  1. That's absurd. I'd much rather know I was a shot here or a break there from winning than not be in the game. In the course of a season you will have plenty of 10 pt losses. Even the best teams will. I hate the near heart attack/anger I end games with when you lose by one in overtime. Would you rather the Cubs lose by 1 in the 12th inning on a walk off or lose by 3 in nine? We got painfully close in '03 to the world series. I would take that anyday over what happened in 06. Which scenario did you prefer? No matter what, I would rather be in the game. A ten point loss in the NBA might not even be a close game. You can't compare a season of success to a single game in a league that plays 82/162 games. If you're talking about division titles and playoff success then of course I would rather come close than lose big. However a single game when there are so many doesn't mean a whole lot. Eh, I can kinda see your point. When I am playing in the game I want it close, if I am watching I hate to lose close so I kinda get it I guess.

  4. 19 years old, a couple of million, in Europe for 1 year. How do you become miserable? You're away from everyone you know, have a grueling schedule you're not used to, and get [expletive] upon by teammates and coaches who think you need to be put in your place. Plus your paycheck doesn't always come on time, if at all. Also don't even try to complain about it because your American and they don't care. I have a few friends play over seas and a lot of them weren't very happy at all while over there making good money. Also anyone else see the Louisville recruit got 2 points and 1 board the other night?
  5. Especially since Utah is pretty terrible. They don't rebound at all. Watching that game lastnight, I couldn't help but think how Boozer messed up by not going free agent last year. All these teams will now get to see how washed up he is. Probably cost himself a ton of money.
  6. That really put him in a bad spot. He really cannot answer that question without making someone within the organization angry.
  7. Amazing. http://www.straitpinkie.com/hilariousness/you-cant-make-this-stuff-up-jj-redick-releasing-rap-album/
  8. I really enjoyed that article. Sam seems like a pretty cool guy. Plus while obviously intelligent he also realizes that there is a fine line of using stats as opposed to putting much of an emphasis on them. Thanks for sharing Raisin.
  9. I don't think you can be the next person to touch it though. Kind of like the NFL. I might be wrong though. He needed to have re-established himself in bounds. At that point he can touch it. I think they thought he was still in the process of getting in bounds when he came into contact with the ball.
  10. I would throw the rating away when looing at a prospect as it seems the gurus hit on the top 10 to 25 guys pretty often, but after that it is a crap shoot. There are plenty of examples of players who were rated lower that still have went on to become great college and pros. Deron Williams and Brandon Roy both come to mind. While Drew had a bad frosh year, I don't think it is crazy to think that he can still become a productive player. Especially when you take into consideration that he will be surrounded by a lot of talent the entire time he is at UNC. It might be foolish to expect Lawson or Felton level performance, but you still should be able to compete for a national title with him running the show. an example I would think of for Drew would be Steve Blake, although not blessed with an enormous level of raw talent, he nonetheless has both won an NCAA title, but also carved out a nice career in the NBA.
  11. Maybe next season after they sign Wade but, seriously, some defense would help. Garnett - they've got no answer for him. But, it astunds me as to why they cannot defend Ray Allen, he's only looking for the three hanging around the perimeter and Pierce? The guy does samething with ball everytime, left, left, left, why haven't they figured that out? Really, though bothguys are in the top 50 scorers of all time. So no one is figuring them out. I don't deny the were once great players but, now? I saw nothing special from Allen Friday, Pierce probably still has more in the tank than Allen. Gotcha. Yeah I still think Pierce has some left. Allen is still good because he has teammates that demand the concentration of the defense most of the time.
  12. But, both of those things could be directly impacted by performance enhancing drugs. I.E. he hit for power because of the steroids, thus he was pitched around a lot. It might not be the case, but you should be able to see why people would think that. What a ridiculous argument about the walks. He was such a dangerous hitter that pitchers felt they had to pitch around him (which is a point that I contest anyway- it is NOT always a decision by the pitcher that leads to a walk, there is such a skill as plate discipline and working a count), but that means that he isn't necessarily all that good because the only reason he got on all those times was because he was pitched around. backwards logic anyone? by that reasoning someone could hit a homerun literally every time they came to the plate, causing pitchers to eventually walk him literally every time he came to the plate. that person, by your reasoning, wouldn't be a great hitter at all because the only reason he was getting on all those times was because pitchers were afraid to pitch to him. So you don't think that there was a correlation between his power and the amount of times that he walked?

