  1. Moneyballer! I'm sure his down year last year has something to do with it. I don't think he's a bad choice if he's still available in the 4th round. Then again, I don't know who you already have and who else is available.
  2. Depends on which PSU team shows up. The one that traveled to OSU or the one that played Iowa and MSU. I can smell it, just faintly.
  3. Joe Morgan for 3 weeks in March? What did we all do to deserve this?
  4. Just found this site. Good stuff.
  5. Now there's an accurate basis for an opninion on Alford, but one that I will also disagree with in a way. Alford was not exactly overmatched when he was hired -- in fact his first recruiting class was top 5 at the time. The problem came where some rumblings came out that certain people were unhappy/treated differently/lied to, and long story short, it's really gone downhill from there. I can think of 2 players off the top of my head, and because of the dissent of a couple, now he is overmatched. Haluska grew up a Hawkeye fan, and we couldn't land him. Horner and Brunner didn't need to be recruited, they had committed when they were 6 or something. Nobody saw Hansen ever getting significant playing time. Henderson didn't have too many people knocking on his door, as I recall. Yada, yada. Tom Davis wasn't exactly the best at recruiting in-state either. Heinrich, Collison, and LaFrentz being 3 of the more recent big examples. Back to your point. They were right in not extending Tom Davis. He wasn't going to lead them anywhere, and it was time for him to move on. At the time of Davis's departure, there was a strong link between the program and Rick Majerus (he looked for real estate in the area) as well as some other candidates, but Alford was the big name at the time because of his Big Ten ties. Funny thing is, everyone bemoaned the hiring of Ferentz (vs alum Bobby Stoops) and celebrated the hiring of Alford. Funny how much difference a few short years will make.
  6. the MVC is very very good this year...they should get 4 teams in the big dance this year in UNI, SIU, Creighton, and Wichita St. I would not have been that embarassed to lose to UNI, they are going to win at least one game in the tourny this year...mark it down. I'm not really that bummed about it, since they do have a pretty darn good team. Plus, it was on their home court, went to OT, and Horner was injured. The frustrating part is that we just can't seem to beat them in Cedar Falls.
  7. Northern Iowa is now in the top 25 (24 coaches, 25 AP) for the first time in school history. Makes Iowa's loss to them just a little less embarassing, I guess. Next game: at Creighton tonight.
  8. Please provide an example when voting. I can't decide: KJ: “He had never seen a corn dog, much less tasted one. It took him three quarters to eat one, and then he ate three.” DR: "We used to say if a frog had side pockets, he'd carry a handgun."
  9. There's a lot of Dusty bashing that he brings upon himself, but I actually get the feeling that he's with us on Walker. Hendry may not like him, but I think if he's around when the season starts, Dusty will have him batting 2nd and playing 2nd. And that may be the only thing Dusty gets right.
  10. Hitting a 2-run shot when down 1 in the bottom of the 9th is one thing. Hitting a solo shot when up 7 in the 4th is another.
  11. Big if, and one that has me depressed when I look at the list. If Hendry had a knack for landing the big-name FAs every year, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it. However...
  12. You're right that you see it more now because of ESPN, but that is the reason it occurs more now. Showboating back in the day meant getting "one in the ear" on your next trip to the plate. The showboating did not occur nearly as regularly as early as 10-15 years ago. I don't care if it's Barry Bonds or Todd Hundley or Babe Ruth or Bip Roberts -- if you hit a home run, drop your head and the bat and trot around the bases. Babe Ruth calling his shot, which is still an item of debate and one that I doubt actually happened, is much different that Barry Bonds taking off his armor and walking halfway to first after launching another toward McCovey Cove.
  13. If that hits showrooms, my wife will get awfully sick of me begging her to get one.
  14. My guess is Kelton is missing because he's not in our system any more.
  15. I haven't been paying attention as closely as I would like. Is it this one? http://popularhotrodding.com/features/0312phr_fifthgen_04_z.jpg
  16. C'mon, they couldn't contain Erik Hansen! http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/iowa/sports/m-baskbl/auto_action/86073.jpeg
  17. I've said that I don't like fantasy baseball, I suck at it and I don't really like playing it. I don't necessarily dislike fantasy baseball, but I think the fantasy should have stopped after football. The others just aren't as fun. What saved baseball? Time. The HR chace in 98 just helped speed things along. Had that not happened, we would have waited another year or two for those same fans to come back.
  18. The random "look out" always made me laugh. The funniest part for me was that I rarely ever listened to him on the radio -- he did it for the TV audience as well. There wouldn't be any action on the field whatsoever, and he would blurt that out.
  19. That is a completely uninformed opinion. As someone with direct involvement with U of I athletics in recent years, and heavy involvement during both incidents with Pierce, I can tell you for a fact that Steve Alford is not the reason Pierce was given a second chance. I honestly am amazed he was able to keep his composure to 1) not scream "I told you so" to certain unnamed parties when the 2nd occurred and 2) to not beat the living crap out of Pierce either time. When the 2nd report came out, prior to Pierce being named as a suspect, Alford immediately kicked him off the team. That, as far as most of us know, was 100% his decision. Back to the 1st incident. There was a belief amongst all involved that the incident was not as serious as it was first made to sound. That includes those associated with the women's basketball team (the victim was a player) as well as local prosecutors. It was not solely an Alford decision (if it was up to him, Pierre would likely have been gone), and it was also not entirely Bowlsby either. I never actually spoke to the victim about the incident, but the general impression given from her to others around was that she was OK with how his punishment transpired. Now, if you want to form an opinion of Steve Alford based on Pierre Pierce's incidents, your opinion should be that he is a man of integrity and class. If you want to form your opinion of Steve Alford based on his playing history or coaching resume, then feel free to discuss. However, if you want to spew out inaccuracies and use those as your basis for your opinon, please do not mention it again.
  20. You can't run on Paul Bako.
  21. I think it's more that a healthy Williamson > Wuertz. I don't think anyone's really "down" on Wuertz. We have a surplus in the pen right now, and Wuertz is right on the fringe. It's a good thing.
  22. They did like Maddux: Maddux 32 SB / 8 CS - 225 IP Zambrano 1 SB / 9 CS - 223.1 IP I believe Barrett caught both of them most times, but I can't find the numbers. Rest of the top 5 in IP: 3. Prior 5 SB / 6 CS - 166.2 IP 4. Rusch 3 SB / 2 CS - 145.1 IP 5. Williams 7 SB / 2 CS - 106 IP
  23. I'd be more interested to see the numbers by pitcher. Teams seem to run like crazy with Maddux on the mound. Understandably, since I think I could steal a bag off him.
  24. That one actually came many, many years ago. I believe the number has more than tripled since.
  25. 355/403/518/921 Wait, that's what he did at Iowa last year. Not happening, but how nice would it be to see those numbers in the show over the course of 150+ games in '06? http://www.jamous.com.br/weblog/homer%20drool.JPG
