he wrecked was a rental. The reason he was in a rental was he damaged his car in the Pops/Oz/Penthouse Club parking lot (the 24 hour clubs across the river in Sauget Illinois) on Thursday morning. I speak from experience: if you're at those places you're up to no good. 2) a customer from Mike Shannons went on camera with face obscured and claimed at have dinner sitting next to Hancock and friends. Hancock was smoking, drinking beers pretty fast and did two whiskey shots. When Hancock left he knocked over a bar stool.
  6. I heard one report say the tow truck was in the left lane, and then I heard another say it was on the shoulder. But then if there aren't any shoulders it can't be true I guess. Anyway, my understanding is if you block a traffic lane on a highway you must put cones or flares out immediately. Maybe that's not the case in Missouri? I can't imagine traveling 70 MPH and realizing too late someone is blocking the lane. Seems way to dangerous to me -- but then again, I don't know the facts about what really happened here. the radio reports (KMOX) i've heard have always said the truck was in the left lane, but i believe the stalled car was also in the left lane. i guess a truck with flashing lights is better than a stalled car with no lights. maybe the driver didnt have time to set up the other safety/warning items. iirc 40 curves a little to the right at that point right before the grand exit going west, so an obstruction in the left lane would be shielded a bit to west bound drivers. This seems to be the only logical explanation - the police just hadn't arrived yet. Very dangerous situation obviously. How does a tow truck arrive before police? Was he just roaming that stretch of land anticipating accidents? thats the part that doesnt make sense. but the truck was behind the stalled vehicle, not where it needs to be to set up a tow. the guy on the radio said it pulled up behind the stalled vehicle to shield it from traffic, which makes me think he was early and just waiting on patrol car or whatever. Isn't the St. Louis police HQ on Clark right by the highway? If you walk from Union Station to Busch Stadium it's about halway during the walk so they wouldn't be far away. I also noticed there are no Dunkin Donuts in St. Louis so their cops might actually be out patrolling. (Plus all the Wendy's are closed: weird city.)

Was he just roaming that stretch of land anticipating accidents? I think the Poplar Street Bridge is patrolled 24/7 by a combination of IDOT, MODOT and private tow trucks. There are signs on some of the ramps saying make every effort to move vehicle from traffic lanes and if you can't to remain with the vehicle.
  8. From their main columnist Bernie M I'm assuming Joe Walsh is the Cardinals security guy or something like that.
  9. I drove it just before I left St. Louis to come back to Chicago. Highway 40/I-64 is a double decker raised highway from the Mississippi River to just right before this stretch. As you drive west from the river you pass the following: -The old Ralston building converted to high end apartments -Busch stadium -all the old warehouses being converted to loft condos -plain parking garage -some government offices -Sheraton hotel -right as you pass the Scotrade center the highway starts going back to street level/side-by-side setup - As you come down the hill you come to the Compton overpass. It's true: there are no shoulders in this area.
  10. If ESPN had their way, MLB would consist of Sox/Yankees in the AL and Dodgers/Giants in the NL. All other teams would be eliminated.
  11. what? why wasn't the coroner's office / the police the party to do this? How does the coroner's office know how to get a hold of Hancock's parents? If he was married I would assume they would send a cop to the house. But if he's single I assume contacting his employer would be the quicker route rather than having to break out the phonebooks and calling people in his hometown with the same last name.
  12. I assume they'll do a day-night double header in the September series.
  13. Where you sitting? I'm in section 367. I bought these tickets from a charity group, so I'm sure I'll be surrounded by Cards fans. The First Pitch tickets are the ones where you pay $11 for a voucher for two tickets at 9am the day of a game. Then at the start of the game at a certain gate they hand you a sealed envelope with two random tickets. They could be SRO, they could be great box seats. But usually they're the tickets the visiting team gives back in sections 257 and 259 so there might be some Cubs fans around me. I'm sitting in 345 on Saturday and 593 on Sunday.
  14. So who's coming down or already in St. Louis? I just checked into the Hilton Ballpark. I left Springfield early this morning and got down early enough to catch two of the First Pitch tickets. I think I'm going to take a nap and meet a buddy for lunch at some place called Lesters. Apparently its some new sports bar down here with a $21 overstuffed corned beef sandwich. I think I'll wear my fat pants.
  15. So this will be covered 24/7 on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNews? Great.
  16. From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Even if the article is blatantly pro-Cards, any time Scott Boras gets egg on his face I feel better.
  17. i made a rant about three nights in august after i read it. i really really hated the book. ...and supposedly it's getting made into a movie. Kevin Pollack bought the rights.
  18. Worse news: the Cardinals just won and are in first place in the division after sweeping the Pirates.
  19. And for those that don't live near an L stop? Screw them right, I mean they can't possibly be Cubs fans right? Where did I mention a prairie? Soldier Field is close to the L, close the two highways, close to a major road for buses and cabs (LakeShore Drive). Have you ever tried to drive to or from a Bears game? It's a nightmare. Also Soldier field is not close to any L stops. It's a hike from the nearest one. Yes and it's close to the Roosevelt stop on the redline. Take a cab or walk from there. I have driven to Bears games, as well as taken the L and buses. I'll admit, none are perfect but at least they are options. With Wrigley, the only viable options are taking the L or driving and parking at a remote lot (which are free and have a free shuttle by the way which is fantastic). They tried to build a remote lot closer to the park and the neighborhood said "No". Buses and cabs are horrible after games. Has anyone here been to a game at BankOne? Or Safeco? Or Turner? All have very good access to public transportation. Not to mention all of the fan/family friendly aspects that I mentioned about the Cell, shorter lines, better statistics, better food, better walkways, better sight lines..... What are you talking about? Since when did Phoenix get light rail/subway? Seattle only has one stupid short monorail line that goes nowhere near Safeco. Atlanta: their train line goes nowhere near Turner.
  20. I wonder if the sentiment to replace Wrigley will increase after the new Yankee Stadium opens in 2009?
  21. What I'm worried about is a period where Zell owns the Cubs and firesales everyone off in a salary dumping move so were stuck with a Cubs team made up of AAA players. Kinda like what happened in Florida with the Marlins after they won the World Series. Or in hockey were the St. Louis Blues dumped Chris Pronger for a case of pucks and stick tape.
  22. I think the last three years the season opener has been on ESPN2 since it's the same night as the Women's NCAA Basketball semifinal. As much as I dislike the Cardinals, that coverage by ESPN was bad. Their east coast bias and love affair with the RedSox/Mets/Yankees showed right through. I kept waiting for Joe Morgan to make love to the Mets.
  23. Went to one of those fancy clubs in South Miami Beach last year. The bottle Bud Light I nursed for a hour was $8. $9 for a rail mixed drink, $11 for a call, $13 for a premium and my girlfriend's Long Island Ice Tea (made with rail) was $16.
  24. Al least this will be a 30 second break on ESPN from their constant coverage of the Red Sox/Yankees/Mets axis of evil. BTW: I served LaRussa a couple of times back in my waiting/bartending days. He always nurses a bottle of red wine when dining/drinking: usually leaving 1/3 or 1/4 of the bottle. At least he doesn't rip through the Johnny Walker Blue like some managers I know.