Do you believe he was on roids when he hit 49 in 1987? http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc33/WaxHeaven/2-101.jpg Not sure, it is possible. Canseco says he was using in the minors. Don't really care much anyways. I think a pretty huge chucnk of players were.

  16. The talk radio here is pretty hard on him and Hochevar. Wishing instead they were Longoria and Tulowitzki instead. Moore did send Gordon down this year, but I doubt they would give him away.
  17. So you want to trade one mental case for another? Well, in a different world I wouldn't trade Bradley, but that ship has sailed. But if it brings us Alex Gordon I'd take however many crazies was necessary. I'd love to pick up Gordon but where would you play him? RF? Could Alex play second at all?
  18. It got them Derrek Lee earlier this decade, a productive CF for the past 2 seasons and has produced 2 of the Cubs top 10 or 15 prospects thus far. It got them one year of a productive CF. Fukudome was an unproductive RF the year before, unless there is some Asian tie-in with Johnson/Edmonds that I missed. Although the general point still stands. The Cubs ventured into Asia and then seemingly went away, so the break between Choi and the current crop came up empty, but being there now is a good thing, and investing heavier is even better. Why would you ever cut off more than a billion people when searching for talent? As Raisin pointed out, we've done pretty well in that market. I know you weren't suggesting to cut it off, but I was afraid maybe the next owner would so this is a good thing to hear.
  19. I don't recall a big "Big Ten is better than Big East" argument last year. More along the lines of "Big East isn't as good as people think and Big ten isn't as bad. " I mentioned the tourney because everyone based the Big East = best conference ever stuff based on their top end teams, and they wound up striking out with them. They had four teams in the Elite Eight and two in the Final Four. No one made the final, but Pitt might have if Nova hadn't upset them - I think the Panthers would've had a good shot at UNC. MSU/UConn was a close game. I wouldn't call that 'striking out'. It wasn't setting the world on fire, but half the Elite Eight and half the Final Four is a pretty solid tournament performance. But, after the hype job the Big East got last year I expected that. Hell the Big ten got two teams in the Final Four in '05, in case you forgot that was another one of the down years for our conference according to the experts. Too many "experts" have agendas.
  20. If anyone should know it would be a Duke fan. After all, weren't you pretty highly ranked with Greg Paulus as your point guard? Every year he was there? I never liked Greg Paulus, you can look at my posts here. I wanted Sean Dockery to play over him his freshman year and Nolan Smith to start over him his last two years. Also, I don't think we were up at 4 for a couple of those years. EDIT: All of these are preseason rankings #1 his freshman year. Although, that was certainly because of Redick and Williams #11 his sophomore and junior years #5 last year UNC at 11 would be OK with me. But, you were ranked higher than that, so why wouldn't the Tar Heels in a weaker field, with better talent around the pg?

  22. It sounds like his main beef is that teams who return everyone(Purdue) aren't ranked higher. Kentucky's gonna be very good.
  23. John Wall is very, very good (if he is allowed to play). It's not just a matter of who returns but who else you add. I agree and that is why they should go from unranked and barely a .500 team to ranked in the 15-20 range. To me the top 5 is reserved for the teams who played close or at that level the year before and return a lot. The top 5 is not for a team that has been mediocre for years now and get a great recruit who no one really knows how good he will be because he has yet to play. They are top 5 simply because they have been talked about all off-season. They should be ranked where ESPN feels they stack up, not based on past history. Wall isn't the only great freshman they have, he's just the best one they have. They are definitely a top 10 team. Wall's good, but the hype is a little outrageous. He can't shoot. And that will really impair his ability to use his quicks. People talk like he's the best guard we'll have seen in a long time. He's not. Dude isn't as good as Rose or Gordon. His high school team went 17-13 in the small class last year. I am gonna need to see a bit more, I doubt he can sniff Rose.
  24. Some people alway vote for the last years champion until the season starts. Well only one guy did that, it still doesn't quite explain why they're ranked 4th. They are still going to be very good. They return Ed Davis and The other big, who's name is eluding me, and have a really good recruiting class. Plus everyone is saying that college bball is down this year. edit: Dion Thompson. Don't forget Tyler Zeller. Yeah, they are still going to be very, very good. Guard play has some questions, but I still think they will be a legit final four contender.
