  1. No, everyone's jumped on that bandwagon I bet it's because he's terrible at most things basketball related. He's still raw, but people are acting like he's got a Royce White ceiling or something. I'd buy that, but he doesn't have great athleticism. I bet MJ is frothing at the mouth to pick him.

  3. Jesus, Illinois looks like a joke for all of this. Congrats to the BOT.
  4. why would anyone from anywhere? the advantage illinois has is that it has access to illinois recruits that schools that aren't the blue-bloods don't. the question that you really want to ask is why would a top illinois recruit go out of state to a school that isn't a blue-blood? furthermore, illinois was (is?) in on jabari parker because the coaches have been in on him since the beginning. the advantage here is that the coaches can build relationships with potential recruits at a younger age. that's an advantage that not even duke has. hearing parker talk, the kid has some loyalty to the state, as well. why do you need to be the coach at the in-state school to be able to build relationships with those kids at an early age? Couldn't any coach do that just as easily? You could, but most coaches don't know about kids as frosh and sophomores unless they are familiar with a program or area.
  5. I'm assuming Thomas did not use a search firm, correct? That's the one big advantage they give you. They can contact everyone you're interested in, find out the numbers needed discreetly and avoid the public negativity. He did use one. Even the search firm hates him so they leaked all the numbers. The Smart leak was strategic.
  6. Hire Groce, retain Jerrance, use money saved from Groce hire Smith, get Parker, win championship.

  8. There's a difference from where Illinois is right now as a program, and where they could/should be. Illinois is in a unique position geographically where if all they did was pull in the best recruits from within the state, they'd have a top 5 recruiting class every year. And there's no real in-state competition for that. Right now, though, there's no pressure for high school recruits to go to a state school, because the school's reputation has hit a slide in the last couple years. However, that doesn't mean the base isn't there for it to be a top 10 program nationally, and, really, they should be aiming for it. They offered Smart/Stevens enough to put it in that league, and they turned it down because they were content where they were. That's nobody's fault, and there's nothing Illinois should have done differently (aside from perhaps not making the numbers public). Making the numbers public on Smart was the right thing to do. Now the BOT can't say we didn't go hard after a minority candidate.
  9. So no answer then? Look at postertobenamedlaters post.
  10. He's not good at trolling.
  11. those guys are all at 50 or pushing 50. groce is 40, which gives him a huge advantage. And Alford is a raging dbag.
  12. I don't think Monson will do the big ten again. He talked about it pretty openly in Sports Illustrated.
  13. Agreed, I was there at the beginning of the Frank Williams recruitment. At the Lou Henson basketball camp each team got one game guaranteed on the Illinois floor. I was on Frankies team, we never left the main floor lol.
  14. we're a better job than wisconsin or michigan. the team isn't exactly in a better place than either of those programs. but the potential for success is much greater. however true the idea that coaches are scared away by chicago hoops, if you forge an alliance with the cpl coaches, the sky is the limit. also, kruger didn't recruit chicago at all and was successful at illinois. the illinois job is the equal of osu and msu, it's a 3-team battle for second, which the other two teams are winning right now and over the last 6-7 years. that can change very quickly and likely would have changed immediately if we were getting one of our top choices. wisconsin doesn't recruit well-enough and thusly limits themselves, their ceiling is low and floor is high. michigan has detroit and ohio to recruit but must share that ground with 2 superior programs. they are also a football school and basketball will always be second. Kruger really got lucky though with the Manuel three being in his era. We need Peoria to start producing high end talent again.
  15. I don't care what that lying, pos says. I think the thing hurting us was Izzo's response to Weber getting fired. Izzo has a lot of clout within the coaching fraternity.
  16. And the quality of the coaching in the Big 12 declines even more. Self, Huggins, the Mayor and Kruger are all above average or better. Barnes and Drew are awful, but they get great players. Ford is bad. I have no idea who or what coaches TCU. Gillespie is overrated, imo. can't believe anyone would mention hoiberg with those other names...he's come a long way since his hiring was mocked by some people. I think most mocking was just that he had never coached before. Ballsy hire that paid off, so far.
  17. I don't think this went all that badly, if we get Groce. He kept dropping awful names in respect to Groce. Gill and Lickliter. Both of those guys never showed the ability to recruit. Groce has. I like the hire, if we do in fact hire him. Turner Gill was supposedly a good recruiter while at Nebraska. He had moderate success in the MAC. Ok say they are even, I don't think they are, but going to KU for football is a lot harder than going to Illinois for basketball. Kansas has no recruiting base at all in football Illinois has a pretty solid one established. I think there is a lot better chance for success here.
  18. We went after the two big names, they said no. Not sure what else we could really do. I'd rather have a younger guy with experience than go the Reggie Theus or Chris Collins route. I've read a lot of good things about Groce. On one of the Ohio State boards they were talking about him eventually being the guy they'd like to replace Thad. (Not sure where they think he's going?) It's not a homerun hire, but I sitll think it's a pretty solid gamble.
  19. It's a crap shoot, but it's one Illinois has to take if they can't lure any big names in. And the difference between Groce and Semi-Famous Mid-Major Coach is probably not that large. Nope, they are all Lickliters, except Fran. Bout right haweyecub? Are you trying to say I think all mid-major coaches are like Lickliter? I have no idea where you would possibly be getting that from. Sorry you said Turner Gill. manbearcub called him Todd Lickliter. My bad.

Nope, they are all Lickliters, except Fran. Bout right haweyecub? I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. You are hating on Groce a ton. There's a pretty good chance he's gonna be successful. He has a good roster returning and he's a very good recruiter. if he keeps Jerrance on staff I think he will do very well.
  23. I don't know why anyone thought Stevens was coming. He wasn't going to, he won't leave Butler unless its for IU. Smart hurt, the other guys who said no I am not sweating. What pisses me off the most is that we're going to hire a guy based off two tournament wins. That's not to say he won't be a good coach, but I'd like to see more consideration of names like Marshall and Mack. I read his name as a coach that was on the fast track before the tourny even started.
